Patrick says that what a time to be alive was actually written before the pandemic, but they added that quarantine line later Edit: yes do the piano review! Loved watching your reaction to Heaven, Iowa. It’s probs my favorite on the album. I think it sounds like a Phil Collins song
Yeah, "In The Air Tonight". Even have that drum run up accented by the chorus, making it a fitting homage, without sounding like they were ripping it off. One of my biggest complaints from their last 3 albums was the emphasis on sampling other people's songs rather than making their own stuff. This is a nice balance of triggering nostalgia while still maintaining some originality. Oh, and the base line from "Hold Me Like A Grudge" is an homage to Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust", and the chorus guitar part is an homage to Led Zeppelin/Franz Ferdinand. The intro to "So Good Right Now" is an homage to "Little Bitty Pretty One". And "What A Time To Be Alive" seems to be inspired by Earth, Wind, and Fire's "September". At first I didn't like any of these "homages" other than the Phil Collin's one, but I am starting to like them now considering they could have gone the lazier route of just playing a sampled recording of those songs.
@@_ajs94 Ah, that was it!. I knew it sounded familiar, but couldn't place it. Oh, and there's the line "Let's twist the knife again like we did last summer", which is a play on Chubby Checker's "Let's Twist Again".
Awesome reaction, I love the analysis of Patrick's voice , his harmonies and how this adds to the overall track. I was just like you listening the first time, it was like Xmas and my birthday all wrapped into one. I love the drums on this, Andy has done such a killer job. Pete's bass is so good on this, he is so underrated as a player. Joe really shines and so does Patrick. Keep reacting , you are doing such a good job :)
My first impression was that this was another dud, but the more I listen to it, the more I feel like this is the return to form I've been waiting for. I still don't think this is as good as IOH or FAD, but this is soo much better than anything else they have made in the last 10 years. I think it's because I am an old school FOB fan and didn't care for the new stuff as much, and it is the new stuff that has started to grow on me. Still, there are some parts that just make me cringe when listening to them. I don't know why, but every time he sings "apocalypse" (in both songs) it seems like they're trying too hard to be edgy. Also, the word just has too many syllables and he over-emphasizes all of them. Last point on this, "livestream the apocalypse" is super cheese... like not even garbage American cheese, but that fake sprayed from a can crap that pretends to be cheese. Other parts that hold the album back for me are the direct references to COVID, like "two-thousand nineteen" and "quarantine blues". Look Pete, we get it COVID lockdowns sucked for all of us, but it's your political allies that were behind all that crap. Maybe learn something from it instead of just complaining about it while supporting the same Leftist BS that caused all that unscientific nonsense. Oh, and while I like that Ethan Hawk speech, "Pink Seashell", from Reality Bites, that should be a bonus at the end of another song, not its own track... same for "Baby Annihilation". In Folie A Deux, the spoken word part was the end of "20 Dollar Nose Bleed" that flowed right into "West Coast Smoker" brilliantly. Both of those tracks seem like out of place filler on this album. Just feels like we were robbed of 2 more songs that could have put this album closer to FAD's excellence. So, this was at first a 5/10 for me. Now, it's probably about a 7/10 for me. "Heaven, Iowa" is easily my favorite song off this new album, and probably my favorite song they've ever made. Likely because I am a vocalist and this one is soo good to sing along to. When I sing it I add a little more rasp in chorus 3 and hold two of those "forever"s out for another measure while jumping up an octave. Soo satisfying to do with that guitar wailing and those Collins-esque drums pounding. Last note from me. This is the first time since Folie that Fall Out Boy's songs have inspired lyrical ideas for me. Last night I filled up like a page and a half of new lyric ideas. It's like Pete and Partrick opened up a pressure valve in my brain, so yeah... looks like the Boys are back in the zone on this one. Maybe only with one foot this time, but that more than most bands/artists/musicians ever seem to manage.
Great album. sounds like a nice mix of old and new. 9 out of 10 and that's coming from an old school FOB fan.
I agree I'm glad they went back to the producer that produced foli a duex
