It's a long song...but wow does it showcase talented musicians! Yes...Kai.has many drum cam videos and clinics and warmup videos up! Just search Wintersun Sons of Winter and Stars drums...I'm sure it will come up...and as a total drum nerd, I think that would be a great reaction! Watching Kai.play close up is a real treat!
About Children of Bodom. Alexi Laiho was the composer, guitarist and vocalist. He died in december 2020. I'm from Finland and knew Alexi. But their music was not for me. Wintersun is my preference with Nightwish.
I discovered and became a fan of Wintersun via the Nightwish Army. Also Devin Townsend, who you should check out if you don't know him. Maybe "Deadhead" Live at the Royal Albert Hall.
When it comes to the screams, both Children of Bodom and Wintersun have old Finnish black metal scene in their, if not roots, at least influences. So similarities are not surprising. Jari Mäenpää who composes, plays and mixes the records himself except Kai doing the drums was not born yesterday, he's been all around the Finnish more extreme metal scene.
And Kai.. as I understand, unlike most other bands he plays in, here he got to compose the drums himself. Jari is a multi-talent, but not on drums, and he knew Kai could create something awesome if given the chance. And he did. The end result is glorious, but I think also something on this planet only Kai can play it exactly as seen here.
Lead singer , Jari Maenpaa, formed the band as a side project in 2003. He was fired from his other band , Ensiferum, in 2004 when their toring schedule and Wintersun's recording schedule conflicted. Teemu Mantysaari is on guitar. Jari is still currently working on the next album, it's been in the works for quite some time. Can't remember if he lost part of a lung, or just has reduced lung capacity. Either way , it was due to contracting Tuberculosis during his military service. 2 more songs from this same Sonic Pump studio session to try, 'Time' and 'Land of Snow and Sorrow'.
yeah, he got tuberculosis during his mandatory military service and lost some lung capacity or went trough surgery that took 1/3 off from his other lung. don't know how true it is, but damn he is doing good work.
i have heard this a hundred times and never get tired of it - definitely you should try Time from the studio rehearsal which is one of the best songs ive ever heard
About the vocal sound. Check out also Norther and Ensiferum with Petri Lindroos. He has this same kind of vocal sound as Alexi and Jari. Jari was first in Ensiferum. Petri Lindroos was in Norther and then Petri went to sing in Ensiferum after Jari. By the way, Jukka Koskinen was in Norther too, before going to Wintersun. But the vocal sound and the sound of these certain type of bands from Finland. I think it could be said, that there has been or is a certain style typical in Finland, that has developed from northern melodic death metal etc to style that is distinct and clearly different for example from Gothenburg metal scene and other nordic styles. I don`t know if that Finnish style has name, I think it should have. Could you react to Wintersun`s Beautiful Death too? That song for example has more clearly that certain style common with Norther and COB.
Most folk will recommend Time next and it is awesome. They have 2 other contrasting albums where you simply can’t go wrong. The self titled first album is heavy as hell and totally full of classics and the more refined(ish!) the Forest Seasons with only 4 songs, but they are all magnificent. Take your pick….. 🙂

He has a clue definitely. Wintersun has the same "root" as COB for example.
