Jake instantly reacted after Ohtani spoke to the media Monday: ruclips.net/video/mHZ6rJybReM/видео.html
With the Draft Kings mics lol
Not ironic at all. If you can’t see a difference between a podcaster and a person playing in the games you’re not bright
Didn’t Ippei say that his sports gambling addiction started with Draft Kings?
@@dylanfoote3029people are so dumb lol “oh look! Its da same thing as the thing they’re talking bout errrrrrrrr”
Absolutely 😂
How dumb are you
I’m 100% sure Ohtani is innocent. I’d be you anything, say $4.5 mil and an interpreter to be named later.
How the hell can you lie about working for the Yankees and Red Sox as a translator and the Angels don't even verify that? That part of the story is blowing my mind.
Edit: I'm not saying they shouldn't have hired him or anything like that but how do you have that in his bio on the team website 😂😂
Ippei came over from Japan w/ Shohei. So I think it was one of those situations where the start says, "This is my guy" and then the team said, "OK."
I mean, I've seen worse. Doctors getting caught lying about having Masters degree or chefs lying about working for the White House. All suuuuper easy to check. But, people project confidence, and it covers up a lot.
It’s the Angels. They’re barely above a AAA team.
On the other hand, if an Asian guy is gonna lie about going to a college, picking a UC school was a good choice. Very much a "story checks out" thing.
You can lie on your resume in real life too, they won’t check.
You keep mentioning about Ohtani making excuse of not knowing English. Thats a narrow way of viewing. Ohtani for sure knows english. Its about information control. Interpretor/Secretary can control what info gets to the boss. Thats where lots of potential lies happening is possible.
You guys keep presenting just two options, that it was Ippei stealing or Shohei gambling. I think option3 is the most likely, Ippei gambled, but Shohei covered for him, not knowing that in and of itself was illegal. And that's why the lawyers are stepping in. That's not as clickbaity of a theory though.
That’s what I’m thinking as well. And the “theft” part is more so that Shohei didn’t know it was for gambling so he feels like the money was stolen from him.
Don't you think Manfred's people might have mentioned to his (Ohtani 's) attorneys that sending money to an illegal book is also against the rules. That makes more sense than anything. The attorneys had to scramble to cover for Ohtani......
Exactly.
@@markyr417well thats where con artists come into play
I think this is it he covered for him . The theft part could be that ippei did ask for the money but lied what it was about . I could see that being the real story as well
Jake doesn’t realize, illegal bookmaker could use that info against Ohtani and have him fix prop bets or influence outcome of a game. That’s why it’s against the MLB rules to use an illegal bookmaker even if you’re not betting on baseball.
which is still so hard to believe because ohtani is richer than rich. why would he feel threatened when he could pay off all those debts in an instant and not miss it???? that’s pocket change for him.
Shohei announcing his sweet 16 picks today
Ohtani understands basic English, but nothing too deep. Lucas Giolito said to Chris Rose that Ippei would translate more in-depth conversations between the players to Ohtani.
Yeah, as someone who grew up in a bilingual household, I understood almost everything my parents/relatives would say when they gossiped etc but when they'd watch Korean news, I understood almost nothing. This is why I hate it when people criticize players from abroad for using translators in press conferences. Even native English speakers get stuff taken out of context all the time. I would NOT feel comfortable not using a translator if I weren't a native English speaker.
@@globetrekkerfromCAexactly
I don't know about anything else, but it is extremely understandable that Ohtani can speak conversational/baseball english and not understand the detailed nuance of Ippei/Friedman explaining Ohtani paid the bookie himself. It might not even be true, but it is very believable.
It feels like one massive thing that people are not factoring in here is just how insane addiction can be. Like it can turn you into an actually insane person. The turnaround between the 90-minute interview and the next day "that was all lies and now I'm ready to face all consequences" thing seems crazy, but also completely in line with how an addict thinks and operates. The old adage is "an addict will steal your wallet and then help you look for it." When an addict gets caught, they only tell the minimum level of truth they think they need to and surround it with lies, trying to save as much face as possible.
exactly this. it’s a real disease and affects people in so many ways. especially those closest to the addict.
I have worked in accounting and finance for decades and it was shocking to see how easily employees and associates stole from wealthy people or businesses. I have seen fraudulent wire transfers, fabricated checks, forged checks, etc. With that said, all these angles seem very plausible. Also, it is impossible to cover this up at this point bc you have various LE agencies involved, a financial trail, and the actual bookie's identity. You're also going to have a hoard of investigative journalists digging ... the truth will come out.
Right, and Ippei would have to be there for all contract/bank negotiations, so he likely would have access to Ohtani's signature etc
This is correct
I agree. It happens in the nonprofit sector constantly. You hope there’s someone paying attention but there isn’t always.
One comment about the IG Wife announcement, it’s actually very common for famous Japanese people to announce marriages that way. It’s often a sudden text post with an apology lol, very Japanese. if the other person is not a public figure they may never even be named by the mainstream media.
The Japanese media are also terrifyingly intrusive; they would 've hunted down his wife's family, co-workers, college friends, etc. Shohei, basically being the most famous person in Japan, wanted to protect her identity before he married her. If you lived in a culture where your wife/her family/her friends were in danger or being harassed, wouldn't you do all you could to protect her??
You guys have covered this whole situation like shit and I’m a marlins fan lol
For being one of the top podcasts, the coverage and takes have been so ignorant and out of touch. I'm actually kind of embarrassed for them - especially Jomboy. They just seem so clueless. Why don't you guys bring on a Japanese reporter or someone who knows more about the culture if you want to expose your audience to what is actually going on??
Im just surprised no one has comment on shohei's reputation as someone who DOES NOT care about money. All the past talk about him sending almost all his money back home, and living on quite a merger allowance, especially for a superstar. Yeah, he signed the biggest contract ever, but he is on record saying something to the effect of, I wish I could just defer every dollar. He's effectively playing for 1 mil a year and retiring on 70 mil a year for 10 years
Doesn’t that just support the idea that he’d be willing to help Ippei pay off his debts without asking too many questions
That’s why I’m willing to go out on such a limb, beyond just being a dodgers fan. There is real reason to think ohtani is an honest hardworking person that wouldn’t get caught up in this kind of thing. Ippei? Not so much, he’s much more of an unknown quantity.
I think it’s quite likely that he lied/manipulated his way into the interpreter role by making up working with the Red Sox for example, and he leveraged that position as an interpreter into becoming much more than just that over time. This could just be a web of lies finally crashing down. It doesn’t even have to be the most malicious planned out thing in the world, just someone wanting to be close to power and then trying to use that to his benefit to fund his gambling addiction. But it’s not that he necessarily planned from the beginning to steal millions from ohtani.
@@NutRacer22 yes, but if he wasn't aware that the bookie was not licensed then did he do anything "wrong"? Obviously they would say that its stolen because ignorance isnt a legal defense, but it is a moral defense.
It doesn't make sense for a millionaire like Ohtani to make bets on house credit. That's like a millionaire taking out a car loan to buy a Honda Civic. It just doesn't make any sense.
Straight up, IF sho was a gambler, you know that boy would have cash 💵
Gambling is an addiction, just like drinking and drugs. Being a millionaire with any kind of addiction will just amplify the issue. The dots I'm having trouble connecting is how a bookie would allow a $300k salary man to accumulate $4.5 million in debts?
Gambling is an addiction, just like drinking and drugs. Being a millionaire with any kind of addiction will just amplify the issue. The dots I'm having trouble connecting is how a bookie would allow a $300k salary man to accumulate $4.5 million in debts?
because he bet when he was on the road, and not in southern california where he can send the translator with cash i guess lol!!!
really rich people gamble on house credit all the time - its literally how Vegas casinos or small poker/card places work
Im not saying that it is, but there are COUNTLESS stories of managers, friends, family, ect. stealing so much from someone who became successful and trusted them. Maybe i dont want to believe Sho had anything to do with it, but i also just dont believe it.
Yeah, I don’t see why it’s that hard to believe that Shohei got burned by a friend. I feel like most people have endured some type of betrayal by someone close to them, it’s just that most of us aren’t billion dollar baseball superstars. Obviously we don’t know the truth, but it seems weird to me that people are so skeptical that Ippei stealing/deceiving Ohtani is even in the realm of possibility.
@@legendsofthegame394 yo, deadass friend.
@@legendsofthegame394what's skeptical is that Ohtanis team knew about it but didn't inform Ohtani.
@@Jack-jx6ln All communication went through Ippei for a long time. Maybe they thought they did inform Ohtani but Ippei lied. Maybe his team is really just that incompetent. Obviously the situation is crazy, but we’ll find out the truth. I just don’t like that people being confused by an incomplete story somehow must mean he’s guilty.
Bro, took like 10 mins for Jake to understand why Ohtani's name on the transfers is a big deal.
I was thinking the same thing, almost seemed like he still didn’t understand that lmao!
Jake not understanding something? Big shocker
Honestly, it's pretty wild to me that that wasn't the headline to this story when it broke. Instead, everyone focused on the firing of the interpreter, but that was far less newsworthy to me than the fact that his name was on the transfer. Secondarily, the most interesting part was the interpreter changing his story.
Yeah that was wild! I was beginning to think I was dumb or something. Or that he was dumb.
“I’ve seen it in Hard Ball…” best quote ever
Because who gives a shit
In Japanese culture saying, "Normal Japanese woman" isn't offensive
Exactly, "normal" means "non-celebrity" in Japanese media, and there are rules as to what Japanese media can expose. For example if the wife was a public figure (celebrity/current athlete), they can freely publish her face. If Shohei didn't expose her identity , they would have to blur her face in public. Shohei chose to release her identity because the Japanese media was going insane and basically putting a bounty on her photograph.
Segment brought you by DraftKings
The craziest part of this whole video imo
its sad lol
Thank you guys for talking about this tough topic. A lot of people I think are nervous in US baseball media to discuss. Appreciate you guys bringing your thoughts to us. Especially given the lack of additional details on this currently murky topic.
“You know what isn’t a gamble? Getting seats with our next sponsor Seat Geek!”
Seat geek isn't gambling organization lol
You guys should get an agent on the show sometime to talk about the nuances of current mlb contracts. What’s allowed, what’s not, what options are brought to the table. Would be a fun listen!
The amount of speculation on fucking Shohei laughing on a damn Tuesday is fucking insane. What are we doing here?!
I’m surprised Jake doesn’t think it’s a big deal that it’s an illegal bookie vs a legit gambling establishment. Illegal bookies tend to really crappy things like get players to throw games to pay off their debts whereas casinos are not known for doing that. So it’s a big reason for concern and why especially it’s prohibited within the league.
Great episode!
Remember Jomboy's coverage of the Aaron Judge Goldilocks ball controversy? Yeah, I don't either.
For a baseball company, Jimmy’s bias fucks any credibility
@@Big-bf9xxYep
Because it was a non-story
@@chrisws1878 It was a non-story for those who would have contracts/bottom lines or their inner child affected by acknowledging it.
Because his name is on a bank wire doesn't mean Ohtani sent the wire. The bookie said he never dealt with Ohtani, no contact at all.
This happened months ago and was out. He had to know before they were joking and laughing together in the dugout before Game 1 in Korea a few days ago. Doesnt look like how 2 would interact if 4.5 mil was stolen.
You're either a dodgers fan or an ohtani fanboy
Correct it doesn’t mean he sent the wire, but that’s the less likely assumption. Ohtani helping his friend seems more likely than his friend managing his bank account without supervision while stealing 4.5 million….
. @bobbleheadbob
Disagree. I don't think he'd risk his careert getting involved with gambling problems
Not true. Reports are coming out the bookie was telling people that Ohtani is a client.
Why is trev always gone for dodger slander lol
The best part of this whole thing is Dodger fans online squirming, trying to deflect, and pretending like Shohei can't even speak English. LOL
there’s a difference between speaking a language conversationally and the level he would need to understand what’s happening here. what do YOU not understand about that…?
Last Jays spring training game against the Pirates. Their announcer just called IKF "Kiner-Falafel".
Guards home opener will be right after the eclipse. We're in the line of sight so as long as it's not too cloudy, it'll probably be pretty nuts. Home Opener is always nuts, but they're expecting something like 2 million people to come to the Greater Cleveland area.
Surely the comments will understand the difference between a player employed by the MLB betting on MLB games is different than 2 guys with a podcast.
Surely.
Surely commenters understand that the problem isn't a moral stance against gambling but rather the conflict of interest that comes from gambling in a game you play in
Surely people will understand that there’s a reason MLB makes it against the rules to use an illegal bookmaker, despite allowing players to gamble legally.
“Trevor’s Flushings” 😂
Love the episode
When is the braves preview?
So Ohtani only realized 4.5 million was missing after it makes the news 😂😂😂😅😅😅😅
Everyone who ever played baseball in high school up north would have played many 40 degree games
Bro did Jake have too many Kushy Dreams before this ep lol
Shohei is supposed to address the media today and hopefully can add some clarity from his perspective.
Yankees fan, big Jomboy Media fan, but you guys have covered this like shit. Half way through the discussion, right where Jake said Shohei gambling himself was option number one, I pressed like just to support the channel and stopped listening until you talked about something else.
People seem to think Shohei manages his finances the same way we do, checking his bank app everytime he pays at the gas station to not overdraft his account. The guy is a fucking entity, you think Rob from Bank of America has a direct line to Shohei's phone to confirm his recurring netflix payment? No. You know who he may call to confirm something? His secretary/personal assistant. Because I know it may be hard to believe but Ippei's job was not just to help him with mound visits, scouting reports and interviews. His job is to digest information for Ohtani and give it to him. It's not so hard to believe he could divert funds from one of Shohei's possible many accounts where he keeps his investments and has constant traffic in and out. And even if there was anybody questioning it, if we believe the fact the he was the last part of the bottleneck for anything going to Shohei, he could easily just say "yeah, he authorizes it" and that was it.
An addict will steal your wallet and help you look for it two minutes later. If you still believe Shohei placing illegal bets is option number one, that's just because it's what you want to believe, because everything surrounding all of this points toward every other direction.
Gambling is ruining sports.
Ippei doing a full 90 minute then back tracking everything is just so fishy. Especially considering Ohtanis team set up the interview which they later admonished
It seems like his spokespeople and agent were still relying on Ippei for communication throughout the process. Either way, his legal team was clearly not consulted despite connections to criminal activity, which makes me think that the person who set up the interview was just completely incompetent.
Was a great statement. Let's play ball!
I dont think I will fully understand all parts of this story until I read the wikipedia article next offseason...
My theory is that Shohei is actually a cyborg created by the Japanese government to funnel US dollars back to Japan.
As well as hit homers. Japanese engineering at its finest
#Android 17
Gay cyborg to be exact
Japanese version of valmorphication from Team America world police….
Japan and China own the majority of American debt so that is a solid premise.
In the dugout Shohei did not know yet. When he found out on the bus back to the hotel THEN you bet your ass he started to question what the hell was going on.
Snoop fired that blunt roller.
Jake was pissing me off at first his “WHYS”
Strange that Trevor is staying out of all these discussions about this situation 🧐
Its amazing how all these places SUDDENLY say he didnt go to school there or didnt work there, but before all this they never said shit
It’s not sudden. It’s extremely easy to believe no one relevant at those places looked at the Angels personnel website.
Jomboy realizes he’s part of the problem lol
This Jake doesn't seem to understand how violating federal gaming laws could be blackmail?
Good batting, strengthen defense
My comment on Ippeis hair. He looks like the long lost son of Yoko Ono and John Lennon with that beetles ass looking hair😂
Out on the hair, draft king mikes is dope .
The problem with the loan / theft argument is that the money didn't go to Ippei's account as a loan would, it went directly to the bookie.
I would say it would be even more strange if Shohei went through all this trouble to gamble through Ippei, just to make the payments directly from an account with his name on it. Ohtani has never managed his own finances, it wouldn’t be that surprising if Ippei tricked him into believing the money was going to him when it wasn’t. Or Ippei actually did somehow wire the funds without authorization from Shohei and just lied to ESPN to cover his ass from prison time.
@@legendsofthegame394 Occam's razor says it's probably the first story of Ohtani covering his friends debt, but is now taking the fall.
@@terb44 I agree, just saying that it’s also possible that he was deceived. Regardless I doubt Shohei will get in trouble if the OG story is true. It is illegal but I think intent matters.
This is nutty

Was Jake’s brain broken this episode? I don’t know what point he was arguing with Jimmy in the beginning lol
Too many kushies haha jk. Probably a case of the Mondays
He is saying it makes no sense that he would use an illegal bookie when he could simply use a legal one thats close by
I think that's what excited him about these bets...
It’s Jake bro, what do you expect?
@@Reaperherpderp there are no legal bookies in California. Every bookie would be an illegal bookie.
The problem with Ohtani's Camp's sell is that it doesn't work in EITHER direction:
1. You're selling that Ohtani was just utterly oblivious and shuttered off from everything by a single man, after spending years painting him as a super savvy human who has made the correct call at every avenue or...
2. You're painting Ippei as this monster con man who wasn't smart enough to cover his tracks of DIRECTLY TRANSFERRING 4.5M to a bookie from Shohei's account.
BOTH stories from his camp are contradictory within the story itself!!!
MLB The Show '21 legend David Fletcher
I speak Japanese and went over some interviews where Ippei was being a translator and he deff spoke Japanese and English
Where did Jimmy find Ippei's text history with the bookie?
i don’t think there’s a text history with the bookie. what you’re referring to, i’m assuming, is the text exchange between the ESPN reporter tisha thompson and ippei, which is in her article.
Someone else said this is giving Manti Te’o vibes. 😂🤔😂
10:15 did Jake’s brain malfunction there? 😆
Jarred cosart got caught gambling with an illegal bookie in 2015 and only got a fine from MLB
guys, speaking as a half japanese person (my mother is a japanese national), i can totally see shohei having been grossly naive. it's hard to fathom, but believe it or not, most japanese people are culturally still SO honor bound that they do not see or expects the levels of deceit that we Americans see every day. they might expect it from a non-japanese person, but it's entirely possible they would take a japanese person's words at face value. japanese are a very literal people in many respects. for example, sarcasm often goes over a japanese person's head. younger japanese generations are generally better about this as theyre more attuned to western culture. not to say that japanese people are all 100% honest (though i will point out the astonishingly low crime rates in japan, generally, aside from those attributed to yakuza activity) but deceit means dishonor. honor suicide is still a very real thing in japan. that is how culturally honor bound japanese generally are. I of course admit my own bias because ohtani sama is a national and cultural icon but given the clouds surrounding ippei in the fallout of the gambling scandal (to wit, the truths about his fabricated resume at a minimum) i firmly believe that shohei did not know the full extent of what was happening. is he 100% absolved? no. as a japanese-american, i will be more than disappointed if i turn out to be wrong and/or shohei is kicked out of baseball. It will kill the sport.
@This is such a great point. I think most people are trying to place themselves in Shohei’s situation, but it’s impossible to accurately do so when you’re from a completely different culture and background than he is. Just because we would do things a certain way doesn’t mean that others would.
This is what all these guys are lacking. The knowledge of cultural background, nuance, and perspective to understand what happened. They just sound like clueless and ignorant Westerns talking nonsense.
@3:00 this section is sponsored by Draft Kings
Why is Jomboy surprised that an illegal gambling ring would allow someone to rack up immense debt?
Until service fees are reigned in on ticket sites then I could care less about this
Ippei might be the real life Mitch Connor
Yea this story is wild. A lot of it feels like bs and I know his presser today won’t give any clarification whatsoever
I’ve seen it in Hard Ball
Lol
In on Ippei’s hair, he got that emo boy look
He should have used draft kings man!
ippei doesnt speak a word of japanese, ohtani just rly liked his vibe
People are saying “an addict would lie about anything exc exc” and I get that but going public saying Ohtani covered his debts wasn’t going to protect him from anything.
So why say Ohtani knew? What does he gain from that?
And he had to know if he had actually stolen from him that Ohtani would refute it.
This is the answer. Power of Attorney(POA) or check writing privileges 。 Ohtani is completely innocent。
DANIEL KIM said, When I worked as an interpreter, I had to assist the players on just about every aspect of their daily lives. These include: opening bank accounts, taking them to DMV to get licenses, and setting up utilities. I also carried their check books on the road for clubhouse dues.
There are a lot of lessons in all this. One might be that it was always unfair of us to see Shohei as some sort of saint. Of course this could be an example of him bailing Ippei out. But if it isn't this, then shohei probably has some other unsavory thing that would change our opinion of him. We all do. The man is exceptional at baseball. He seems like a good dude. But now that we're made to question aspects of his life it was always unrealistic to think of him as perfect
this story is a complete 180 from ohtani’s super secret free agency. everyone thought this guy has everything about his life under lock and key.
Why would anyone lie about graduating from UC Riverside
Pete Rose is rolling his eyes... 🤔⚾️
Out on Ippei’s hair. Looks like a hockey helmet made from natural materials.
I think the legal betting sites are just angry that he used an illegal bookie.😎😝
I would have liked to have JD Martinez in the Giants lineup, but don't blame him one bit for wanting to play in a park where he projects better stats. Better than hearing he doesn't like the front office or wouldn't want to live here!
I’m out on the hair
I honestly think Shohei knows where the lost city of Atlantis is
I worked for MLB game day staff and our players left their March Madness and Fantasy Football stuff on the whiteboard for everyone to see. Nobody cared
Jake the reason why you would use an illegal bookie is so you don’t have to pay taxes on your winnings!
Ippei definitely got his hairstyle during the emo era and just never changed it
Ippei is definitely an old looking 39. Would not be surprised if it turned out he was like early 50s.
Out on ippei’s hair
His hair is definitely 2010ish which allows me to believe he completely fooled Ohtani. Also Ippe is probably from Irvine.
A media company claims a love for baseball and growing the game but makes a video without hearing Ohtani’s side of the story and pushes out conspiracy theories for engagement.. with a draft kings sponsorship 🤦🏻
Swindlers are just so good at swindling, from an outside perspective it seems unbelievable, but it’s true. Also, I’m ignorant in this but - wouldn’t illegal booking not care about a betting limit like legal betting companies do?
They’d certainly care about a betting limit. They want to get paid. They don’t just issue millions of dollars of credit to people that can’t back it up. Often the consequences are worse with getting into debt with a illegal bookie.
I’m so out on Ippei’s hair
Ippei ay!
Ipe was given a 4.5 million line of credit with a bookie? A guy who probably makes around 150-200k a year? Maybe that guestimate is low but still…
I BET Ohtani gets off Free and clear 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
