The history lesson, the supporting local restaurants, the exposure to other cuisines, the pet appearances, the jokes...I love everything about this video 🥰😄 Thanks YB!
Vietnamese food is the freaking best 😭. Thanks for featuring Viet food and doing your best to pronounce the names! Also Herbert's descriptions are so funny lmao "it's like a burrito with a window".. I meannnn I guess he's not wrong 😂
I'm Vietnamese, and I think you did an awesome job for introducing the cuisine for a non-Vietnamese person. I admit that the pronunciation could use some work, but you have tried your best doing research and that's more than enough for me when I compare with other foodies. I love how you have an affinity for all cultures and make the effort in learning about the cuisine. I love your content, YB!
Herbert makes the joke and himself laughs at it before yb even has a chance. It's like with every video we're seeing his metamorphosis into Michael Scott! 😄😄
As a Vietnamese, I enjoyed this video so so much. Next time, you should try Bún Chả Hà Nội (it’s hot stuff, a variation of the Bún you featured). And try the Northern Phở as well, it seems to me that the Phở you two were eating was a Southern variation, both taste fantastic but the Northern style tastes very different from its Southern counterpart. P/s: I can confirm that in Vietnam, people use nước mắm (or fish sauce) way more than soy sauce.
My favorite video by far! Definitely needs a part 2. If you like spring rolls, try nem nướng cuốn (grilled pork spring rolls). My other favorites: bún riêu (crab, pork tomato soup), bún bò huế (spicy beef noodles), bo luc lac (vietnamese shaking beef), bánh cuốn (steamed rice rolls) and chè ba màu (3 color dessert). Cheers! 🍜
Loved seeing you both enjoy Viet food! Would love to see you try bun bo hue and bo kho! Both warm and rich noodle soup dishes that are underrated in North America :)
I love Herbert’s closing statements, especially the ping ping ping 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hey YB, please try Indonesian food! Rendang (claimed as #1 favorite meals in CNN travel for years), nasi uduk, etc. Indonesia has so many food varieties, so you may try the unique menus! I knew buzzfeed and Keith made a video trying indonesian food, but they try the common and comfort food, such as fried noodle, fried rice, etc. so please try other menu :)
Always enjoy seeing a new video from you guys!! Never had Vietnamese food wow!! I am inspired to try it. :-) I can’t believe how well behaved Louie is!! Hope you feel better soon YB!! 🌈🦋
I love the little history lessons in your videos YB. Would love to see it continue. Also enjoy seeing a number of Vietnamese People in the comments. Lol
I miss having Pho the the vietnamnese restaurant I used to go to (unfortuntely closed due to lockdown). I always get the combination (beef, chicken, tripe, pig's blood, quail eggs, tendons, beef peppercorn sausgae) and then put heaps of beanshoots and vietnamnese basil on top and lots of siracha. Fun fact: I think the lid can also be used as a base to support your bowl so it doesn't slide
I love this video a lot! I visited my vietnamese mom today and we had Goi cuon. I absolutley love them and they're so healthy because you don't fry them like normal spring rolls. In Germany we actually call them 'Summerrolls' and we eat them as a main course
Instead of frying egg rolls like normal via oil in a pot, a lot of people have been putting them in the air fryer these days. They're a lot crunchier that way too and I feel less guilty eating them when made this way 😅
for a non-Viet speaker, your Viet is spot on, YB!! Btw, Bun is pronounced like "Boon". And lol~ Could yall sleep after those coffee? Viet coffee is the devil! OMG!
Your videos always make me so hungry! Besides Phò, I must admit that my knowledge of Vietnamese food is very limited compared to other East and South East Asian cuisines. We have a bunch of Thai restaurants in my area but I can’t think of any Vietnamese ones so I’ll have to do a Google deep dive to find a good one. My towns Asian market is pretty decent and I’m a decent cook so maybe I could attempt to make some of these dishes myself.
The eggrolls, cha gio chay, the word chay rhymes with guy. It means vegetarian. Lol The banh xeo is made typically with a rice flour and tapioca flour blend with coconut milk. Tumeric and a bit of curry powder to give it that yellow color.. At least the ones I'm used to are. You typically wrap some of it in lettuce and then dip it into the fish sauce. And you have to pour the fish sauce over the bun dish. So glad you're eating and introducing vietnamese cuisine dishes other than pho! Like you said, we have so much more to offer. Thank you for this video! Loved it
Just for clarification, the banh xeo is colored with tumeric but they're so delicious! As a Vietnamese American, I grew up surrounded by Viet culture thanks to the community I live in being a big Vietnamese community and I'm very grateful for that. I've actually found I can eat a lot of foods that even some Vietnamese born and raised in the motherland can't even stomach, like bun mam; a lot of elders are suprised I can eat it 😅.
me first looking: 4:46 she looks good in a nurse outfit. my brain: a what? idiot, look again. me: oh, that's a futbol jersey. subconscious: we're just gonna file that one away and bring up the memory in 2 weeks.
lol when my family makes cha gio it is mostly meat with just some carrots and jicama. but now my mouth is watering bc i love vietnamese food so much. i highly recommend banh canh cua and canh chua ca are my favorite soupy dishes. I am a weird vietnamese person though because I rarely eat the fresh herbs and I hate cilantro.
and bo nuong vi is a great idea for parties. it is similar to kbbq but we cook the meat, shrimp and calamari in butter and wrap it up in rice paper and salad to eat. If we are feeling fancy we will get salmon and bo la lot(leaf wrapped spiced beef) some people will marinate the beef or pork slices with lemongrass but we usually just slap it on the grill with some butter or sesame oil
@@YBChangOfficial if you are ever in Anaheim and you are looking for authentic vietnamese food I would recommend Quan Vy Da for central Vietnamese food. the spicy beef noodle soup (bun bo hue) and combination appetizer platter is great. in typical fashion the service is not great but that's how you know the food is good lol. love ur show!
I liked that you were trying to pronounce it right, but maybe next (although this is also not always perfect) listen to what google translate has to say. At least for vietnamese, the pronunciation is good :D
Yay YB! I'm glad you were able to try bánh xèo! Originally from the states but currently living in Shanghai and I've been craving it hardcore! So it's more or less pronounced like "bun sale" but it's a really light L-sound. And my family eats it like it's an unwich! So you take the lettuce and a piece of the crepe and you wrap it up like a burrito, then you dip in the fish sauce. So good! Hope you guys liked it enough to order again!
I love this video YB! I got a kick out of you trying to pronounce the dishes haha. Vietnamese pronunciations aren't like English pronunciations,. For example, we have multiple Vietnamese vowels (such as 3 diff a's) due to the accent marks so it changes the pronunciation and the word completely. Meanwhile, in some words the first letter is more silent. Great job!!
There are a few ways to eat it - put them all in a bowl with veggies, eat it straight up, or wrap them in spring rolls. Putting them in a spring roll is my favorite way.

Have you tried ones wrapped with rice paper? I find them more delicious and crunchier than the ones wrapped with wonton wrappers (the ones that are shown here).
This isn't even the best of it!! Please do another video and try Vietnamese egg coffee or fresh squeezed sugarcane juice, can chua (tamarind fish soup), thit nuong (grilled lemongrass meat, so good!), Bun Bo Hue (pronounced Boon Bal Hoo-wehh) , and silken tofu pudding with ginger syrup, banh bot loc (banh bohc laock) Vietnamese has one of the most difficult pronunciations and no direct romanization so don't beat yourself up if you can't pronounce it YB!! 💜 It's actually so hard to freakin' learn. I failed language classes lol Maybe it's a Cali thing, but we only have pork and shrimp egg rolls with noodles, wood ear mushrooms, and carrots here lol. Never seen a veggie Vietnamese eggroll in my life 😮 Also never seen the cold noodle dish. Bun just translates to literally "noodles" lol The spring rolls where I'm from usually come with peanut dipping sauce (Looks like hoisin? in the video) Hope you get to try it sometime! Sorry for the long comment, I just got excited XD

aww thank you for watching!! ❤️
First video of you instant fan instant sub. I'm a Vietnamese guy living in Hungary.
banh xeo is made of rice flour, water (or some put coconut cream but not usually), and turmeric -- which gives it the yellow color.

I'd recommend next time wrapping the banh xeo pieces in lettuce and dipping it into the fish sauce! So yummy
Would love to see a Herbert takeover every once and a while.

yb, the bun xeo crepe is made out of tumeric, coconut milk, and rice flour!! sometimes people mix beer into the mixture so it's extra crunchy :)
