I live in Fairfax County Virginia and everyone complained about lunch food. But the food is ok and looks edible. I want to see if the school you go to has food or bad food compared to mine. The district is FCPS look it up to see the food we get.
At the schools I have gone to that have cafeterias, they serve simple lunch. You get access to bread, crispbread, butter, cheese, caviar, fish spread, Pork Liver Pâté/paste (Tastes really damn good) sometimes eggs, some veggies etc... Then there is usually a hot meal on a specific day. As for drinks we usually have access to water, milk and coffee (if you are at Middle School - High School). The food at American schools just don't look any good at all. It's all processed, ain't fresh. Fuck, I think the processed food is probably more expensive than fresh food.

It’s a difficult dilemma because schools SHOULD have the responsibility to give kids healthy food, as America needs to have a better atmosphere when it comes to food. I live in Ireland and I went to a small school with almost no funding and were on the brink of closing down...and we had a private chef that cooked us amazing homemade food every day....so schools can't complain about it being too expensive to feed the students good food.
Small schools are very different than large schools, though! I went to a small elementary school in California and we had chefs too. But once I moved to a larger school, it was all processed. We had lunch ladies who made some food but they couldn't keep up with the 1000+ students though :(

A lot of that crap holds very little nutritional value. Eating healthy can be reasonably affordable, but it's not cheap. The best that can be said for the stuff in this video is that the food is kind of low in fat.

School lunch is literally trash. We have pizza everyday that literally tastes like cardboard, barely any sauce, bland cheese and stale crust. The burgers literally smelled like a horse stable and the fruit always has a chemical taste that makes me lose my appetite. Adults and teachers need to try this shit before they start saying it’s good for you.
That's the reason I just buy chips and water at the end of the lunch line instead of eating their crap food. Its honestly just about as filling as the normal lunch imo
My nephew would always complain about the packages apples at school, one day I got tired of hearing the constant complaining so I told him to bring a package of the apples home and I’d eat them just to show him they were not that bad. At the end of the day he had the apples and when I bit into one it tasted like goddamn formaldehyde. If schools fucked up packaged apples I can not imagine how terrible the food is.
These regulations started I think about 7 years ago and at the time I was in 6th grade. One of my heroes was this 70ish year old head lunch lady (she looked exactly almost down to the clothes like Mrs.Finster from recess and she was just as loud and fierce). She never changed her recipes and lied on the paperwork so the public school wouldn't lose its lunch funding and to make sure she got enough supplies to keep cooking and cook she could. When she finally retired my family when to the school and wrote down her recipes. They were very unhealthy but the taste made it worth it.

I didn't eat the food in elementary mind you, they forced you to buy it, so the teachers constantly tried to get me to eat it, even calling my mom, but I became very skinny and in very bad health, I am getting better now

Hollow it out into a bowl on the side (keep the skins). Mash up what you put in the bowl, add in some minced bell pepper, add some tuna, season it, stir it up, scoop it into the avocado skins you put to the side earlier (or just eat it straight out of the bowl, the skins are just for presentation/feeling fancy while you basically eat straight up guacamole)._ _Fancy avocado snack/guacamole if you want to use it as guacamole._ _Vegetables. Cook them. Almost every cafeteria is not even the school's it's from places lime Cartwells who feed millions every day. Completely fresh ingredients are hard to get in such large quantities and built to last. The food you say can add up quick in expense. At my school you get a fruit ,a vegetable,a milk, and an entree with at least 2 sides . Thats all only 3 dollars for a reason , cause the company's try hard to make it as affordable and good as possible with a budget. Kids need to learn to either pack or deal with what's given to them ( under the right circumstances) Public school food will never be great , but that's just a cost of cheap large-scale food service.

The lunches I have in England at school are things like Monday is fish and saled with a fruit pot and milk, Tuesday is like pasta wensday is spaghetti with a fruit saled on the side Thursday is like a Sunday roast. Friday is pizza and saled . But hay we don't have gourmet food like the French lol
The problem is that they must make prices more expensive in order to truly fix the problems with school lunch. Honestly, I would rather pay more for a better/bigger lunch. The average American consumes $7800 worth of food per year, or $1560 per sixth for 5/6 of their meals because school lunch accounts for 1/6 of your total meals. If school lunch. 1560/180(days of school) is around 8.66 dollars, meaning that if a school lunch costs $8, it would still actually be cheaper buying school lunch than only buying from the store. So in my opinion there is plenty of room to make school lunch more expensive and in theory improve quality. You could make the price 5 dollars, leaving $3 for snacks if needed because you buy snacks in real life. Currently, the average price of a school lunch is $3. You could still have the cheaper option for students who need financial assistance, and for richer students, there could be a premium option that can be both healthy and tasty. From my personal experience, I can assure you these ideas actually work well in real life. At my high school, there is a $3.25 option, a $3.85 option, and once/twice a month, a $4.50 option. The $4.50 option is actually pretty good, the $3.85 is good enough for me, and the $3.25 option is the school lunch we all have grown to hate. I don't mind having to pay a bit extra (it comes out of my own pocket) for the premium option because the health and taste benefits are worth it.

Jo King I'm sure you've never got the bliss of experiencing: Going to sink your teeth into an apple only to find the core had fucking rotted in on itself, take a bite from a BBQ sandwich only to feel the soft squish of literal chunks of veins/intestine, ordered a salad only to find a majority of the leaves are wilted and slimed, or sat down to eat pizza only to find the underside is a shade of purple from mold.
This was one of those things that looked good on paper but due to the laziness on their part it was bad in practice. They should have to get fresh fruits and veggies not processed canned crap.

Not on an "American" food. Branch out to something like Asian cafeteria food and then you can. Rice (usually mixed rice), soup, side of meat, and 2 sides of veggie based.
I mean I've been vegan since I was 13 and vegan meals which alot healthier I might add is pretty cheap. So long as it's fresh fruits and vegetables and not that canned crap. I've had their salad stuff when I was in school and the lettuce I had was so flimsy and didn't even taste fresh. A good amount of the products they server are not fresh what so ever. Just depends on your luck I guess.

Damn, we have no boxed stuff, no junk food, no single use plates or utensils in Latvia. Our system is that you get one plate of food (usually a meat, a starch, and a vegetable) and you either eat it or leave it. I feel we're lucky.

You can make healthy foods taste good, but this is one of those cases where you can slap a 'heathy' on it but that doesn't mean kids will choke it down. I remember my school trying to serve 'skim milk' instead of 1%, I got the chocolate milk and it was 80% water 20% milk, milk shouldn't be translucent, it tasted horrible. I'm happy they're trying to introduce a healthier diet to kids, but they should have tried it first before asking kids to eat it.
I grew up on crappy food, it was the fact that took high school nutrition class did i change my diet around. Educating students to make the right choices is more important than restricting their freedom of choice.

We WERE hungry. I've long since graduated, but I lost SO MUCH WEIGHT from this shit. I was already underweight, but by the time I finished school, I was borderline Emaciated. It was even WORSE because they wouldn't let me pack my own lunch. If I did, they would take it from me and throw it away.

Milk is fine... but they really should offer water and maybe some other juices besides orange juice. I didn't know it at the time when I was in school but I have what I think is a cow's milk allergy (not lactose intolerance as I was tested and found that I can digest lactose) and it would be nice for those who can't drink the milk and don't want orange juice.
I’d like to point out that lunch spending in 2011 was only $103 million when it was $125 million in 2005. Factor in inflation, and the amount and quality of food that the district can buy is drastically down, especially after accounting population growth on top of all that. School districts need to be leaner and more efficient.
That is why I send my kids to school with a 4L double basket deep fryer with chicken tendies and some chips to fry those bad boys up. Plus I gota make it healthy for them so I give em a gallon of ranch for their daily veg.

Hai Nguyen Well the US gov has to pay for many of kids lunches so if you want better lunches the tax would have to raise and parents would actually have to pay for there kids food check out how expensive it is to live in France There quality of life is better but more expensive.
It's not even a case of "oh they just dont want to eat healthy food, silly kids", it's that american schools have been amputated of the ability to actually make fresh meals. Everything is prepackaged, frozen and then thawed and reheated, no wonder they don't want to eat it, it looks and probably tastes like mushy garbage. Would you eat that shit if it was served to you, and then you still had to actually pay for it, sometimes up to $5 a day?

School lunch is literally trash. We have pizza everyday that literally tastes like cardboard, barely any sauce, bland cheese and stale crust. The burgers literally smelled like a horse stable and the fruit always has a chemical taste that makes me lose my appetite. Adults and teachers need to try this shit before they start saying it’s good for you.

When this changed happened at my school the “fresh” fruit had mold on it and the turkey sandwich made 4 kids in my class sick.
My nephew would always complain about the packages apples at school, one day I got tired of hearing the constant complaining so I told him to bring a package of the apples home and I’d eat them just to show him they were not that bad. At the end of the day he had the apples and when I bit into one it tasted like goddamn formaldehyde. If schools fucked up packaged apples I can not imagine how terrible the food is.

These regulations started I think about 7 years ago and at the time I was in 6th grade. One of my heroes was this 70ish year old head lunch lady (she looked exactly almost down to the clothes like Mrs.Finster from recess and she was just as loud and fierce). She never changed her recipes and lied on the paperwork so the public school wouldn't lose its lunch funding and to make sure she got enough supplies to keep cooking and cook she could. When she finally retired my family when to the school and wrote down her recipes. They were very unhealthy but the taste made it worth it.

I didn't eat the food in elementary mind you, they forced you to buy it, so the teachers constantly tried to get me to eat it, even calling my mom, but I became very skinny and in very bad health, I am getting better now

amy small I'm not saying that the food is excusable but its not easy for school's to keep high quality. Almost every cafeteria is not even the school's it's from places lime Cartwells who feed millions every day. Completely fresh ingredients are hard to get in such large quantities and built to last. The food you say can add up quick in expense. At my school you get a fruit ,a vegetable,a milk, and an entree with at least 2 sides . Thats all only 3 dollars for a reason , cause the company's try hard to make it as affordable and good as possible with a budget. Kids need to learn to either pack or deal with what's given to them ( under the right circumstances) Public school food will never be great , but that's just a cost of cheap large-scale food service.

The problem is that they must make prices more expensive in order to truly fix the problems with school lunch. Honestly, I would rather pay more for a better/bigger lunch. The average American consumes $7800 worth of food per year, or $1560 per sixth for 5/6 of their meals because school lunch accounts for 1/6 of your total meals. If school lunch. 1560/180(days of school) is around 8.66 dollars, meaning that if a school lunch costs $8, it would still actually be cheaper buying school lunch than only buying from the store.
So in my opinion there is plenty of room to make school lunch more expensive and in theory improve quality. You could make the price 5 dollars, leaving $3 for snacks if needed because you buy snacks in real life. Currently, the average price of a school lunch is $3. You could still have the cheaper option for students who need financial assistance, and for richer students, there could be a premium option that can be both healthy and tasty.
From my personal experience, I can assure you these ideas actually work well in real life. At my high school, there is a $3.25 option, a $3.85 option, and once/twice a month, a $4.50 option. The $4.50 option is actually pretty good, the $3.85 is good enough for me, and the $3.25 option is the school lunch we all have grown to hate. I don't mind having to pay a bit extra (it comes out of my own pocket) for the premium option because the health and taste benefits are worth it.

I've had their salad stuff when I was in school and the lettuce I had was so flimsy and didn't even taste fresh. A good amount of the products they server are not fresh what so ever. You can make healthy foods taste good, but this is one of those cases where you can slap a 'heathy' on it but that doesn't mean kids will choke it down. I remember my school trying to serve 'skim milk' instead of 1%, I got the chocolate milk and it was 80% water 20% milk, milk shouldn't be translucent, it tasted horrible. I'm happy they're trying to introduce a healthier diet to kids, but they should have tried it first before asking kids to eat it.
I grew up on crappy food, it was the fact that took high school nutrition class did i change my diet around. Educating students to make the right choices is more important than restricting their freedom of choice.
Elementary kids would be more open to change compared to teens because their taste pallet hasn't been compromised by years of binge eating on junk like teens plus the older one gets the more set in our ways we are

We WERE hungry. I've long since graduated, but I lost SO MUCH WEIGHT from this shit. I was already underweight, but by the time I finished school, I was borderline Emaciated. It was even WORSE because they wouldn't let me pack my own lunch. If I did, they would take it from me and throw it away.

What I didn't mention, was that all the weight I lost during school, was weight that I tried for YEARS to put on. I'm in my mid 20's now, and I've only managed to return to about the same weight as I was when I started Middle School.
Not to mention that I now eat like a starving animal without realizing it. They conditioned me to eat as fast as possible so nobody could take my food. It is absolutely horrible what this shit does to kids.

Milk is fine... but they really should offer water and maybe some other juices besides orange juice. I didn't know it at the time when I was in school but I have what I think is a cow's milk allergy (not lactose intolerance as I was tested and found that I can digest lactose) and it would be nice for those who can't drink the milk and don't want orange juice.

I’d like to point out that lunch spending in 2011 was only $103 million when it was $125 million in 2005. Factor in inflation, and the amount and quality of food that the district can buy is drastically down, especially after accounting population growth on top of all that.
