The smell is nearly as good as the heat that comes from the turf fire, on a snowy day in Ireland id love to be in front of one now! Thanks for commenting

I bought some turf on ebay so that I could have a real turf fire and the smell is really lovely! I long for an old cottage on an Irish island. I have some serious "cell memory" going on in my genes.

WOW! Completely ingenious! How very handy! Tell me, why is turf not used for heating/cooking anymore? Seems like a nicely renewable fuel source...

Hi Lisa, it still is used as a fuel though not on the same scale as it once was. Some people still have access to a peat bank and cut their own fuel for the year. There's also some industrial cutting selling the turf for fuel. The turf was creates from decaying trees over 1000s of year so it's not really renewable. Turf can be liken to an immature fossil fuel, a few steps removed from coal. It burns much faster than coal and with a smell that is so delightful! Thanks for the comment Lisa

@@VideosofIrishFarmingLife ok! See, it's good to get educated! I was ignorant of turf's composition! Hahahahahahaha! So, not so easily renewed. What are you using nowadays for fuel?

Most houses are oil fueld with homes in the city having the option of piped gas. Alot of rural homes still use an open fire where turf, wood and coal would be burned. Its near the time of the year of turf cutting and we plan to make video showing the compostion of turf and how it was formed in the bogs of Ireland. What part of the world are you in Lisa?

This reminds me of the time I ate way to much. I was cutting some turf of my own that night, if you know what I mean!

That type of turf cutting was a disaster. Caused the bog to collapse

so why do y'all use turf for fireplaces? I don't know a lot about Ireland but I know there are trees there. is it because of how it burns or just more of it than wood?

These machines will definitely come back, at least at a local level, as the kami-kaze sanctions ricochetting violently back from Russia wreak havoc upon the Euro, the EU and the Irish economy and pushing energy prices through the roof, then people will inevitably return to such a valuable resource, regardless of the totally impracticable carbon neutral ‘green agenda’.
