I want to throw out a challenge on this. Think about it from the perspective of the masses. Most current folks that are just enjoying or learning pokemon (non investors) are exposed to the hobby and enjoy the hobby through what they get at big box stores, and that's ETBs. If you are in this for the long haul (10+ years) the nostalgia factor will be MUCH higher for ETBs than with booster boxes.
@@phillips.collectibles once the value of the content of the boxes diverges from collectability then nostalgia kicks in and ETBs will be revered by the next generation because they were exposed to those vs booster boxes.
I did a quick survey many years ago, and I determined that the value of ETBs vs BBs relative to MSRP performs the same usually. Some have different values. A Burning Shadows ETB performed worse than its BB counterpart. An Unbroken Bonds ETB performed waaaaay better than its BB counterpart. It depends on the set. The reason why I value ETBs a tad more is liquidity. A $1000 BB is going to sit on ebay for awhile. There are far fewer people buying BBs at that price range. It is far easier to sell an ETB for $400 (which would also be 10x MSRP) than a BB at the much higher price.
@@Chuck_Tarnish Unfortunately, with Scarlet and Violet, I have doubts that hold up. Pokemon TCG has printed the heck out of ETBs in this era thus far. Lots of ETBs go for MSRP late into the print cycle. If I had to invest in anything, it would 100% be into ETB PC versions. Those things are this era's 1st edition.
I like PC ETBs but here in Czech Republic we do nota have an access to Pokemon centre and on the secondary market the price is immediately double the retail price…So I rather stick with the BBs. Thanks for a video!
Hey Phillip! Evo Skies ETB is scaling BETTER than the booster box bc of price entry point imo. I bought an Evo Skies ETB last year, and the ETB nearly has a 90% growth vs 75% growth of the Booster Box. Great content as always 😎
Hey Parker I really appreciate the super thanks! You’re a legend. Thanks for watching the content and being part of the community. It’s times like these that make the difference.
within 2 years pretty much all sun and moon etbs were selling for over 100$. rn we are about 2 years out of the sword and shield era and even evo skies etbs have not cracked 100 yet and pretty much every other set is still selling for msrp. i 100 percent agree with you that the game has changed in regards to etbs.
I guess the real question is how much you wanna diversify your pokemon investment and what's to come in the future. Let`s say i have 500$ to spend on this "hobby". I could buy maybe 4 displays depending on the series or i could buy like 12-16 different ETBs. If one display crashes it's 25% of my portfolio, if one ETB crashes it's just around 6-8%. The same goes the other way. If one series gets an hype i just have a chance to hit the right display when buying it. If i buy every cheap ETB i have a 100% chance to catch the hype. Pros and Cons you know.
im on a budget so PC ETBs are the next best thing. Will be getting 2 of each sets and opening one and keeping sealed the other one. Doing this for Surging Sparks, Prismatic Evolutions, Team rocket 2025
It'll be interesting to see the future performance of SV ETB's versus SWSH as they have the promo cards now. Especially the PC exclusive ETBs with the stamped card. Could the PC exclusive ETBs overtake the booster boxes of the same set? I think the OF one might with the Charmander card being amazing and the main set underwhelming.
Nice comparison. Where do you think Evolving Skies regular ETBs will be value wise in 3-5 years when you can no longer get them from any retail Pokémon product? I missed the booster box train however when Costco released an Evo ETB bundle with a tin included with 2 Evo packs inside for 37.99 I jumped all over them for close to 2k in ETB/tin bundles. I would prefer booster boxes but at that value per pack from Costco it was a no brainer. Just more storage space lol.
I started Pokemon collecting almost 2 years ago and started with ETB’s and then quickly went to PC ETB’s and now Booster Boxes. I also started dabbling One Piece, Lorcana and DB Fusion World as still waiting for Pokemon Scarlett and Violet release a banger of a set 😉
Thanks for the tips. I am new to all these, and I live in a not so rich country. For me it is a very big investment to buy the booster box. But 1-2 etb a month are easier to explain to myself :p
@@phillips.collectibles I can’t afford to buy booster boxes. I’ve bought some sword and shield etbs for 40 or less as well as a few paldean fates Charizard tins I found at target the other day. Also one each of chilling reign etb which I think is under rated due to its proximity of ES.
I’ve got a fair amount of diverse sealed but recently I’ve been grabbing up crown zenith booster bundles from Walmart. I absolutely love the set and think plenty others do too. Thoughts?
Can yoy give me advice? I do not play tcg 0% knowledge. But i want to collect ETBs because i love pokemon.. I have two options on mind. Make profit in future or open them just for fun. We'll i still don't know what to do because the prices are not easy money.
I think that the scarlet and violet etb would do better even if they are mainline bc of the promo card. Before there was no reason to buy bc ur just paying for junk but in the S&V era there are promo cards and the illustration is really nice which I think would make the it more sustainable
I’d never buy loose packs from a card shop. They buy booster boxes try and find their 5-8 hits in as few packs as possible and then sell the remaining packs knowing they most likely have grabbed most if not all the hits from the booster boxes.
I am positive this happened to me. We got 4 booster packs from our LGS (1 for me and 1 for each of my kids) from an open booster box and none of us got anything more than a hollow. It could have been just our luck but I was at least hoping the kids would be able to get a basic ex card.
Really good video on this topic however booster box will always outshine in terms of value and rise of value in a long term as long you can keep it sealed and not open it because as you mentioned pokemon is a hobby as well and its a number 1 thing in pokemon that is a hobby and of course an investment but as you said as well you need to have passion for this as well otherwise trust me you will give up and lose the value and money you just spent on the products
I’m wondering if people are confused when they see the black and white era and sun and moon ETBs moving in price. People need to remember these products were not printed like our current ETBs get printed.
Nobody knows the real potential of the Pokemon Center etbs from scarlet and violet , they haven’t had time to age , in a few years I’m guessing collectors who missed out will pay a heavy price
etbs are a lot of packaged air
Yep that’s the one. Pinned comment.

Pokemon is going hardcore woke.
You say 10 years, but I cant imagine pokemon maintaining the brand for much longer.
@@phillips.collectiblesi see old booster boxes for $600 and the same set etbs go for $150-$175. Most people will go for the etbs due to money alone

It's great that you're thinking strategically about your Pokemon investment! Diversification is key in any portfolio.
for special sets do you prefer etb, PC etb, loose booster bundles, booster bundle displays, or something else entirely? if you could only pick 1
That’s a good question I’ll have to think to about it…they all have perks
You think the celebration etb cant raise After the 30 celebration comes out ?

So true! ETB take up storage bro. 100% they should slim them down and be more eco friendly.
For sure…they look great but are so bulky!

Good question! Evolving Skies is the odd one out and whatever has ES is always going to out perform other sets!
If you buy for a collection it doesn’t matter at all but if you invest the BB is the better option. Certain/special editions ETB’s can do very well.
Yeah great way of putting it!

It boils down to cost per pack. If packs are 20$ and I have an etb with 8 packs I’m selling it for 160$.
100% well put. Are you a ETB collector or BB?
