    Question of the day: Have you ever wondered what the guts of a smart home look like? How does this compare to your expectations?

    Thank you for the idea of running wire motorized blinds!!

      Best to do it early on 🙂 Otherwise they would have to rip up the walls. Glad this was helpful!

    Great video. I appreciate the walkthrough. What were the total feet of cat5/6 and RG cable run?

    • @goingtobeapilot
      @goingtobeapilot  3 года назад +4

      Thank you! As far as total feet...they didn’t give us that number but I’d say each run averaged out to probably 100ft (some more, some less). In the end with cameras, control screens, data taps etc. all included I think we have roughly 75 cat6 and 10 rg. So a very rough estimate would be 7,500ft cat6 and 1,000ft rg. Hope that helps 🙂

    Amazing Video! Thank you for the in depth review of the wiring!
    How much did your conduit cost to run from multiple places to the network room?
    Was the cost the same for the Shade drops? and it looks like you ran cat6 for those as well, right?
    Sorry for the questions, I am building a house right now as well. Getting prepared for my electrical meeting

    • @goingtobeapilot
      @goingtobeapilot  3 года назад

      Thank you! Really glad you enjoyed it. The conduits were $149 for a "long run" and $69 for a "short run." The data drops were $74 a piece and you are correct we just used cat6 for the shades as well. You can see why we chose to do so many conduits...if you run 3 wires through a conduit, you've already saved money. I wound up adding almost 30 more wires upstairs that I'll run through the 2 attic conduits after we close. Feel free to ask any more questions! Good luck on your build 🙂

      @@goingtobeapilot Awesome. Thank you for your reply! I do plan on doing conduit for sure. Trying to get an estimate before talking to the electrician. We have two stories but no basement. So I think I am going to have most of the cables ran downstairs and then conduit mostly upstairs and do exactly what you are. Automatic shades are a big want for me so hoping to have the budget to do those. Thanks again!

    To wire a smart home, do I have to use 1.5mm, 2.5 mm installation cables together with network cables like cat 6 ?

    • @goingtobeapilot
      @goingtobeapilot  3 года назад

      Hello there. You don’t need to. Cat6 is able to pass small amounts of current for powering smaller devices and anything you can’t, you can typically plug into a wall outlet. I hope this helps!

    Are you using Cat6 for motorized blinds?

    • @goingtobeapilot
      @goingtobeapilot  2 года назад +1

      Yes they ran Cat6 for the blinds. I’m not entirely sure if that’s industry standard or a shortcut though lol

      @@goingtobeapilot how much was the blinds cable run?
      My first build is almost identical to your low voltage runs. I’m mapping out my 2nd build and planning to go with Lutron Serena blinds.
      Very thorough and nice job! The conduit is huge, especially to the attic! I was able to pack about 12 cat6 in my conduit runs. And conduit allows for future improvements. Such as fiber when it becomes more DIY.

    What would you do if the house already has sheet wall and u needed to wire the house

    • @goingtobeapilot
      @goingtobeapilot  3 года назад

      If you have a crawl space you could probably run wires pretty easy. If you don’t, you can cut small squares out of the drywall and pass the wires through. It would be a good bit of drywall patching but honestly it might be worth it. All depends on the details I guess.

    a tech told me it was going to be $4k for 6 outlets having coaxial and cat6. wonder if that's ok 🤔

    • @goingtobeapilot
      @goingtobeapilot  3 года назад

      I know sometimes there is a base cost that covers running lines from the outside to your low voltage panel and possibly a few other things. Did they give you a breakdown of the $4k? Sounds like a lot!

  • @carlosgarcialalicata
    @carlosgarcialalicata 3 года назад

    If a wire get's broken, how do you replace it? Here construction is totally different. for instance we are not allowed to run wires outside an electric pipe.

    • @goingtobeapilot
      @goingtobeapilot  3 года назад +1

      To be honest...I wondered the same thing. I assume they’d either have to rip up the drywall and run a new line or they’d just refund the money for that wire and say sorry. Seems less than efficient but I’m guessing it must mean it doesn’t happen too often. Just my guess 🤷🏼‍♂️

    $74 dollars a cable huh? Mine is $220 dollars per cable. You have it good. Or I have it rough.

    • @goingtobeapilot
      @goingtobeapilot  3 года назад +1

      Wow! I've heard $74 was really good but $220 seems really high. If you ran 25 wires it would be $5.5k and that's before layering any of the actual electronics on top. Thanks for that feedback...I guess that's why they say the grass isn't always greener 🙂I hope your house turns out great- thanks for watching and commenting.
