Actually, there wasn't a compound on the express. The Wikipedia article about the Hawes Junction rail crash has the type of engines involved listed. I found more details with some research. The express was a pair of engines, a Kirtley 2-4-0 and the other a Johnson Class 2 4-4-0, 48 and 549. The light engines were also Johnson Class 2 4-4-0s, 448 and 548. 448 was from Johnson's 2203 Class 548 and 549 were from Johnson's 60 Class No clue what the exact class of the 2-4-0 was, Kirtley 2-4-0 does little to narrow it down and I couldn't find any info on any with the number of 48.

I just realized in spite of the song saying from the man who condemns it's putting blame on the guy who has no control over the idiots who are driving the engines The engineer is at fault for this because he would have known the timetable and therefore he would know that an express train would be barreling down any minute and will not do the foolish maneuver of bringing 2 slow shunting engines onto the main line

In addition, the crew of the express were late, so the timetable was out of the picture in terms of knowing what time the express were arriving. We must remember that this was 1910, so now means of calculating how late a service was efficiently. However I do see your point. As much as the crews were at fault, the signalman was too.

Basically both the 'bobby' (signalman) and the light engine crews were to blame - the light engines for forgetting to go and remind the signalman they were there, and the latter for forgetting about them. Long duty hours, heavy Christmas Eve traffic, extra light engine movements and, importantly no 'collars' on his levers to remind him the engines were there. Of the men involved, the signalman was the most culpable and, to his credit, never shirked from admitting his mistake or blaming others. (Go, tell the stationmaster, I am afraid I have wrecked the Scots Express.) Its very easy for those of us who weren't there, living the moments, to make judgements........
The express in question was over 15 minutes behind schedule, and the light engines had been expecting a go-ahead for 20 minutes. In the accident investigation the blame was laid with both the signalman and the engineers of the light engines as the signalman should have been aware of their presence and they should have alerted him to it after waiting for such a long time. That being said the characterization of them being condemned is still inaccurate anyway as both of the engineers in the light engines survived, one of them was blown clear from the wreckage and limped over a mile to the next signal box to call for help.

Two expresses, following one another down the line; the first stalled, shy of steam because of the lousy coal and no one thought to go back with detonators. The following train was also struggling with poor coal and a defective injector - driver and his mate distracted, and pitched straight into the first one, followed by a fire. @@SSR_YT-lil
