This song was a #1 hit for Del Shannon in 1961. Then it became a hit all over again in 1987 when it was used as the theme song for the TV show "Crime Story." It also revitalized Del Shannon's career at the time.

My favorite song (came out about 1961 when I was 14 years old)! It obviously hit the radio stations and was played a number of years after that. Same goes for jukeboxes. The darned song never seemed to get old because people kept playing it, even though the British Invasion had started, along with popular American music coming out of Motown, and songs from the Beach Boys, The Four Seasons, and the Righteous Brothers to name but a few!

"Runaway" is Del Shannon's biggest hit from 1961 but he had a lot more great songs such as "Hats Off To Larry", "Little Town Flirt", "From Me To You", "Two Kinds Of Teardrops", "Keep Searchin'", "Stranger In Town" etc.

Listening to this great song since 61, really dug it then, sure feel the same now. Was soooooo popular it was selling 80,000 copies a day for a few weeks. Actually a Musitron early creation of the synthesizer was used for this song to create those groovy sounds. I also enjoy seeing so many having so much fun there.

Thanks for the reply. I was in the mist of referring another song to some other reactionaries like you, But since you always hit the like button on my comments I am going to refer to you because I think you are most genuine. Check out an artist called Buddy Guy a leader in the blues, even owns his own bar in Chicago. The song I really enjoy by him is called "Feels Like Rain". His studio album reflects his real strong suits of signing and playing the guitar. He can really bend the chords. He has other recording live with for viewing, check him out with a young John Mayer If you like this song he has plenty more to offer including music with Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck & Keith Richards, Santana and so on. The show was "Crime Story" back in the 80s and the show was a cop show set in the early 60s when this song came out. Del actually re-recorded it for the opening credits of the show. This video was from a TV show with Go-Go dancers and other great things about the 60s!

This song got a mention from Tom Petty's song,
    "Running' Down A Dream".
Lyrics : " Me And Del Were Singing, Little Runaway, I Was Flyin' ".

Guy her plays the synthesizer solo during the song actually invented that instrument, unique to its time.

Listening to this cool song close to 60 years never got tired of it. Love it! Actually a special instrument was created to produce that far out groovy sound. It's true! The 60s were full of great upbeat songs. My favorite decade.

This video was shot many years after the record came out in '61. It doesn't remind me of any movie or whatever...just its day and my time in the sun.

I'm just finding your channel, but I wonder if you've reacted to Jerry Lee Lewis. I suspect you'd enjoy his music. I'd strongly suggest a live recording of him. Possibly "Whole Lotta Shakin" or "Great Balls of Fire". So many of the songs from the 50s and 60s have later been added to movie sound tracks but they were hits first.
