Nice and helpful video for us do it yourself mechanics.
awesome, that was the goal
I’m about to do this same job on my V70R and this video was excellent
Wow! So nice to have a narrator and mechanics helping out. Great information. So, that darn collar is what kills the rear drive. Time to take on the job now!
glad we could help get ready for anything, you got it!
Brilliant video guys just brilliant as my 2004 V70 D5 wagon Big Helga will get this done soon as a bit of pampering to keep her sweet.
yea buddy best thing to do before it gets too bad.
That drive shaft joint deffo looks like it could use a service haha
Looks like having the exhaust out of the way made it much easier!
for sure, it clears up a lot of room to work around it
Great explanation
Ive taken my control arm many times and used the hole once but an easier way is take a chain wrap it around the control arm, take a longer pry bar stick it through the chain underneath the arm and prey down, insane leverage and only way i can do it by myself
thats a really good idea thanks for that!
I used a blind hole/ pilot bearing kind of puller to rather easily pop that splined shaft out. I bought a set off of Amazon and it contained 8 sizes and it took size 7, and included a cute slide hammer that did the job. Inserting the new one back in takes some hammer tapping until you hear the sound change. This is something I didn't see covered. But great vid though!
yea there are plenty of ways to get the job done, figured putting the collar back in was pretty self explanatory
Good job, thanks for showing me!😂
no problem
Man, this sheds so much light on the angle gear for me. I've got a 04 s60r that's leaking from I'm guessing the trans seal since its leaking between the trans and angle gear the best I can tell. Thanks for posting this!
yea man no problem, id replace all the seals in there so you don't have to worry about anything leaking later
@@salvobrothers5928 Sounds like a plan. Just gotta figure out which ones I need to order and hope I can borrow a friends lift to do it!
@@4LitreJeeper yea heard that!
Probably leaking from the oil return tube on the turbo. Very common. The angle gear has to come out to fix...total PITA. Removing that big thing to change $10 of gaskets & seals on a turbo return tube. Thanks Volvo engineers!
@@stevemccooleq the angle gear does not have to come out to replace the turbo drain seal.
Love that you guys are only 30 mins from me 👀
Nice video! how many hours did this job take you? I've been putting it off for years but the wife's XC90 doesn't have 4x4 and it would be nice to have it. I am worried at this point if we fix the front collar, is anything wrong with the Haldex unit in the back.... I've seen issues with the electronics and that's costly to replace.
it took about 3-4 hours, haldex is not as common to go bad, wouldnt hurt checking the fluid though
Nice video,
So if I understand correctly for the automatic the bolts will be on the left side? And do you know by any chance what exact fluid you used for the transmission and also the angle gear? Thanks mate!
its been a while i know we covered the fluids we used in the video not sure about where the bolts are coming in for an auto and all that
Great work 👍
thnx dude
Thanks for the video, very helpful! Do you know the size of the socket you used inside the collar sleeve against the puller?
sorry i dont remember that
Thanks for the video - really good detail. Can you tell me why the right hand axle has to come out, is it just for access or does it actually drive off the transfer box you are removing?
you cant take the angle gear without removing the axle first it all bolts together
Great video.. thanks
glad we could help
Do you have any videos on how to rebuild the angle gear itself? My angle gear is leaving like a sieve and there’s no way I can afford a shoppe to do the work for me.
unfortunately we don't have a video for that
How did you diagnose this issue? What noise does it make, or sensation?
Thank you, you guys are great.,
if it gets bad enough you wont have any power to the rear wheels
@@salvobrothers5928 I’m looking to buy one that already has no power to the rear wheels how much of a hassle is replacing that vs this cause you said you don’t want it to bust
@@nicksenter1275 your gonna end up replacing the whole rear diff or rebuilding it. why buy a car where this doesn't work?
@@salvobrothers5928 it’s $1900 and runs like a beauty besides that I just didn’t know how much of a hassle it was
@@nicksenter1275 thats cheap, if thats the only problem with it id say thats a good deal.
Great video, I have my collar off. Is that green o ring vehicle specific? I have an 04 xc70 and mine does not have one...
it could be i don't know the specifics for different vehicles
Amazing video! I’m assuming the exhaust has to come out…
yea it definitely does
What’s the best way to figure out why your awd isn’t working In these?
I need to do the turbo drain gasket on my v70r. Might have to pull the angle gear to do it. Thoughts?
it definitely would make it easier not entirely sure about access otherwise, ill have to ask nate
Some say you can reach from a small space to the L of the angle gear. I can't see how. Total PITA to remove that angle in order to replace $10 of gasket & seal. Not Volvo's finest engineering moment.
thats quite a good video.
Thnx my friend
A blind hole puller is the tool for this job, has it pulled out in seconds no need to cut or grind
thanks for the info ill have to check it out
ive removed one by hand ive had another removed by heat and a 5tonne puller. Im currently having issues with the AG leaking from everywhere.
yea were having that same problem
I have a question about the differential (Angle gear), do you have remove 100cc of fluid(Front) and 50cc (Rear) when you fill it to the top of the fill plug? I have a 2005 XC90 AWD, I just serviced both differentials and Haladex drive unit(I removed 40cc of AOC fluid after I filled it up) at 156000 miles. (Yes, they were all very dirty Lol)
no, the drain plug hole acts as a fill level. once the fluid is full enough to come out the plug hole its full
@@salvobrothers5928 Thanks for answering my question, I enjoyed your videos about the Volvo you both were working on. 😁👍
@@Djwally13 awesome glad were valuable to you! Thanks for the comment!
@@salvobrothers5928 What oil did you use? The volvo ones costs 44 euro per liter, is it a simple GL5 75W90?
You sure the fill was correct ? Seems like the trans and angle gear both take different fluid. Unless it wasn't videod that you filled them separately??
we got both fluids and definitely filled them separately i swear we covered it but if not i apologize
Please do a Haldex service, filter change and pump clean.
funny you sat that, we recorded it already, we just have to edit it soo stay tuned
@@salvobrothers5928 Awesome i hope you have the haldex gen2. I have a V70 2,5T AWD 2004 that needs a service soon.
@@ChristianGrau92 Nate would know more but i believe they are the same one
I hear a humming sound from the rear of my 2002 v70 xc. It increases with speed. At 60 mph I can not hear my engine. What do you say it is?
I have 271,000miles on my 2002 v70 xc
Any update on how long this lasted?
What were the symptoms of the bad angle gear and
Thank you
we didn't have symptoms on this car. We were doing it for preventative maintenance.
@@salvobrothers5928 that seems like a great idea. Thank you again!
@@alekjuskevice you got it!
if you still have power to the back wheels it could make a clunking and banging noise against the splines
@@salvobrothers5928 thank you
wonder if everyone agrees that a weak CV axle is what puts pressure on the seal it faces on that set-up that is or touches the angle gear/shaft/whatnot: thus, early change-outs of CV axle is imperative to prevent both this Collar damage/and-or more damage
Does the bad sleeve cause it to virbate
yes it can but not always
How did you know it was broken?
it wasn't presenting any issues yet, we suspected that it was starting to be an issue since they are very common. the symptom is usually bucking in between gear changes or taking off
Man I need help can you fix my 2005 volvo xc70?
of course we can
I was under the impression I had to replace my angle gear, not just the collar. Am I mistaken? How can I tell if it is just a stripped collar?
its way more common for the collar to strip, if you didn't hear an nasty gear whining before it stopped working then its the collar.
Good to know!!
Subbed!!
Thanks guys :-)
Glad we can help
@@salvobrothers5928 Just picked up my 05 XC70, as I tackle all the things the PO neglected I'm loving the car more and more. I hope to swap in a manual down the road when the automatic decides it's had enough. Looking forward to seeing what you all do along the way :-)
@@geekytechycool awesome dude a manual swap would be fun in that car.
