i have enjoyed quite a few different recordings of this concerto, but this very recording has by far the **best and greatest cadenza**, period. what an amazing work!
Sud-America.
Absolutely Great piece. Usually, we have PRIMITIVE RYTHMS IN CLASSICAL MUSIC, but HERE, in this piece, RYTHMS is like MUSICAL LANGUAGE. DRUMS SOUNDS LIKE ANY OTHERS INSTRUMENTS IN ORCHESTRA. Drum Music!
I was really "won" during the slow movement, in spite of some asynchrone beats that I could not understand. This music is really suited to a Spanish orchestra too... Regards from France,
Wonderful!!! Well observed by some people from here, for me it's also the first time that I saw the percussion in the front line, and the first time also that a concert was wrote to drums. Genius, the author and the instrumentists!
I agree. The only we have to do is to download it, in full analysis (HD), and see it in a big screen (more than 42''), with a good set of loadspeakers.
There are 12 timpani on that stage at one time. Insane. Granted they aren’t playing 4 of them at all... but that’s probably over $100k worth of drums in one place. Nothing compared to one violin I guess... but a lot for drums.
the strange thing about timpani is that yes they have a definite pitch, but that pitch becomes much less defined the further away from it you get, like most drums. So you end up just hearing the percussive wash of them, especially in louder parts. The solution is to mic them closely, which is how you get the full tonality, but they don't like doing that.
Very impressive indeed!. Notice the unoccupied standard set of Timpani at the percussion section. But if you want dramatic variations of different pitches you need more drums and also need to tune as you are playing like at 3:27.
There is only one thing worse than a concerto for timpanist and orchestra--a concerto for two timpanists and orchestra. Lucky for us the mayhem is handled brilliantly by, maybe, the greatest composer who ever lived. I am sure I would have enjoyed this piece more if I weren't 79 years old and have taught music theory and composition for 56 years at a major institute of higher learning. In 1966, when I was 25, I replaced the mufflers on my Mustang GT so it would make more noise when I floored it. This music kinda reminds me of my misspent youth.
A great performance, but young viewers should realize that heavily compressed audio do little justice to any orchestra. Streaming chews up half of the tones. What I mean is: buy the goddam CD ("The Concerto Project Vol. I" by Philip Glass, Orange Mountain Music), use a decent stereo (a well-balanced headphone if you're broke) and you'll be able to enjoy music as it's meant to.
Small disrupt of overall timing a little after 6:00. It seems the soloists were late at a certain point near 06'11''. Well, actually, it seems both soloists and different parts of the orchestra go slightly off beat at many times.
It is just the way it was filmed. Sounds travels slower than sight so their movements look off from the sound but if you just listen to the audio they are not off at all. 😉
Beautifull cadenza, full of life! By the way, isn`t the Tarishen cadenza "pauken krieg" ?
Yes, timbale is the word we use in spanish for timpanis, the words timbal and timbales are to name the other latin american instrument used in cumbia/salsa, etc. Timbal Latino Timbales Latinos Cheers :)
back in the days, timbales players used real timpani with a cowbell attached on it and stuff like that, but it has been progressively flushed away for the smaller drums we know today, though the name stayed. And "timbale" comes from the arabic "tabl", not from latin
Saludos.
Latin timpanum is where we also get the spanish word for eardrum, tímpano, which is what those bad boys are going to destroy if you aren't careful with them.
As good as these musicians are the editing of this video is making the Timpani seem as though they are out of sync with the audio and it becomes quite frustrating to watch.
Although I liked this rendition fairy well I cannot help but notice that the "drummers" and the orchestra did not always work as one unit. Both have great moments but when they play together it fells a bit... off. I don't know if this is due to the instrumentalists, the conductor or even Glass himself, but it leaves me with a feeling that this could have been even better.
i have enjoyed quite a few different recordings of this concerto, but this very recording has by far the **best and greatest cadenza**, period. what an amazing work!
just one word "amazing"
very different than previous Glass works
finally percussion made front stage.thanks for that.
It just said, "That was amazing."
The Tempani just lookin' at the Violin like "Yeah, I'm in the front now.".
How much fun is it to listen this great piece of music that doesn't get played enough
Hard to believe this piece was written in 2000! It sounds so much like a late romantic/early modern piece.

Espectacular !
I have this on CD paired with the cello concerto. A great combination!
Philip Glass is the living exemplar of modern music---I couldn't believe it when I learned that Koyaniqaatsi was written in 1975...
Bravo, Javier!!! Saludos.

wow, great conductor
!
The 2nd soloist: "Ah easy sightreading."
The 1st soloist: "Fuck me!" *playing the lead melody on one timpani*
I agree. The only we have to do is to download it, in full analysis (HD), and see it in a big screen (more than 42''), with a good set of loadspeakers.
One of the best perfomance that I had never seen
Wow, this is amazingly beautiful.
Super 👍 🙂 👍
Fabuleux !

Lots of film scores have a substantial amount of close/spot mics dialed in for the timpani, as do many classical recordings (e.g. Solti's Mahler 3).
Drone and ambient would like to have a word with you.
MAGIC !!!
Muito bom mesmo..... Felicitaciones
wow. first time I've seen percussion up in front! The sound is way diffffferent.
Magnifique!!
Fantastique !

Playing this song is almost a mission impossible.

Tell us how you really feel, babe!
@@Zacattack9710 I wish Philip Glass would just stop pretending to be a real composer.
@@stephenjablonsky1941 Sorry, ain't happening :^)

Darn right, of course live perf is best :)
True, but it’s really nice to see the virtuosic performances of the 2 percussionists.

Guau!!!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
At last something that doesnt sound like the Illusionist! I really liked this.
fantastico
incredible
I'm confused. Is timbale just the Spanish word for timpani, which is an Italian word anyway? I thought a timbale was a different drum altogether!
Yes, timbale is the word we use in spanish for timpanis, the words timbal and timbales are to name the other latin american instrument used in cumbia/salsa, etc.
Timbal Latino

They have a common root. Latin: "timpanum" I believe

15:20 sounds a bit like MISSION IMPOSSIBLE!
At first this sounds like a different composer, can't believe I've never heard of this
