Question: First assume the following: plan to pursue a career in family medicine and both MD and DO school tuitions are the same. Option 1, go immediately to a DO school. Option 2, wait 1-2 years, fortify your application and go to an MD school. What is the right answer? After 15 years of clinical practice...drum roll...wait for it... DO. Why? 1 additional year of additional savings growing exponentially over a 30 year career. 50K 7% over 30 years= approx 410K. Personally, I'd take the cash at retirement over a 30 year career of perceived MD "status" any day. Dave Ramsey take home, in the end $ > status.

Definitely sharing this video with a close friend!! This was much needed!! I've been on a personal journey exploring these fields in depth b/c going into the medical field, whether it's PA, Nursing, OT, PT , etc., will be very expensive & is not a decision to take lightly! This is why I'm so extremely thankful that you broke down the issues of DO residencies! I'm a new pre-med (second bachelors/graduated in May '17) & had no idea this was happening!! I knew of the stigmas against DOs & personally I have no issues with DOs, PAs, or NPs. However, I was once strongly considering PA studies until researching more into the field & educational path. I love all the pros the career offer, but after talking to a PA I realized that some specialties are rare to find a PA work in (this is according to a practicing PA in neurosurgery btw!) such as pathology, clinical genetics, diagnostic Rad; although Interventional RAD is not as rare according to her. Of course there are ALOT of specialties that PAs can pursue!! It's just I have a strong interest in RAD (not based on monetary reasoning & it might change). However, I just don't want to limit my options for specialties. Also, the push for NPs to have a doctorate degree in 2020 or 2025 (it was supposed to be in 2018) now has PA schools (so far a few) considering advancing PA studies to a doctorate degree 😑. I'm aware that this is not too alarming as other fields, such as audiology was also once a master level & PT also, but my gut feeling is telling me that there are some cons to the PA field that no one is willing to talk about (similar to DO residency discussed on here) & I cannot take the risk (as a once Radiation therapist major). Sorry this was long 😬...just wanted to add to the discussion 😬

DO is NOT equivalent to PA or NP. It is EQUIVALENT TO MD. The stigma exists because of things like this. I am a DO and have had classmates go into ENT, Ortho, Derm and even one into Neurosurgery

My struggle is deciding between PA and MD. I love to help people, but I’m struggling in my decision by looking at the salaries and length of time in school and/or training. Time and money isn’t an issue as far as program costs, it’s just the end results I can’t seem to decide to choose between.
Devon Sewell I started off wanting to be an MD also. But all the politics of even getting into med school turned me off. I’m going with NP because you can still write scripts and be autonomous

I just got my RN and I'm 44...a healthy and fabulous 44 but I do not like debt so...lol...maybe not med school. I don't know. A few doctors have said don't bother with med school. Too much stress and debt. However I will watch the video to gain more insight.

The nurse practitioner scope of practice varies from state to state. They may be limited in some states, and must practice under a physician, while some states have much less restrictions. NP and PA are not the same. PA's will always have to work under a physician. NP's can have their own practice. As defined by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, "Nurse practitioners (NPs) are licensed, independent practitioners who practice in ambulatory, acute and long-term care as primary and/or specialty care providers. NPs assess, diagnose, treat and manage acute episodic and chronic illnesses. NPs are experts in health promotion and disease prevention. They order, conduct, supervise, and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests; prescribe pharmacological agents and non-pharmacologic therapies; and teach and counsel patients, among other services." NPs are NOT MDs but do not have to work under one.

This video made me so sad by hearing your opinion about Optometry. Optometrists don't just work with glasses! They can diagnose brain tumors and diabetes as well as detecting serious eye conditions. Your optometrist could prevent you from going blind! No love for the eyes or optometrists :(

Nope thats an optician. Opticians fit glasses, which you need only a certification to do. Optometrists are eye doctors that can diagnose ocular diseases, write scripts for eye drops, and get your eye glasses prescription (You get a D.O or Doctor of Optometry). Ophthalmologists (which is an M.D.) are specialized eye doctors that can perform surgery or treat some ocular diseases in more depth than an optometrist will. It's sad that people don't know a lot about optometry and therefore don't go into the field, because it's really interesting! Source: Applying to optometry school this year
Optometrists are O.D. just an fyi. But yes they are actually eye DOCTORS. The D.O. degree is doctor of osteopathic medicine, ie a medical doctor analogous to the M.D.

Anesthesia Assistant is only permitted to work in 16 states. So before going to school for that make sure the state your going to reside in allows you to work as a AA.

You will never work under a physician as a dentist, you're more or less equivalent. Even working under an OMFs, they cant tell you what to do unless a favor. Physicians hate dentists a bit, they feel dentists. They think optometry is above dentistry because they are lazy at checking out other courses. This guy is just making a weak point, there are proctologists/gynaecologists/ent. They are physicians also.
And he is talking about specialised professions like physicians do knee or heart surgery, also physicians get paid upfront and mainly do prescription. Doing 1st aid can screw you over though but insurance covers that. Specialists get paid later yes but you wont reach the hospital without a call and appointment and proper investigation. Physicians dont do knee surgery.Orthodontist are just a speciality like a podiatrist. In government hospitals all dental specialists get paid the same including maxfac. Optometry is not equivalent, they are like nurses and dental therapists.

I still have a couple more years left before I can apply to med school but I wanted to apply to DO schools because I agree with the DO way. Do you think that would be smart at all? Or should I stay away from DO?
This is not exactly correct. While there will be less DO residencies due to funding and cost to meet ACGME mandates, a large number of DO residencies have already gotten prelim accreditation. Will it be harder for DO's? Time will tell. But there definitely will be more competition since DO residencies can also accept MD. Also DO's are fully licensed in Canada, check the Canadian Osteopathic Association website
I am a nurse and I want to be a midwife, but I want to work with high risk pregnancies....to work with high risk pregnancies I need my MD as an OB GYN but midwives are involved more throughout the duration of the pregnancy.....I JUST CAN'T DECIDE🥺😓😭

Can you talk more on anesthesiology assistant (AA)? I know there are states that don't recognize them as healthcare professionals. Currently, there are only 18 states that do recognize them. Is it still worth it to go to AA school? I would really appreciate your professional opinion.
Great, but Dentists, Optometrists, and orthodontists are doctors too…. There’s a little bit of disrespect there. Optometrists aren’t only about glasses. They are the primary healthcare providers of the eyes. Some optometrists do surgeries just like ophthalmologists. An optometrist can catch a systemic disease just by looking into your eyes or the adnexa.
I have already applied to DO schools this year. And now I’m afraid of it’s outcome. However, I guess it is a topic of concern to bring up during interviews (if I get any) lol.
vanessa rosa haha. I would definitely bring it up. But, as with everything I say nothing is absolute. DO is fine, but you have to execute and perform in medical school to get the residency you want. If you go there and you have success, Residencies will want you
NPs can practice autonomously in some states though so we don’t have to work “under” a Doctor. I’m also aware that PAs and NPs also work in areas that Doctors don’t which are the rural parts.
I also think it’s more appropriate to say collaborate with or work alongside/with rather than “under” that leaves a negative connotation and is not necessarily the case
Smart & profitable Drs offices run prior auths all the time, Hospitals usually don’t. With Obama care we do have more people insured... reimbursements are a lot lower & rules on collecting out of pocket for this insured population are very strict.

Anesthesia assistant seems shady to me. Getting a masters in anesthesia and not having to have any clinical experience 🤔 can you please explain more about this? Because what’s the point of even doing CRNA when I could skip the nursing and make 6 figures off rip with being an assistant 🤔 I’m lost about this lol
a w Well the difference is that an AA can't practice on their own, must always be under the supervision of an MDA, whereas (depending on the state) a CRNA can practice independently and open up their own practice etc.
Very good video. Only time will tell how the md...do thing works out. There is definitely prejudice in the medical community. Right or wrong its true. I'm a do...very proud of my training and profession. The fact is...we are all on the same team. With the unbelievable growth of the do profession, the only opinion that matters is what the patients think. I enjoy working with my md colleagues...doesn't bother me at all. What does bother me is the brakes on my new Bentley GT convertible with 3,000 miles are making a strange noise. I have to drive my Ferrari 488 until I get it back to the dealer in Atlanta which is another pain in the ass. Peace my md brother and keep up the good work with the videos. What about gynaecologists and proctologists? I think it's worse than dentistry. That suicide thing physicians are at the top of the list followed by dentists. In terms of rank of qualification, Orthodontist are above physicians and dentists because they are a actual doctor specialist and the optometrist are like nurses and dental therapists but they earn more. I think they study more or less the same amount of medicine like dental therapists and nurses. If government clinics hire optometrists then please be one, it's less medicine and more pay.

Pharmacy is a mess. I am a pharmacy tech now and all my pharmacists tell me please do not go to pharmacy school. First off job market growth for them is 3% over the next tens on years because the market is so saturated with new grads. Also pharmacy school is just as hard as medical school. My ex coworker just finished pharmacy school and she regrets it so much she said she should’ve just went md or do. However she was lucky and smart enough to get a residency so she’ll be a clinical pharmacist which is a lot better than working retail. And trust me retail is a disgusting stressful place to be ..I can’t imagine that being my career smh

Hi can you please do a comparison of optometrist vs podiatrist vs pharmacist.
I’m so sick of people criticising dentists and dentistry ! And thinking that they work for physicians. You’re really making me hate what I’m doing
You will never work under a physician as a dentist, you're more or less equivalent. Even working under an OMFs, they cant tell you what to do unless a favor. Physicians hate dentists a bit, they feel dentists. They think optometry is above dentistry because they are lazy at checking out other courses. This guy is just making a weak point, there are proctologists/gynaecologists/ent. They are physicians also.
And he is talking about specialised professions like physicians do knee or heart surgery, also physicians get paid upfront and mainly do prescription. Doing 1st aid can screw you over though but insurance covers that. Specialists get paid later yes but you wont reach the hospital without a call and appointment and proper investigation. Physicians dont do knee surgery.Orthodontist are just a speciality like a podiatrist. In government hospitals all dental specialists get paid the same including maxfac. Optometry is not equivalent, they are like nurses and dental therapists.

Or should I stay away from DO?

This is not exactly correct. While there will be less DO residencies due to funding and cost to meet ACGME mandates, a large number of DO residencies have already gotten prelim accreditation. Will it be harder for DO's? Time will tell. But there definitely will be more competition since DO residencies can also accept MD. Also DO's are fully licensed in Canada, check the Canadian Osteopathic Association website

Can you talk more on anesthesiology assistant (AA)? I know there are states that don't recognize them as healthcare professionals. Currently, there are only 18 states that do recognize them. Is it still worth it to go to AA school? I would really appreciate your professional opinion.
Great, but Dentists, Optometrists, and orthodontists are doctors too…. There’s a little bit of disrespect there. Optometrists aren’t only about glasses. They are the primary healthcare providers of the eyes. Some optometrists do surgeries just like ophthalmologists. An optometrist can catch a systemic disease just by looking into your eyes or the adnexa.
I have already applied to DO schools this year. And now I’m afraid of it’s outcome. However, I guess it is a topic of concern to bring up during interviews (if I get any) lol.
vanessa rosa haha. I would definitely bring it up. But, as with everything I say nothing is absolute. DO is fine, but you have to execute and perform in medical school to get the residency you want. If you go there and you have success, Residencies will want you
Nothing to be afraid of, but you will have to out perform the MD students for residencies. You can get any residency but you just have to work harder

NPs can practice autonomously in some states though so we don’t have to work “under” a Doctor. I’m also aware that PAs and NPs also work in areas that Doctors don’t which are the rural parts.
I also think it’s more appropriate to say collaborate with or work alongside/with rather than “under” that leaves a negative connotation and is not necessarily the case
Smart & profitable Drs offices run prior auths all the time, Hospitals usually don’t. With Obama care we do have more people insured... reimbursements are a lot lower & rules on collecting out of pocket for this insured population are very strict.

Anesthesia assistant seems shady to me. Getting a masters in anesthesia and not having to have any clinical experience 🤔 can you please explain more about this? Because what’s the point of even doing CRNA when I could skip the nursing and make 6 figures off rip with being an assistant 🤔 I’m lost about this lol
a w Well the difference is that an AA can't practice on their own, must always be under the supervision of an MDA, whereas (depending on the state) a CRNA can practice independently and open up their own practice etc.

Very good video. Only time will tell how the md...do thing works out. There is definitely prejudice in the medical community. Right or wrong its true. I'm a do...very proud of my training and profession. The fact is...we are all on the same team. With the unbelievable growth of the do profession, the only opinion that matters is what the patients think. I enjoy working with my md colleagues...doesn't bother me at all. What does bother me is the brakes on my new Bentley GT convertible with 3,000 miles are making a strange noise. I have to drive my Ferrari 488 until I get it back to the dealer in Atlanta which is another pain in the ass. Peace my md brother and keep up the good work with the videos. Btw...if you are ever near Douglas Georgia stop by...lets have a cold beer.

What about gynaecologists and proctologists? I think it's worse than dentistry. That suicide thing physicians are at the top of the list followed by dentists. In terms of rank of qualification, Orthodontist are above physicians and dentists because they are a actual doctor specialist and the optometrist are like nurses and dental therapists but they earn more. I think they study more or less the same amount of medicine like dental therapists and nurses. If government clinics hire optometrists then please be one, it's less medicine and more pay.

Pharmacy is a mess. I am a pharmacy tech now and all my pharmacists tell me please do not go to pharmacy school. First off job market growth for them is 3% over the next tens on years because the market is so saturated with new grads. Also pharmacy school is just as hard as medical school. My ex coworker just finished pharmacy school and she regrets it so much she said she should’ve just went md or do. However she was lucky and smart enough to get a residency so she’ll be a clinical pharmacist which is a lot better than working retail. And trust me retail is a disgusting stressful place to be ..I can’t imagine that being my career smh

Your view of optometry is so tunneled. I would suggest looking more into the profession before "educating" others on it.
