Great videos ! Just to clarify... what your referring to as the "Loom", is actually called / cataloged as " Cover Slide" ( P-85 ) And referred to alot of times as a "Gut Plate Slide" or " Gut Frame Slide" on the P-83. *Bonus Drum Nerd Fact * 🥁🤓 ( Being the Drum Nerd that I am ) Lol... The P-85 actually has 6 variations, that include ( obviously ) the 12 hole and 2 hole Black Face - 2 different P-85 heights ( 1/2" & 7/8" with P-32 matching butt heights - P-85 B/F , 2 hole with solid, bottom clamp bracket - P-85 Siver Face with open, bottom clamp bracket 🥁🥁🥁
Well thank you for being a nerd friend. I actually never knew any of that and it is very useful information. A slide cover.... gotta remember that. Mine isnt bad either, dont you think? Cheers and be sure to comment often with more useful facts. Bruce
Subscribed and thumbs up Bruce. I love this channel !!!!!!!. I think the P-85 is supposed to have a spring to snug up the tension rod, but it doesn’t work anyway so to heck with it…..Mine always loosened up spring or no spring.
its one of the best throws around. Funny, but someone commented that it was one of the worst ever made and that I should toss them all in the rubbish. I did not comment to him. I mean what is there to say? Whatever dude. haha
@@vintagedrumrestorationgara91 whats not to like? I’m not technical at all when it comes to hardware but to me they’re so well engineered. They’re simple enough for me understand mechanically and they do exactly what they’re supposed to do.
Thank you for the great video! I have a P-338 strainer from a 1920's Ludwig snare that is missing the rivet that connects the part with the knob to the part with the handle. It's a little similar to this. Do you know where to get those rivets please? I wonder if it's the same size as with these newer strainers. Thanks a lot!
Send me a pic of the rivet you are trying to find. I need a pic of the throw off that you are trying to repair. I may have a solution or not? budsmusic@hotmail.com
The throw off handle on the p85 looks a little longer than the p83. I have a old WFL snare drum with the p83. It needs the correct throw off handle. Mine is straight and doesn't have a bend in it to accommodate the head hoop sticking out into it. My drum is 5.5" tall and I think maybe someone swapped a strainer from a 6.5" tall drum, maybe? However I need to buy just a handle and i would give this one in return, as well. Any recommendations on a good source for one? I need it because it is binding badly from having gotten bent over the years from that poor clearance of the head hoop
Thank you for this video! I've been wanting to know exactly what kind of brass wheel you use and where to get one. I've got a big refurb project on a '68 Gretsch kit with all the hardware needing attention. This helps a lot. Thanks Bruce!
@@vintagedrumrestorationgara91 Hey Bruce, having a really hard time finding a brass wheel with a 1/2" arbor for my bench buffer. The only wheels I can find with fine enough filaments (.003), like the ones in the links you show in the video, have 1/4" arbors. Can you tell me where exactly you got yours? Obviously they exist. But I've been googling for hours and can't find them! Help? (Thanks!)
@@Habbedasher I found mine on Ebay years ago by someone who had a box of them so I bought what he had. I did some research and that is what I came up with. I would call those two companies and speak with a rep. Bruce
@@vintagedrumrestorationgara91 Thanks. I did call them both actually, and even bought one with the 1/4" arbor by mistake. But neither place had any leads for where else to look for one. Finding them on ebay makes sense. A couple of hours searching hasn't yielded anything. But they do exist! I'll find one at some point. Keep up the great videos! I'm telling my drummer friends about your channel.
Like to get your opinion. I just got an Acrolite snare with a date code of November 4th 1069. The throw off looks like P83 but has no Ludwig Logo on on the plate and does not have any offset in the handle. Why is this so different from the P83 you show?
No offset? Is it a 6.5" tall drum? My old WFL is 5.5" tall and the handle is straight. It does not allow clearance for the drum head retaining hoop and binds badly when I use it. I think maybe somebody put the wrong handle on there in the past.
Are you good at straightening metal? do you have a vice? Put the threaded portion in the vice only up to the bend but do not tighten it too much. Tap it till it is straight. Try bending an ordinary nail and then bending it back into shape for practice. Report back on progress. Bruce
My accent throw off on the vice it would get wedge on the bottom so I bought some gorilla glue and put a washer and glued it with my 4” c clamp and left it overnight hopefully it works
The big difference between the P83 and the P85 is that the front piece on the P85 is made of chromed pot metal while the P83 is all steel. On my pre-serial badged Jazz Festival - see ruclips.net/video/mt6O2IdKXZA/видео.htmlsi=TbRX12PBmHGYaJ7I - I have an early P83 with the letters “WFL” inside a keystone shape rather than the “Ludwig” in script. I have a script-lettered P83 on another drum and a later P83 with “ludwig” in the modern letters. I of course also have a pot metal P85 on a mid-70’s Acrolite, too. The black face on that P85 slide is actually a sticker, not black enamel. I wish it were enamel but it isn’t, and if anyone has proof positive that any of those blackface P85’s were black enamel, please reply.
You have all of those in one place, this is the perfect time to grab a big trashcan and throw them in it. Slumwig should have done something about that pos throw off decades ago.
This video helps a lot. The little things that need to be fixed.
Thanks Ralph, thats what this channel is all about. Tell your drum buddies about it and let grow this channel. Cheers, Bruce
Just got a 1966 Acrolite that was a little beat up and this video saved me from buying a new throw off! Just subscribed, you’re the man!
Nice collection of Ludwig strainers! My favorite strainer of all time. ❤
Love my P-83 on my '69 supra. The older I get, the more I like simplicity. Single brace Atlas stands too!
I totally agree!
