We are still in the "use what works" phase of our careers. Wooden dowels duct taped to the top of a 5 gallon bucket for uncapping. I love the diy/hillbilly approach to beekeeping. Great video.
I have been in that phase for many years myself. lol Nothing wrong with using what works until the bee products can buy better more efficient equipment. Thanks for watching!
Built version 02 and it works great, thanks. Big money saver. Hey saw an uncapping video that uses a Harbor Freight type heat gun to uncap frames....unbelievable time saver.,....no muss no fuss, uncaps a frame in less than a minute. No tools required.
TY, Jason! Just another proof that you don’t need a Cadillac to drive around town. Sometimes i dont feel like getting all the big equipment out and making an even bigger mess, so i made a drain box like this one, except the larger box is on the top. I scratch open the cappings, put the frames upside down into the box and let all the honey drain out into the lower box. Yes, pretty lazy, but still puts a few more quarts of honey on the pantry shelf. 😃 !
wow thank you so much I am approaching my first harvest and I am sending video to my husband to see if we can build. Second version seems really flexible for working conditions!Bravo
Hey Jason, I am very pleased that you are showing things a backyard beekeeper can make rather than spending big bucks to get useful items from the big companies. I like DIY. Thanks man. Rick in Pa.
I’m a newbee! I really like your second version after extracting my first frames without such a system. My cappings are draining in my strainer now. Thanks for sharing.
both because they can be progressive. In that like you did start off with really simple and then build a fancy one once you have established you priorities in a decap tank. For me I'm thinking a combo that includes a bucket and paint strainer sac hung over the bucket to drain and then later squeeze and then leave out for bees to clean and last to run through the washing machine. The bucket decap shelf and the tool to hold one bucket to drain into another and tightly seal until a substantial amount of honey has been amassed. As plans go to have only 12 - 15 nests I may decap and extract by the frame rather than by the super.
I think the new uncapping unit is excellent in its design and frugality. Good job. Obviously, your experience and innovation has come to a practical expression of your expertise.
You got 1 or 2 plastic queen excluders in the top ben??seems that 1 would let capping fall through to much..I made some like this about 10 years ago used clear sterlite from wally but put hardwire cloth 2 layers in cross pattern works fine but about half full it gets flimsy and never did like the ideal of hardwire and you can imagine clean up…
Yes, I knew I needed to point that out. I think these totes can be fine if they are used and cleaned all in the same day but I would not store honey in them. I make sure my buckets are always BPA free.
I think this is one of the reasons that you , and Barn Yard Bees are my top Go To , You Tube Video makers for honey Bees ! - The 02 looks nice , but the 01 would do fine also . I'm working on summer #6 as a hobby Bee Keeper , and ALL of my equipment is home made ! , Hive bodies , frames , covers , ect. .
Good stuff. I just made a honey bucket using the same gate. By far it's better than anything else available. The way the is preice threads into the outer gate instead of using a nut type system insures there will be know leaks.
I guess I have been on a roll between this top secret video and my Goldenrod post on Facebook. lol Couldn't sleep Bill? It's says you watched this video around 1 am. So you either couldn't sleep or your a night owl.....Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Great instructional video Jason. I, too, could not see myself spending over $100 for a capping tank so I made one this season as well. I've not made a video on it though. I was having trouble think of the "screen" portion and I really like the idea of the refrig shelf and the excluder. I wound up using #8 screen and about a dozen SS machine screws with a washer and nut to hold it in place. I think your idea was easier and cheaper! I always enjoy your videos.
I like working with my hands so when I get the chance to make something, I'm all for it and when it saves money it's even better. Sometime I use Google images to get idea for parts when I am build something. For instance, I got this uncapping tank idea from there years ago and from there started looking for the parts. Thanks for being a fan of the video, much appreciated!
Hi Jason, first year bee keeper and I've learned a lot from your videos, thanks! Quick question on the totes, what size are they? What do you recommend?
Hey man, came across this video as I am planning on making a few bits to use alongside my own bees, picked up all the bits needed for less than £20 and thanks to you got an idea of what to do. Cheers :)
I like the 2nd one since it is similar to the $175.00 set from Mann Lake! Just curious, is the stainless panel for strength, or just some bling? 🤑😊 Thanks for the video
For PVC to go through a container (including 55gl type) I use a rubber grommet sold by Grainger web site. Specs are available for each size. I use them for an Aquaponic system so they are water tight.
Very true, they are a little challenging to figure out. I used a piece of furring strip. I stuck it inside the back to keep it from turning. I should make a video explain how I did it. Do you like the gate? I think they are very well made.
Jason Chrisman yes, very nice. I used a 7/8" (if my memory is correct) bolt and nut with a short piece of pipe on the bolt. Put the head of the bolt in the fitting and turned it with a crescent wrench on the nut inside my bucket. For anyone with a 3d printer, there's a wrench on Thingiverse.
William, I have never heard of that site until now or seen a wrench for those gates. That's awesome! I will have to do some research and see what it would cost to have one made. I like how this honey gate makes the user get creative to get it tight. I never thought to see if a bolt would fit but I don't stock anything that big either, good idea though! Thanks for sharing the site.
William, I reached out to my friend with the 3D printer and he checked the website for the specs. It takes 4 hours to print the wrench and the cost is about $.50, so he made me one. He is shipping it to me and I can't wait to see it. Now I am looking into 3D printers. lol
I got the grey one's from Lowe's but Wal-Mart carries them also. Lowe's actually carries a tote made by "Brute" that is super heavy duty but the cost is more than standard totes.
The honey super frames are smaller so we don't have to carry boxes that weigh 100 pounds. I've used full deep frames as a honey super a few times and it's no fun to carry very far.
Anything with the word ‘Bee’ in the title of the product = Add 170% to the price lol. Made my own too, ridiculous world we live in, piece of plastic costing that much 🙄 just because it’s bee related.
The hobby industry is greedy. It always has been expensive. In college we joked about what we'd like to engineer. I always said "sporting goods" because they're overpriced as well. Look at some top of the line golf clubs or an Italian shotgun for example.
Thanks Jason, some good ideas which I'll use.

I love it. The refrigerator shelf sold me on how easy it would be to make one of these.
Best of luck!
And the term refrigerator shelf is one I use often. In fact a ref. grate on the beach over an open fire way to cook on big beach fire.
Thanks Jason. I've been mentally designing this exact setup for about a week. Glad to see someone has actually done it and shown a proof of concept.
Love the split top cover!
Thanks! This uncapping tank has worked well for me.

Love it JC. 4:38 "This is top secret stuff here folks"
Awesome. Thanks , just the info I was looking for.

I've always been one to make something I need over buying if possible. Keeps the mind sharp that way! Glad you enjoy it also.
Like your second one.will have to try it out thank you
Myself I prefer the first one. It's more on the cheap. Plus everything to make it I already have. Great job J.C. thumbs up from KY
I like the #2 model you made. Pretty slick.
I liked the first tank best. I have only a few hives so that tank would be perfect for me. Thanks for the great idea.
I’m a newbee! I really like your second version after extracting my first frames without such a system. My cappings are draining in my strainer now. Thanks for sharing.

Nice, Real Nice. Thanks
Thanks for listening

Dude this is awesome.
Glad you liked it!
Brilliant!
Väldigt bra tips
Excellent Video very informative
I like the simplicity of the first one....I am more likely abel to build that by myself and it looks like it works just fine! Thank you for the idea!
Yes, it was easy to make and it did work very well for years. Thanks for watching!

Where did you buy the totes at for the new model JC Model 02? Can't seem to find them anywhere. Thanks
I like it! Glad you mentioned not to store honey in those tubs (BPA).

The second one .thanks for sharing. Enjoy your you tube.
Thanks!
Can't wait to make one for ourselves, cause that'll mean we made bonus honey :)
Thanks for the videos.
A good idea, Will have to try that out. look forward to seeing your bottling tank.
I'm anxious to try the newest tank and see how it works. I'm sure you will see it in my extracting video coming soon.
Great job, learn a lot from you. I enjoy all your videos, keep up the great work
2nd one is a great improvement. Thanks for sharing this!!
Good stuff. I just made a honey bucket using the same gate. By far it's better than anything else available. The way the is preice threads into the outer gate instead of using a nut type system insures there will be know leaks.
I love that honey gate! I just recently had a friend use his 3d printer to make me a wrench to fit it. Very handy tool to have.
Top Secret Stuff... you kill me! Keep making you videos, great information!

@@JCsBees I like the 2nd version. I want to build it. But I'm not sure what size totes you used?
Thank you for sharing very useful info J. Now making my own one. Harvesting pretty soon. Later
I like the #2 tank and I will try to find the totes to make one of those instead of paying close to $100. for one.
Go to Lowe's
Hi Jason, first year bee keeper and I've learned a lot from your videos, thanks! Quick question on the totes, what size are they? What do you recommend?
Where did you find 2 totes alike with one shorter than the other?
Lowe's
Jason, what brand are the totes you used for the later model?
Not sure of the brand but they were purchased at Lowe's.
always enjoy your videos
Thanks
Great video Jason!
Hello Jason Peter from Australia , model 2 is much better , will be building one soon , enjoy your videos clear and easy to understand ☺
I agree! I love the 2nd model myself too. Glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks for watching!
👍👍 the second one.
You Rock!! I like how you make everything. Thank you for all your hard work.
Well thanks! Are you making one? I am using mine now and it's working very well.
Hey man, came across this video as I am planning on making a few bits to use alongside my own bees, picked up all the bits needed for less than £20 and thanks to you got an idea of what to do. Cheers :)
Awesome! Glad the video was handy.
Look great . Where did the gray tote come from. I like the gray one the best . Thanks for all your video’s.
It was from Lowe's.
Thanks , I think that set up would work great for me. Keep up the video’s. 🐝
I like the 2nd one since it is similar to the $175.00 set from Mann Lake! Just curious, is the stainless panel for strength, or just some bling? 🤑😊
Thanks for the video
The stainless is just for bling. lol
Hey Jason. I'm glad you're back on board.
Where'd you get your bins?
Thanks. The bins are from Lowe's.
Second one for sure
Is that food grade?
What are the sizes of the tubs from tank #2?
No . 2
For PVC to go through a container (including 55gl type) I use a rubber grommet sold by Grainger web site. Specs are available for each size. I use them for an Aquaponic system so they are water tight.
Awesome! Would you have a link to one of them so I could see what your describing? Thanks for sharing
I'll get the package and re: the part # from Grainger
Grainger part # 3LEU5
They are available in different sizes
www.grainger.com/product/FIMCO-Rubber-Grommet-3LEU5?searchBar=true&searchQuery=3LEU5
I have been asking my husband to make me one. I think after I show him this he will give it a try,
Cool, it's fairly easy to make. You only need a few tool to make them.
Where did you get tubs for 2nd version? I can't find a shallow tub that fits inside of deep tub.
Thanks!
Hey Danny, I got them from Lowe's.
What is the size of 2 totes you use ?
Bought 1 of those gates last year. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to tighten it beings I don't have a hex wrench that big at home 🤠
Very true, they are a little challenging to figure out. I used a piece of furring strip. I stuck it inside the back to keep it from turning. I should make a video explain how I did it. Do you like the gate? I think they are very well made.

I used two totes from Sam's (like you would use to bus Tables) and a honey gate. Less than $20.00.
Great video
Where did you get the tubs
I got the grey one's from Lowe's but Wal-Mart carries them also. Lowe's actually carries a tote made by "Brute" that is super heavy duty but the cost is more than standard totes.
Where is the uncapping demo video supposedly at the end of the vid ????
#2 would be perfect if it had a small coffee maker attached to it somewhere (maybe the side). 😁
would the 2nd one but if cost is a factor then improvise
Nice design, mind if I steal it?
It's not stealing if I am sharing it with you as a suggestion. Go for it!
@@JCsBees thank you
Is there any reason Americans like to use these little half size frames instead of full depth ones?
The honey super frames are smaller so we don't have to carry boxes that weigh 100 pounds. I've used full deep frames as a honey super a few times and it's no fun to carry very far.
second one also.
I’ll build jc2
Why would you go to all that trouble but not use food-safe plastic?

Mike Ries great shame as many can’t even afford a hobby lol. If a poly-hive was called a fridge cooler it would be £20 😂.
Mine cost $175.00 Canadian and its plastic
