      @@Danny-or4gw there’s no step guide to “read” the defense that will always work, easiest way is just to play and use instincts(and i think most nba players do the same thing)

      @@isakmaaan0326 agree, to learn how to "read" the defense you must play vs defense and build up from there to see what works and what not. And there are plenty of "reading" situations in the game, i.e off-ball reads are very important too (where is the open space, moving in relation to the ballhandler and my teammates, relocations, is my defender ball watching (see back of the head) and can i cut to the basket because of that (is the lane open or crowded?) and so on. But broke down to the basic nature, it's often a question of can i do X in situation Y: YES or NO? See drew hanlen approach to this "questions" on Ball Screen Drop Coverages: ruclips.net/video/KffXxPCJWk8/видео.html
      This helps in my opinion and experience to simplify the complex nature of real game situations.
      For example if you catch the ball, your first question (and mentality) should be can i shoot the ball? If the answer is YES - shoot the ball (if you are in range, open and on balance), if NO your next question could be can i drive and attack the basket? if YES - drive, if NO your next question could be can i pass the ball, if YES - pass the ball, if NO your next question could be, can i create an better passing or driving angle by ie. using a retreat dribble or any kind of pressure release move? If YES - then create an better angle, if NO...hmm then, you might be in serious trouble :D Just kidding, you see there the journey is going.

    At 3:43 Lebron catches in the air and lands first on one foot before going into the 1-2. Is this allowed?

    You should use this footwork when you are not sure about shoot or drive. You keep these options available.

    Hey Coach, thanks for your breakdown content - love your channel, very helpful!
    One question about the 1-2 step + shotfake & drive with an open step: it often seems like a travel violation out of FIBA rules perspective because player lift their pivot foot before they release the ball.
    Any useful tips to help to avoid travel calls in those situations? Besides get the ball quickly out of your hands (release the ball just b4 lifting your pivot foot) or an euro start (see: ruclips.net/video/VOaG8rbkeE4/видео.html if you don't know what i refer to). Thanks in advance!

      Great question. I´m from Europe and played with FIBA rules my entire career and I got some strong opinions on this.
      Euro refs calling an open step a travel is such a shitty call. This move is deeply ingrained in the culture of the game and should be let slide in my opinion. If you wanted to call every technical travel then no player could ever rip strongside and there would be 50 travels every game. That “stab” dribble you linked is unnatural and slows you down. Having to take off like that on every drive would make basketball unplayable.
      But 2 main tips to minimize the chances of getting called:
      1) Catch it with your left pivot already planted.
      2) Do it slowly. That open step should not be taken with your momentum going forwards. Plant your right foot down before releasing.
      Here is a vid I made 2 years ago. Both players had their right foot not planted and travels were called.

    Is it a travel at 2:03?

    • @CoachFrikki
      @CoachFrikki  2 года назад +1

      Technically yes. You gotta keep that pivot foot 100% down. But a small lift rarely gets called.
