People and organizations rank players in every position, and everywhere I looked he was top 10. Pro Football Focus has a stat, Pass Blocking Efficiency, which takes into account the sacks, hits and hurries per snap and Matt Kalil ranked 6th after the 2012 season. Plus he made the Pro Bowl. It's always a great pick if a rookie can go to Hawaii, especially at the tackle position.
Blair Walsh:A decision that stuns America 8 months later, as he breaks the NFL record for 50+ yard FG. I give him #1 surprise player of the Vikings 2012 draft picks
Football Outsiders and Pro Football Focus do ratings and stats for basically anything you want to know. I've only been saying that Kalil is one of the top left tackles in the league. And with veterans like Ryan Clady, Joe Thomas and Joe Staley that's a pretty prestigious group. If we do well this year, I think we should target a guard in the early rounds next draft. With Kalil, Sullivan and Loadholt a good guard would give us a killer line.
You don't have to draft linemen high to have a good line. The ratings are very consistent, so I'm going to trust them. A lot of AP's success can be attributed to good run blocking. Sullivan was rated PFF's top center in the league last year and widely recognized as a top 3 center. Loadholt is a monstrous man and though he isn't the best pass blocker, he eats up defenders in the run game. Our guards are definitely the question marks on the line.
My opinions are: Matt Kalil- Starter Harrison Smith - Starter Josh Robinson- 3rd String CB behind Cook and Winfield TE we drafted- 3rd String Jarius Wright- PR/KR- Harvin insurance Greg Childs- competing for aromashadus job Blair Walsh- will beat out Ryan longwell for cap purposes The rest won't make it past camp
Yea i'm with you on that. I am kind of worried though AP and some of the other players weren't happy about losing Harvin and now Winfield. But i'm sure Spielman's got a plan. Would love to see us draft Tavon Austin with one of the first round picks.
skol Vikes!!! the only team in this division to dominate it for 6 years straight. first for 4 years straight. in the 70's before the bears in the 80's. superbowls aside the youngest franchise in the division with the most divisional titles speaks for itself.
list of QBs who didn't need time: Andrew Luck, RG3, russel wilson, Kapernick, Cousins. Cam newton. if Ponder plays against one of these guys in playoffs or Superbowl when he finally shines hes screwed. The QB class was just too damn good to miss out on with Ponder i think. Especially with AD who looked Superbowl ready.
Sullivan is an undersized center who does well with what he's got. If he's rated top 3 then that just tells me that those ratings aren't especially accurate. Peterson probably led the league last year in negative carries. That should tell you what you need to know about the o-line. And drafting o-line men in the earlier rounds is how you get a great o-line. It's not a coincidence that Kalil was drafted 4th overall.
You mean other than his appearance in the pro bowl and his ranking in the top 10 for offensive tackles after his rookie year? He was the best tackle available in the 2012 draft, and many people didn't think he'd make it past 3 so I'd say we're pretty lucky we got him.
lets hope Childs can be that guy he did dominate the SEC when he was healthy, and we all know that the SEC defenses arent scrubs they spit out the best defensive players every year.
Winfield will play the slot during 3 WR sets, but he's likely to be one of two starters on the outside as well. Right now our #3 is between Carr and Robinson. The two have been splitting reps. As for the Wr's, I agree completely on the top 5, but not the order. I think Jenkins either starts (my guess) or gets released, as he brings little special teams value.
I sort of doubt that anyone is commercially doing serious comprehensive o-line ratings. I think Kalil is a good start and our best OL. But, my overarching point is that when you have a guy like Peterson, your goal should be to have the best OL in the league and make sure that teams have to sag instead focusing on getting to him before he can get started.
Those are all great stats. For me, I don't know if he passes the eyeball test to be great. He doesn't seem like he does a great job of clearing space for AP, which is a major thing for me. But, yea, I think it was a solid pick, like I said. I am hopeful there's more to it than what I've seen. I don't live in the MN market; so I don't get to see as many Viking games as I want. I do wish that the Vikings would have had the foresight to focus on the o-line all along. Makes sense when you have AP.
It was a solid pick. I'm not doubting it. But, I still don't know about "great" was my point. BTW, what sort of ranking are you using? I've never heard of OT's having official rankings.
I don't think the Vikings truly have a top ten O-line like these sites purport. They're based on Peterson breaking big runs and the quick Ponder avoiding sacks. You look at it and aside from Kalil; they consistently have not drafted OL in the earlier rounds.
Obviously the best pick we had in this draft was Matt Khalil. But for reals Blair Walsh was. He scored more points then Christian ponder lol.(idk if true, but seems true lol)
I think even Stephen Burton rates higher in the Vikings eyes towards the future than Aromashadu. The only Aroma you smell is the stench that is about to be removed.
to be honest i dont think aromashadu will get much playing time cause Childs will impress this offseason if he stays healthy im a hogs fan and he dominated when he was healthy, aromashadu dropped some pretty easy passes last year also... recieving core will be Harvin,Childs,Jenkins, Wright and jerome simpson when hes done with his suspension
the Ponder pick fucked up all the perfectly good draft classes. did you see Rudolph's 60 yard burners in the pro bowl? wonder why i didn't see that all year. lol
I think your on the money with the receivers except Jenkins... I think armomashadu will get the job because we signed him and as a fifth receiver his speed is handy... Even though he probably won't play much. I really really hope that the O line holds up because I like ponder and if you take out the INT in the hail Mary pass against the saints and the 3 pick game he had when he was injured its pretty decent figures
I'm not prejudice. I'm a realist. A first or second round pick tends to have a higher ceiling than a fourth or fifth round pick or an invitee. Really, throwing loaded words like prejudice into a debate is counter productive. What's the difference between the 10 line that had Favre being beat to a pulp and the 12 line? Simply an upgrade in Kalil and a QB who has better mobility. Thus, we have a middle of the pack OL at best.
yea but we can throw michael jenkins out there too, just because he has nice hands and is 6'4, but he does piss me off(michael jenkins) because he is an underachiever.. but i wouldnt be mad at all is that turns out to be our line-up.. cause childs is 6'3 and simpson is 6'2 both with good speed and tenasity.. childs will be a studd 40" vertical, but we have to wait 3 games to see simpson play, but it gives more snaps to wright and childs to start the season so we can see what they can do.
And this is where your prejudice comes into play. Real analysts grade based on the players blocking, not on the yards gained by the RB. They go through every play of every game and grade each player based off of their performance. Loadholt is a beast in run blocking, making up for his pass blocking. And Sullivan is smart, which is exactly what you want a center to be. You're prejudiced because you will not accept any other opinion, even those of experts.
I loved this draft. We got two pro bowlers right off the bat including one all-pro. Smith will be included in the pro bowl soon. A solid blocking FB/TE, a great slot receiver in Wright. I was very happy with the draft.
im not saying aromashadu hands are bad, (cause as a vikes fan we've seen bad alla TROY WILLIAMSON).. but he dropped more than enough passes on comeback routes, aromashadu does posses good speed but so does Simpson and Wright, and wright has as sure of hands as they get his hands are as good as harvins
I can't say anything else. You're just wrong. I'm not sure if you realize what widely means. PFF does an unbelievable amount of analysis and yes, they actually do go back through the footage and watch every play of every game. You should check them out. They grade every single player in every single game based on a bunch of different attributes. It's pretty cool. Ok, I see that is where your prejudice has come from. We still managed to get a very good line, while plugging our other holes.
You aren't prejudice, but you are prejudiced. If you can't accept that our developmental players have gotten better and are now a part of a very good line as a whole, you've gotta understand that I'm going to call you prejudiced. We made moves in other places and didn't draft NFL-ready players or spend big money during a rebuilding period on a lineman and yet our line still got way better. It's a pity you can't see that. Experience is the most valuable variable in the NFL.
Man i love alot of the picks this year it reminds me of the years were we got AP and Harvin some pretty good players came from those draft and i think the same will happen with this one. Did you guys see that 56 yard feild goal looks like it could've been good from 65 damn what a leg!
Wouldn't it be hilariously ironic if Harvin got injured by a tackle from our #25 pick? I don't wanna sound sadist and vengeful but I think it would be funny.
Sullivan is *widely* regarded as a top center. Say all you want, he is elite. Probably? Forgive me if I'm not going to take speculation as a real argument. I'm going to go ahead and trust people who analyze for a living rather than cherry picked stats. There are plenty of other positions of need. No team is going to spend 5 early round picks on their line, you have to have some good late round prospects (Sullivan, Fusco could. develop)
If you post an exact link. I'll check it out. But even using their own search engines, they're giving me jack. I think prejudice is not a fitting word. I showed you that we have neglected the OL. We have a barely adequate line and we'd be screwed further with just one or two injuries.
To be honest, Aromashadu will not make the team. Harvin, Jenkins, Burton, Wright, and Childs will all make the team over him, and Simpson will fill out the roster after his suspension. I fully expect the starting two to be Harvin and Jenkins early on.
Look I don't see the point of Blanton... I get it good chemistry with smith at safety but if you watch the games stanford is the one guy in the secondary that's actually decent. Raymond was there because we had no one else. Winfield injured, Burton is too slow, Cooks and his issues, Allen was respectable but in coverage but really couldn't deflect a ball to save his life.
I'm saying you're prejudiced against our line because we haven't drafted top prospects or made big trades. You can still have a good line by developing prospects, as shown by the Vikes. I'm going to stick with the people who analyze for a living, thanks.
The individual stats are under the premium stats, I no longer have a subscription. Ironic that you were clamoring for commercially available stats. Google "ranking-the-2012-offensive-lines." There's our "barely adequate" ranking. Like I said, we could use some better guards but are solid at T and C. Your prejudice comes from the fact we've only had two early round picks. I think you're trying to say we're not deep, which is fair.
Can't find any such rankings on pff. I don't think Sullivan and Loadholt are anything special. Certainly, they're good enough to be starting on many teams though.
Mmmm... I don't think jenkins will make the cut bro. Yeah it's not a bad list of revievers but I think we're still missing that ELITE WR badly... Harvin is pretty good as our best but he has...mental issues. he put the team on his back last year but i mean... I'd rather a Julio Jones or A.J Green or Micheal Floyd. A standard 6'0" or bigger play maker
Again; you don't understand what prejudice means and insist on using the term incorrect ad nausea. Prejudice - preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. My notion that spending higher picks on the OL makes for a better OL is not prejudice. It's perfectly based in reason. The Vikings may have developed their call-ins as well as they could. But, there lack of focus on the OL in the draft is why the OL is not great.
Dude. Look-up prejudice. I don't think you understand what it means. Analysis does not equate to prejudice. I showed you the way in which the o-line has been neglected. Had they traded or signed top rate OL then that would be one thing; but we haven't. Frankly, the only reason people have the OL in their top tens is because its based upon Peterson's great running and Ponder's a bility to scramble. Make ZERO MISTAKE; we have a mediocre OL.
Sulivan is far from elite. He was a sixth rounder and at best he's played liked a solid third round pick . And nobody's analyzing anything. You're talking about some statistiicans who made some one size fits all formula. Nobody is going back and spending hours watching the trenches and analyzing these OL. Nobody is commercially that is. Do you know how many OL the Vikes have even drafted in the seven year AP era? Three. Freaking three. They've neglected the OL.
You haven't shown me anything to state that the Vikings O-Line is as good as you pretend it is. Favre got crushed in 2010 because the line was in shreds. And Kalil's strength is pass blocking more than run blocking and AP still got 2,000 plus yards. You take AP out of the mix and the stats would show a sub par line or a mediocre line at best. Seriously, Loadholt is not that great. Quick DLs get around him all the time and Sullivan is undersized. Kalil was a good add, but that's not a total fix.
Peterson opened the season with a 78 yard run. He's now at 16 carries and 88 yards rushing (was at 8 carries and 70). You have no idea what a "great" line is. Mediocre at best. I've been telling you that, bro.
I've never said that the Vikes could not have a good line w/o drafting high or spending big money. But, realistically, if neither happen, then the odds of a good o-line are slim. The Vikings have a mediocre line; not a good o-line. You're a homer who can't bring yourself to admit that reality.
No, you're prejudiced because you think that we cannot have a good line without drafting high or spending big money. There is plenty of evidence otherwise, including the Vikes whether you accept it or not. You should really learn to finish your words. It's 'ad nauseam.'
I suppose a majority of experts and analysts who, I'll reiterate this, analyze football for a living are Vikings homers too? Aww, did someone get mad because they didn't make any headway on a RUclips argument? Cute. It's the internet bro, don't let a meaningless argument get to you. PS- you got a little semi-colon happy there.
And this is where your prejudice comes into play. Real analysts grade based on the players blocking, not on the yards gained by the RB. They go through every play of every game and grade each player based off of their performance. Loadholt is a beast in run blocking, making up for his pass blocking. yeah smith is a stud!
+Tyler Ziemer best FS in football

another nice addition is Kamar Jorden he wasnt drafted but hes a pretty good reciever, he'll make the roster for sure

yeah I hope it is to! sucks to see harvin leave but I want players who want to be Vikings on the team
My opinions are:
Matt Kalil- Starter
Harrison Smith - Starter
Josh Robinson- 3rd String CB behind Cook and Winfield
TE we drafted- 3rd String
Jarius Wright- PR/KR- Harvin insurance
Greg Childs- competing for aromashadus job

He is a very good pass blocker, and a solid run blocker with some room to improve. I'd say that's a great rating for rookie.
greatest draft for the Vikings ever no busts.
YOU ARE SO RIGHT
Really hope Robert Blanton sees the field this season.....he was pretty good against Detroit at home earlier this season

Best picks in my opinion. Covers all the required positions we need to make a great 2012 season
Childs and Wright were so good for us at Arkansas. Best of luck to my new team the Vikings!
No deal. Our best picks from this class was Smith, Khalil, and Walsh
You look at it and aside from Kalil; they consistently have not drafted OL in the earlier rounds.
i heard about that, such a bummer hope he come back stronger then ever.
Obviously the best pick we had in this draft was Matt Khalil. But for reals Blair Walsh was. He scored more points then Christian ponder lol.(idk if true, but seems true lol)
Harrison Smith and Blair Walsh were great picks.
This was a great draft for the Vikes! If this year's is even close to last year's, it'll be HUGE.
I think even Stephen Burton rates higher in the Vikings eyes towards the future than Aromashadu. The only Aroma you smell is the stench that is about to be removed.
I'm happy with Sanford. Too bad we're outta they playoffs now D:
to be honest i dont think aromashadu will get much playing time cause Childs will impress this offseason if he stays healthy im a hogs fan and he dominated when he was healthy, aromashadu dropped some pretty easy passes last year also... recieving core will be Harvin,Childs,Jenkins, Wright and jerome simpson when hes done with his suspension
something tells me if childs doesn't get hurt, we hit on him too and we have our deep threat
the Ponder pick fucked up all the perfectly good draft classes. did you see Rudolph's 60 yard burners in the pro bowl? wonder why i didn't see that all year. lol
Man luke kuechly was on the board
I think your on the money with the receivers except Jenkins... I think armomashadu will get the job because we signed him and as a fifth receiver his speed is handy... The vikings had a really good first round. N a really good draft. Heawekooo to the playoffs baby...
Vikings should've drafted Russell Wilson the 66th pick that year!
Kalil was a needed upgrade at the OL. But at 4th overall? I haven't seen anything yet to say he was a great draft pick.
And this is where your prejudice comes into play.
Real analysts grade based on the players blocking, not on the yards gained by the RB. They go through every play of every game and grade each player based off of their performance.

Jason Cook the last couple have been 100 times better
Harrison Smith blocking a pass from kirk cousins.. playing together now
RHETT ELLISON!
Lol, Audie Cole sacking Teddy Bridgewater. Oh how the times changed today
Wow. Looking back at this we got 1 possible HoF FS and 1 decent WR out of this draft....
because it was the fucking pro bowl!
im not saying aromashadu hands are bad, (cause as a vikes fan we've seen bad alla TROY WILLIAMSON).. but he dropped more than enough passes on comeback routes, aromashadu does posses good speed but so does Simpson and Wright, and wright has as sure of hands as they get his hands are as good as harvins

0:10 oh my god matt kalil
i think thats how its going to eventually end up.. harvin, childs, wright and simpson in that order ,,childs is going to flurish this preseason
To be honest, Aromashadu will not make the team. Harvin, Jenkins, Burton, Wright, and Childs will all make the team over him, and Simpson will fill out the roster after his suspension. I fully expect the starting two to be Harvin and Jenkins early on.
Josh Robinson my cousin
Ponder just needs time, at this point in his career he's better than Tom Brady was. You didn't see those plays because Musgrave didn't call them.

Kickers almost always score more points then their QBs.....
Now we have 11 picks :) Hopefully it's as successful as last year's.
Matt Khalil is a freaking bum
but i think robinson will start over cook thats my guess
I'm saying you're prejudiced against our line because we haven't drafted top prospects or made big trades. You can still have a good line by developing prospects, as shown by the Vikes.
I'm going to stick with the people who analyze for a living, thanks.

Damn this was a good class for Vikings!
Except josh trash robinson
go vikes
FS/SS are interchangeable in Tampa 2 though, really.
Robinson was a bit of a bust
And this is where your prejudice comes into play.
Real analysts grade based on the players blocking, not on the yards gained by the RB. They go through every play of every game and grade each player based off of their performance.
Loadholt is a beast in run blocking, making up for his pass blocking. And Sullivan is smart, which is exactly what you want a center to be.
You're prejudiced because you will not accept any other opinion, even those of experts.
