2024 Mercedes Benz EQB 250+ Review | Not As Great As The GLB...

  • If you didn't know it, I love the GLB. It's good looking, practical, roomy, and you can get in itty-bitty third row that's shockingly useful. So when Mercedes announced that there would be an electric version, I was excited! The EQB promised all the versatility of the GLB with a plug. You can still get a third row, the interior is still boxy and practical, but... It's simply not as good. Why? Well, it's all about the motor choices and the price tag...

I'd be interested in a video showing the charge curve for this car. 100kW DCFC isn't amazing but if it can hold near the peak for most of the curve then it shouldn't be a problem.

Mercedes has deep discounts even though the MSRP could scare a lot of people. On Nov 20, 2023, I leased a $91K EQE500 4MATIC for the same lease payment as a $50K model Y (no options: free gray color, black seat, 19" wheels).
    Model Y lease term: 36 months, 15k mi/yr.
    $741 with CA 8.75% tax.
    Due at signing: $2870
    EQE500 lease term: 36 months, 15k mi/yr.
    $741 with CA 8.75% tax.
    Due at signing: $4250
    Refundable MSD: $8000
I paid extra $1380 for the drive off on the EQE500, and had to lend Mercedes $8k for 3 yrs to buy down the money factor. However, the extras paid was justifable, imho.

It seems to me that the EQB 250+ may have the most aggressive lease deals relative to the sticker price and might be one of the least expensive options based on monthly cost of ownership. In my mind this is likely a good choice to lease instead of to own - in 3 years we may have better choices. Sadly, my local Atlanta market seems terrible for getting a good lease deal relative to the rest of the country - if someone out there negotiates a good deal with a particular salemand/dealer in the area, please let me know. In spite of its faults, my wife would probably like this option the best due to the nameplate and conservative styling.

I’m in New Jersey, where best deals are offered (Cal may have more aggressive deals but we don’t have sales tax for EV). After I did the price analysis, I found EQB is cheap with the $60k price tag in mind. However the $60k price tag is unreasonable in the first place. Its range, acceleration, mechanical design, practicality, purchasability off lease, are more comparable to a $45k vehicle, which basically eats up the $7.5k tax credit and 8-10% discount. It’s not cheap for a realistically $45k vehicle.

I’ve considered a used 350 as price for what you get is the biggest issue here. You can’t even find them new around here in central Oregon.

I love the design and profile of the GLB. This EQ version seems a bit more jelly bean, but the biggest issue is the price. For the money would rather have the AMG GLB35 (or 45 if we got that on our shores).

We have had an EQA for over a year in Mexico, not sold in US but is Mercedes top selling EV. It’s amazing, great quality, and so much nicer than a Tesla for at the time less $$. Mercedes really knocked it out of the park for the cost. I prefer EQA styling to EQB also sold here. It’s plenty fast we don’t need 4 sec 0-60 Alex. Who wants a 3rd row in that class anyway?

I love the looks of this but the specs are sub mediocre. I can go get a fully loaded Ioniq 5 with almost twice the horsepower, a bigger battery, better charging speed and more range for less money and I can pick my color. Mercedes needs to do better for the money.

Alex, I think you're slightly off @4:38 - the EQB 250+ actually a marginally larger 70.5 kWh battery pack, whereas the EQB 300 & 350 4matic both use the 66.5 kWh pack. I suspect this is because the rear motor occupies some of the space which meant the less expensive FWD EQB 250+ can accommodate the bigger unit. This is why the EQB 250+ can do almost 400km on a single charge, whereas the EQB 4matic taps out at ~355km.
Honestly this is clearly targeted towards a entry level MB shopper who likes the idea of an EV. The 188hp is especially low for a car at ~2150kg curb. The FWD base model is strange (Even Volvo as you stated has moved away from that) and the pricing is...optimistic. You REALLY have to like that Mercedes badge up front to pick it over anything else in the segment. The EQB 350 also leases somewhat similar to the EQE 350 at least in certain states...no brainer for that one.

Obviously, the EQB 250+ is a dud compared to all the other luxury/near-luxury competitors. It isn't any sort of value if I have to buy a new set of tires so that it performs marginally better.
But then again, it's a Mercedes and has a pretty star and price tag.

When I opened the front hood of the EQB it killed off any interest in buying. Comparing that to a real EV clearly MB just tucked in an electric motor in a gas car without much thought in redesigning. This sloppy job is nowhere close to a traditional MB standard. More likely they had to come up with a model by certain deadline to comply. I’d say this is a transitional product and will be better in 2-3 years. Lease another car and come back to MB would be my advice to anyone considering it, unless you absolutely need that third row (but it’s impractical anyway).

Yes it's true the Tesla is less refined, but it does a more honest job of delivering good acceleration for the price. These Merc's marketing of paying more for just 1 second improvement and then paying more again for a second second. Come on. Ridiculous. Model Y dual motor gets you to 60 in 4.5.

I would say the range is fine, but the charge speed is the bigger issue. Playing around with ABRP shows you had better have patience if you venture outside of your home city's metro area, however for us, it is the exceptional use case and not the rule.

Call me a snob but, if its not a C, E or S, it's really not a Mercedes. In the US, the "cheap" Mercedes models have always been a disappointment. When Honda Toyota or Nissan makes a car that is superior in almost every measure and is more reliable, the 3 point star rapidly loses its appeal.

    • @naveenthemachine
