  • This video describes the Haven Knocker. It is an ultra simple engine sound generator that could be used on Low RPM model Workboats. There are many different ways to change the knocking sound and hopefully some viewers will take this idea and improve it.
    Good luck with your experiments!

what a wonderfull idea. no expensive electronics needed and have a great sound. fantastic.

Awesome gadget. Very clever. At slow speed it sounds like a Diesel engine with exhaust and water coming out of the exhaust tube

I've been an RCer for over 60 years and now trying RC sail and scale boats. Love the knocker. Thanks for sharing. Was surprised to see you are from Georgian Bay. I have been down here in NC since '68 but grew up in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach. I still have a bunch of family at the Beach.

No doubt a much more cost efficient system than a sound file through a loudspeaker. The slow speed sound is wonderful.

Pure mechanical genius. And so kind of you to share this thing with us, which is a kind of sympathetically anachronistic to the common use of electronics in RC models.
But what I appreciate most is that your goal is not to show off with your invention but to inspire other people to bring it further. Kudos!

This is great! Real clunker boat sounds! One thing that puts me off RC boats is the noise they don't make. My own scale RC boat does sound fairly correct, but that's because it's powered by a turbine engine. I love the way you have all the adjustments.👍

When I was a kid we did similar with our bikes. A bit of card hitting the spokes.at lower speed it was best.
I believe it sounds better than the sound generator on model rail.

As a sound guy: That is a pretty darn good facsimile of the sound of a diesel engine relative to the scale. I could definitely hear the dampening of the lid when you put the rubber band over it to hold it in place and thought it sounded better without it, a pair (or three) of small screws through the lid into the can would allow it to resonate in its full glory. I'd love to hear it in the water. Great Stuff!

Sounds awesome at slow speeds. I wonder what it would sound like with a second "beater" at 90° to the first? Would you get a Harley V-twin style sound that becomes a deeper V block diesel?

I'd like to get one of those small steam engines that run on alcohol, and make a small charcoal furnace to power it. Would sound great, and have the potential to catch fire and sink. At least the sound and smoke would be real, as well as the tragedy if it struck any ice burgs.

Excellent invention! I imagine the striking collar makes the driveshaft rotation unbalanced slightly. Would that cause premature wear on the shaft bearings, especially at higher rpm's?

    • @RCWorkboatHaven
      @RCWorkboatHaven  4 месяца назад +1

Yes there is going to be more wear especially at high RPMs. The Knocker is best applied to lower RPM models like Trawlers, Tugs and Steamers. I suggest keeping the arm tension to a minimum and use light weight objects in the can. Brian RCWH

Hey, you ever tried more than one knock actuators? I mean on the knocker, not just the one contact pin but put another 180° around other side. Then have two knocks per rotation. Mabey that would sound cool.......

    • @nigelwilliams7920

Well perhaps if you used say sand or very fine pebbles in the tin, it may give more of a hissing sound. Maybe remove one of the screws on the 'cam' to only give one 'knock' per rev of the prop too. Nice fun effort!

To my ear it sounds like it is to fast for old time steam or diesel engine. Maybe gear on the other end of the electric motor, or even better run a second small motor with a resistor to spin slower the propulsion motor to give that power stroke sound and speed.
