Oh gosh, I broke my Ankle two days before Christmas, and the only good thing that has come out of this is that I found your Fabulous channel. Daily I set in my bed with my cast propped up watching you and wishing that I could get in my garden and change everything around along with visiting my garden center. People like us go Absolutely Out of our minds if we can’t get in our yard. Wow, If I only had you and a Michael in my area. Thank you for your knowledge and inspiration.
What a fun episode! A picture is worth a thousand words! Michael glassman is right! Extend the back deck! I agree with you, Janey, the original backyard landscaping structure was pretty and had a lot of potential. The only thing the renovation got right was removing old those huge cacti!
So cool to see the old photos of your home and gain insight into the struggles you've faced developing your landscape moving forward! Thank you for sharing them!
It’s so interesting to see the old pictures of your property. The lattice on the front certainly lends privacy to the patio, but they tend to fall apart as they age. I think a few strategically placed panels of your cut metal screens, like the one by the hot tub, would be beautiful and age much better.
Such a gift to have the earlier photos of your beautiful home. I too question things that were done previously in my home but often have to remind myself that the previous owners probably did the best they could at the time. You and Jason have improved the property tenfold and I'm sure more to come in 2025♥
Wow! Those old photos of your property were beautiful. It just shows what a difference a landscape can make. You’ll do something equally gorgeous! I really like the lattice panels as well. No more issues with 3 front doors and it makes your entryway look so cozy.
Coud you please tell us how to find those historical pictures of our houses. I would love to see how my property used to look like. Thank you in advance. Love all of your videos.
Unfortunately I don’t think it’s available for all addresses. It probably depends on when it was last sold, which pictures are available, etc. I am able to see it on my phone, so that’s not the issue. Sorry it didn’t work for you!
@@Jason_DPWR it seems that this website only shows properties in the United States. I wasn't able to search for any locations in Canada (looked up a few cities near me and it only gave American search results). Might be why some people are having troubles?
It is amazing when gardening you find the ghosts of gardens past (concrete and rocks) . I am dealing with so much buried hardscape in my backyard, but seeing you overcome it in yard gives me hope. I got so depressed after trying to deal with it and the month of 100+ heat last July I was ready to throw in the towel! After watching your video I am ready to get back to it - visiting Wyntour Gardens this week while visiting family this week. The one January task I really have to tackle is WEEDING - any little weed left alone will be enormous after the January rain we get if I don't make sure it is gone!! Happy New Year and New Season of Gardening!!🌻🌳
The xx owner had better gardening taste than the x owner, at least to my understanding, but now the property looks 5 times better since you took over. 💚
Happy new years to you and your family !! Can you share how you got those photos ? I’ve been trying to figure out something about a house we bought a few years ago. No luck yet. Thank you ❤
Oh my goodness it does make sense now! I still think that property needed you to show it some real love though 🥰 What you and Jason have accomplished is outstanding!! It’s funny how some of your ideas have been a fresh take on an old design isn’t it!
Wow! I loved seeing what the garden used to look like. Isn’t it nice to have an explanation for all the stuff that you are finding? I cannot believe they just covered it all up with dirt and mulch. How lazy is that? If it was me, I would be thrilled every time I dug up something because I’d be like oh I’m gonna use this here. Every time I find some odd thing buried in the dirt in my yard. It comes out and in a pile to be used for something else later I found concrete where I didn’t want it and I broke it up and I use it as stepping stones in my front garden. I have found round concrete pavers just a few and I use those to elevate big pots in the garden. Anyway if I were you, I’d just look at it as free gifts although I know it’s a lot of work. My backyard had a bed at one time that was lined with rocks. The bed was far too shallow, but I dug each rock up set aside and they are gonna be main features in my dry Creek bed. I am super happy to have them as for my plan for winter gardening. I am going to clear my east bed or rather create an east bed in my backyard clear the grass put down cardboard put dirt on top and I’ll be ready for planting in spring! Last year a plumbing company tore up my whole back bed or half of it to replace My back Neighbor’s sewer line. I had an open trench 5 foot deep and 8 foot wide for a full month when they finally filled in it was a huge mess. I had to let it settle and then I had to re-dig and smooth and then a cable company came out to redo their cable line that messed it up again so bad that was already made and I just needed to add to. It had to be started over completely from scratch. It was June and July before I could plant in it. I am so looking forward to being able to just pop plants into it this year. I would love to see photos of your garden now compared to those photos that you just showed us. I know your garden is a work in progress, but I’d love to see how it compares. Happy new year!
Zone 10 in FL and my Pope John Paul II roses are in their biggest bloom of the year. I planted them in January of 2024 and they are/ were my first rose bushes (I now have 11 of different varieties!) Still have a ton to learn and have not pruned them yet but do always deadhead them.
Happy new year. With no injuries. Love seeing old photos. Don’t understand closing off the front patio, with a gate , unless it was to keep children or pets from getting out. When your front garden is finished, it will be beautiful, dry creek bed and flowers. Love to sit and view all the front garden. Planning is the most fun. Enjoy.
It's rooted in the Spanish via Arabic culture of a private courtyard in front of the house. You see it all over the world in places of Spanish and Arab colonization.
Happy New year. Zone 3. My spring/ summer flowering bulbs go in late October or November if the snow hasn’t come. Mostly I do Oct. I don’t start seeds because my season is so short. And I have no place to start them indoors. And then I support my local garden centres with seedlings.
I’ve always been the type to want to dig around, scrape away, replace with good soil. You cannot amend away landscape rock. I’m in the same boat. Need to get a tractor to dig out a gravel driveway so I can fill with good soil and garden there.
I live in a much colder climate - Iowa - but I found I can still scratch the seed-starting itch in January by using the Winter Sowing method. This will be my third year doing it. It's been a total game-changer in my garden. When my neighbors are waiting to buy (expensive) starts in May, I've got hundreds of seedlings for the price of a seed packet and some potting soil. I love watching for ideas, even though our climates are so different. (And to live vicariously through people who CAN grow citrus outdoors. 😂)
I going to try the winter sowing method this year. I'm excited to see what I can grow. Only thing is we have lots of deer and rabbits. Last summer was the worst it's ever been. I live in zone 7a and I could really use some pointers on what I can grow that those deer and rabbits don't like. ❤
Over the last couple of years, I have planted the opera series of petunias, and they do not disappoint. I particularly enjoy the pink morn variety. They thrive in the southeastern heat and humidity and last all summer. Just mentioning because I see you are also in seed starting mode.
I learned as a MG, to mix copper sulfate with dormant oil for peach leaf curl. The copper is preventive for curl and the dormant oil is for insects AND it helps adhere the copper sulfate to the tree. Also important to spray when you have a few dry days after spraying. 😃
Since we have 19 degrees F and everything is frosty all I do in my garden is: feeding the birds. 😁 That´s interessting and I don´t get it: Why did the people before you take all this landscaping away? Was the plan to transform it but they didn´t came around doing it? So many questions. I´m working in my garden for about 7 years and everytime I dig I find a rock or a piece of stone countertop/window sill or concrete or a toy or a piece of pottery or glas or a clothespin or something! I woder what the people before me did in this garden. 😅 Happy new year to you and all the people watching you!
Wow! It's interesting to see the pictures from your property. Definitely love the back deck. Don't know why somebody would take that out. It was beautiful. You need another one. Add it to the list as you said
Happy New Year Janey, just wow with those pictures. Why someone would rip all that out is crazy. I can see some of it being gone for sure, like the cactus omg ! But never fear you will have it beautiful in time. Love your videos even though I live in the east zone 6a.
The old photos show a garden with structure and it’s own kind of beauty, it’s wild that in five years that became weeds, dirt and all the hardscape was removed . I never understand that. There is a house down the street that had a beautiful front yard with a berm landscaped with huge boulders and structural old evergreens. It’s was very well done and expensive. New owners just bulldozed flat, ripped all plants out and put in a lawn… it boggles the mind.
Could you share the link(s) you used to find historical pics of your property? Our home was built around the turn of the 20th Century and I'd love to see it!
Janey, while ordering bulbs you may want to look at Florida Boys Caladiums website. In your shade garden you could fill the shade side with beautiful caldiums. They also sell caladium bulbs that can take sun!! I live in lower Alabama zone 9a and caladiums planted in the back of a mondo grass border in my shade garden looks lush!
Thank you for telling me it's not too late to get my bulbs in the ground!! LOL. Also, we just bought an older home that was renovated before we moved in and were running into a lot of the things you were...found the old photos of pre-renovation and it was so nice to understand the "why" - we found covered up gravel too.....turns out it was an old gravel driveway. Planting anything in that area has been a nightmare now we know why!
Weeding! Perfect time to weed with all our rain. Yes would love to find out how to find old photos. We bought a beautiful English garden in the Sierra Foothills. It’s such a gem and was designed by by an Irishman about 15 years ago. I’d love to find old pictures of its original design
Happy new year to you and your family and all your followers. I’m in N W England quite mild but very wet💦☔️I’ve already been in my garden between showers collecting pots for my last minute bulb planting. January will be very busy for me as I want to build raised beds in my allotment and I have fencing to replace in my garden. It’s a good time to do structural work when the weather isn’t too bad. I try to do as much as I can (69 year old female) but some times I need to wait for help from my son. 😁😁 loved seeing the old photos 😍😍
Thats cool to find those pictures! You say 2nd week of January to plant bulbs, I was told to have them in the ground by Thanksgiving weekend, so thats what I go by here in 9b Ca... by the way my daffodil bulbs are popping up about 2 wks ago and paper whites, they do not wait until March.
Happy New Year Janey! I received your newsletter, and love the idea of bingo to keep me motivated to keep gardening. My hip has been giving me problems since July, so my backyard is a complete mess. Hopefully I will be able to break the clean up into bite sized pieces, and keep moving forward. That is so cool that you found pictures of your property from the past. I agree that it looked quite nice before everything got buried. What a strange way to go about changing the landscape.
Happy New Year!!! 🎉How cool you got those photos of what the property looked like. I must say it looks so much better now. Our lots are we’re an old piano factory, so rocky, random metal pieces still in soil. Kind of a cool history out streets Ivory and Ebony lol
Wow what a nice improvement that lattice fence would make to the front of your house👍👍👍👍 The beautiful deck that was removed would also make such a nice improvement to the backyard! Crazy that they would have removed it, it looked like it had been repaired compared to the fence that ran from the deck to your office building. Michael Glassman is right on with putting the deck back! Your yard will come into all its glory by the time you are done, great job👍!
I also live in zone 9 central CA and we actually have many blooms on our Standard roses but we will get out defoliant, trim and spray, I have a lot of areas of ugliness in them, wow your place has changed I even notice new fence in some areas definitely a different landscape then
It was so interesting to see your property in the old photos. How did you find the photos? I watched a few videos from your first property, but got hooked on your show when you gave your first tour of the new property. Your excitement was contagious. I’m amazed at what you and Jason have accomplished. What a transformation! I can’t wait to see what you share in 2025. I’ll be glad as you guys will be to see the tank out front go away. It will be fun to watch your new trees fill in. What a beautiful addition!
Hi Janey, that is really cool and the back yard was pretty. You just keep finding treasures as you dig. Thank you for all your content this year. I have learned so much for you. I really need to take some video of my yard/garden. Would love to show you all the hostas we have. I live about 15 miles outside of Boston.
Just a hint... Obedient plant is a voracious reseeder!! It spreads like crazy in my zone 6b/7a garden. It was great to see those old photos of y'all's property. My friend has the same problem in her yard - all kinds of stuff buried just below the surface of the grass. What a pain! Your gardens are coming along so nicely, Janey. It's amazing what can be done in just over a year, huh?
It seems like the previous plantings in your garden were desert/xeriscape type plantings, especially all those cactus. All those lattice panels closed off the front of your house, but were not attractive. There could be attractive ways to have a courtyard in front of your house. Good luck figuring everything things out. What you have done so far looks great!
Hi Janey 🌺. Happy new year . I enjoyed watching this beautiful video . I have a lot of projects in my garden I planted many trees and I am still planting . Janey we can also plant cabbage , cauliflower and lettuce seedlings in January . Have a great day .🎄♥️🎄♥️🎄
Janey! (Edited to add: Wait, is it Janie!? I just saw a comment where it was “ie” Oof!) I live in Oroville, CA zone 9b, I think around an hour away from you. I’ve planted bulbs in springtime when it’s warm outside and they still sprout & flower that same season! Idk how, I’ve never chilled anything!
Love your optimism and "can do" attitude when it comes to problems in the garden. Frustrating when you have to deal with the issues that a former owner left you when they did not do things properly.
Wow, those pictures before they covered everything up. I could've been so beautiful, well you and Jason could've made it look beautiful. But I love the way that y'all have it now than they had it then. Winters around Gere are dead. Zone 7a, really nothing to do in the garden but thanking dead stuff out. Not annuals, I've already done this. Great video, love your channel and love y'all. Happy New Year ❤❤❤❤❤
enjoyed this video very much...so interesting about your property's past...that explains a lot...am anxious for you (us) to get started in your garden again...I really learn a lot from your videos and usually plant what your planting as I am in 9B also. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Happy New Year to my favorite garden inspiration person! Do you have recommendations for dahlia tubers. My plan is to create raised beds (I’m also in 9b) but the sites and sales are overwhelming. Thanks!
I can’t stand the first owners cactus but other than that it looked pretty nice. I don’t understand any design choices of the 2nd owners. They really destroyed the property. But you are restoring it to its original glory and even better!
🕛Happy New Year to You and your Family. 🎊 Wow the photos of the property are stunny, all that cement Rock pavers don't understand why they buried it. Michael, righf You should put that wood patio back in the backyard it will look amazing. I feel for you digging and you hit cement, Rock, etc.I think I would of given up, your property is looking great I'm so glad I found your gardening channel. Thank you for taking us through your journey. Have a great rest of the day. 😊👋🎊.
Janie, Happy New Year! I love all that you have done in your garden. Can’t wait to see the 2nd year growth. I’m in zone 9a, Foley, AL. My Eden rose looks beautiful. Do I defoliate it and cut it back? Do I fertilize and give it blood or bone meal? Maybe you can do a video on roses. Thank you!
Hi Janey. You are 100% right about this original garden that you have just found in the photos! Wow! It looks much prettier than it did when you bought it from the owners. You can really see the potential that it had with first? owners; even the palm trees didn't look as out of place. All of the prickly pear cacti were a bit much, hey, and dangerous for children and dogs. Maybe the owners like to eat them and that's why they planted them in the orchard. 😅🤣You have to laugh though, as they do look quite comical, and Dr 'Zeus-ish' 🤔Very original too! I have never seen a garden like that in Australia and we get some weird ones here 'down under' 🙃🐨❄🌴⛄🌜It definitely looked more lush with green grass and natural wood decking so it was a shame that the next owner got rid of all that greenery. Pity that when you and Jason bought your property the decking was painted red, plus you got a few more hidden unwanted surprises. Yes - the buried concrete. You definitely got more than you bargained for, that's for sure. However, your property is large, in a beautiful country area, has some magnificent established trees already on it, and it came with many wonderful structural features including your work garage, shed, extra rooms in your house and your gorgeous, cute office. You still have so much land to develop your garden in. Lots of potential. You have such good taste so everything always looks beautiful.
I wonder if the people you bought from had let the hard scape get weedy? Then to sell, the realtor suggested the easiest thing was to just cover it up…

Happy New Year 🎆🥳2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣5️⃣Janey! Let The Gardening Begin 🙌🏻 The look back was very interesting! Have a Blessed Day 😊
It’s pretty cool to see the past. I think you need that larger back deck. But pretty sure that fence should be first.
Happy New Year Janey and friends!!!!! 🎊 🎆🎈
Wow! Treasure in these photos! Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Can you please share how to look up the old photos?
Thats cool to find those pictures! You say 2nd week of January to plant bulbs, I was told to have them in the ground by Thanksgiving weekend, so thats what I go by here in 9b Ca... by the way my daffodil bulbs are popping up about 2 wks ago and paper whites, they do not wait until March.
Happy New Year, Janey! 🎉
Bom dia!! Feliz Ano Novo!✨️🥂🍾❤
Wow, I think your yard was pretty !!! The only thing i don't like is the lattice in the front, it hides the home.
I also live in zone 9 central CA and we actually have many blooms on our Standard roses but we will get out defoliant, trim and spray, I have a lot of areas of ugliness in them, wow your place has changed I even notice new fence in some areas definitely a different landscape then
The pictures shows the previous owners loved their yardnand spent alot of time in it. Just a different type of yard
Wow it was actually pretty !.
I agree!
I love the wall hanging / tapestry hanging on your office wall behind you. Can you post a link where you found it?
So cool that you were able to get those photos !! So interesting !
Great photo find. Now you can look forward to the treasure hunt.
Happy New Years, Janey and family. Another reason the deck was removed is, maybe, it wasn’t up to code.
Morning
It seems like the previous plantings in your garden were desert/xeriscape type plantings, especially all those cactus. All those lattice panels closed off the front of your house, but were not attractive. There could be attractive ways to have a courtyard in front of your house. Good luck figuring everything things out. What you have done so far looks great!
Wow! Interesting!
You may need to buy a jackhammer to use when you hit concrete while trying to plant things.
Hello neighbor. How is gardening in your area? The soil looks like it's clay and rocky so I always think it must be difficult to garden in Oroville.
Happy New Year 🎉
I like the way your property looked. Why someone would change it, I don't understand. That deck was beautiful!
Happy New Year
😂 surviving. In Southern hemisphere, so summer, and having a heatwave interspersed with rain, just making it more humid.
Love your optimism and "can do" attitude when it comes to problems in the garden. Frustrating when you have to deal with the issues that a former owner left you when they did not do things properly.
Huggers on way gardening! Hugs Janey! Love!😊
That’s crazy that the last owners just covered it all. I think it was pretty, but what a pain for you guys now.
Happy New Year!
Oh, wow is kind of pretty the way they had it! Happy New Year!
lol no wonder digging is a train wreck! Now you know! So glad you found the photos! That maybe will let you know when you hit things what it is!
Thank you for the great video
Can you share the link of how to get historical photos of homes😊
Can use these photos to identify where concrete is in order to pull it up.
Happy New Year to my favorite garden inspiration person! Do you have recommendations for dahlia tubers. My plan is to create raised beds (I’m also in 9b) but the sites and sales are overwhelming. Thanks!
To funny, I agree there's alot of positives there they took out.
I can’t stand the first owners cactus but other than that it looked pretty nice. I don’t understand any design choices of the 2nd owners. They really destroyed the property. But you are restoring it to its original glory and even better!
🕛Happy New Year to You and your Family. 🎊
Wow the photos of the property are stunny, all that cement Rock pavers don't understand why they buried it.
I always learn something listening to you thank you❤
Janie, Happy New Year! Thank you!
Happy New Year Janey! 🎊🥳
Great January newsletter! I’m excited to fill out the cool DPWR Bingo Card. So much fun! 🪴🇨🇦
Hi, can you tell me where you purchased your seed starting shelve?
Then to sell, the realtor suggested the easiest thing was to just cover it up…
Happy New year to you and your family.
