- Growing jujube, also known as Chinese date or red date, (Ziziphus jujuba) in USDA zone 9b, Sunset zone 14 in Northern California. Here I talk about the varieties (cultivars) "Sugar Cane" and "Li"
I just got one of these today, a friend of mine keeps raving how great these trees are. Wish me luck.

@@WizBoots When I planted it, it was a stick that was up to my knee and because of the color of the bark I thought it was dead. Well its about 7'6" as of right now, had a couple of little fruits but they dropped. Looks extremely healthy and I swear it is growing bigger every day. I planted a lot of trees last year, this is the one I am least worried about. So yeah, going really good so far.
I love this fruit; sweet, juice and crunchy. Eat a few of these after dinner will help you sleep good.

Called "ber" in India. It is super sweet, crunchy, nutritious and just good. It grows in semi arid North West India. Loves sun and very little water.

I have a pretty big sugarcane variety but produces very little fruit. I just bought a li to cross pollinate... hopefully it'll fruit more this year.
This sugarcane took several years before it bore fruit, then fruited sparsely. But the last two years it has been very productive. I do see nursery jujubes covered with fruit even though they are small, but in my experience it takes them several years in the ground before they do anything
I planted 6-7 feet tall sugar cane and honey jar jujube (already flowers on them) this year. I ordered them online, very expensive !! :(

I just planted Li ,and sugarcane last year. Order it online bare root. Hopefully it will produce next year. Trees struggling to grow this year since they cut off all branches. Never order online again since I can't pick up my self.
Every jujube I have bought has been cut back either all the way or most of the way due to the thornyness of the branches. They will grow back just fine typically, although every single one I have planed struggled for 1-3 years before they took off. Easy easy to grow once established, but sometimes difficult to establish has been my experience.
You can buy Li and Lang jujubes at Moon Valley Nursery, Star Nursery or Lowes no problem now. The tree I bought at Lowes was over 6' tall with plenty of branches in a 3.5 gal for only $22. The cultivars beside those two you will have to buy online or go to a tropical plant nursery.

@@hollynguyen3861 I have checked lazada, but nothing,Shoppee has posting but dried fruit.. PH is a little tricky on live plants shipping from abroad. Last time I saw this plant and fruit was in Dalat in VietNam.

I'm going to have to try those! I love the crunch of water chestnuts. :D How well can they take heat? I live in an area of Texas that gets over 100 regularly a couple months out of the year though one summer we had over 100 for an entire summer. - Heidi
They LOVE the heat. Over 100 and they are happy! Texas is jujube country
They even do well in Phoenix where it can reach 122!

"Sugar cane" for fresh eating. "Lang" for dried. "Li" is excellent for both IMO

I have a honey jar variety. I was wondering if you could compare it with a Sugarcane that you have. I like the honey jar because it’s very sweet relative to my Li and Lang, but the tree I have produces very small fruits and big seeds so it isn’t ideal.
I would say they are similar in flavor, but I like sugarcane better. Sugarcane also produces somewhat small fruits but not big seeds

yes, like a cherry or plum as far as that goes. Also similar to a date pit or olive pit.
How well do they handle frost?
They are deciduous, so as long as they are dormant they handle frost just fine. If they have already leafed out in spring and you get a late frost, will damage the new growth, or if you get super early frosts before the fruit ripens then it will destroy the fruit. But they are NOT tropical or subtropical.

Jujube is Sidr. Sidr available in Arabian peninsula with three main variety The first is called Ebri it has similar size leaves and fruit as the ziziphus one , the second is Baladi or Nebeq more like sugar cane the third grows in the desert leaves are smaller than fruit itself and the seeds are normally bigger than the fruit skin. Many other variety available came from India Southeast Asia. Amazing and blessed fruit. Also called knar fruit.

How cold resistant are they?
They need a long hot growing season, but are completely deciduous, and not early to bud. Are very cold tolerant when dormant, down to -28 F

The varieties I spoke of are available through nurseries in the United States. You can get them bareroot in winter. I believe most of mine are from Dave Wilson Nursery.

I do not. I know daleysfr (RUclips channel) is in Australia and has jujube trees.
They also don't breed true from seed, so if you looking for the varieties in my video, that isn't the way to go.

Fresh jujube twigs can be propagated by grafting or cutting.
Can they grow in zone 4 or 5?
They are hardy when dormant to -28 degrees F. So yes for the most part. However, once they leaf out they are sensitive as well as the fruit which tends to ripen late can be ruined by early frosts and freezes.
@@feralkevin i did some research n thrs a few that can grow in my zone 4 so i may get two if i can make some space but i really like the honey jujube though not sure it will survive here.

Jujube varieties are typically grown from cutting onto rootstock. The seeds are unlikely to breed true. Although most people don't know about jujube trees, these varieties are fairly common in the nursery trade. I believe I got these trees via Dave Wilson Nursery.

Jujubes are temperate climate plants, winter deciduous, don't know if they will work there. However, being in the tropics you can grow so many other amazing things that I wish I could grow!!!
Ok so what about seeds. We also have jujube here but it's not like that it's called dunks here in trinidad. Trinidad has alot of dese fruits but not that types u guys have so I was wondering if it wud grow here
@@kerryramnarine6820 Jujube seeds don't grow true to the parent, my varieties are all grafted. There are more tropical jujube varieties that I have not tried, however many report they are not as tasty.

I have a jujubi tree in container. it flowering a lot but not fruiting. what to do?
Possibly pollination? The flowers should be buzzing with insects off all sorts. Also, it can drop young fruit when too dry, although they are drought tolerant, don't let them dry out when setting fruit. Also, jujubes, which certainly can form fruit and ripen them in containers, much prefer to be in the ground where their roots can spread out.

Nope. I buy them. :) I have now bought and planted 4 Li, 2 Lang, 1 Sugar Cane, 1 Shanxi Li, and 2 GA-866 (but one of them perished) I have trouble getting them to take sometimes, but once they do, they are very tough and productive.
