    • @jd3497

What happened to the idea of getting a tub grinder on site and reducing all the brush you had already cut? Trimming trees and brush back just enough to get the truck by is wasted effort. You'll only have to come by a second time and repeat the process.
Clear one section completely and move on. As it's just the two of you, no volunteers and no paid crew, do you really have the luxury of working inefficiently?

One thing I learned from the old guys that do track maintenance is that there's a reason they pulled those timbers out from beneath the tracks... Putting them back beneath the track is just a lot more work for the tie gang because in a couple years they will be ready to come out again. For the money, you could probably get away with using gauge rods instead of old used timbers.
It's been a few years since I saw the price tag of a fresh new 10x12x8ft tie, what do they cost these days? I think 2012 they were about $100 if you were buying more than one bundle. Tie gangs were doing complete swap-outs at $132k per mile. Now, ten years later I imagine they are probably twice that, yea?

What we did on our line...Red Springs and Northern, one of our members purchased a side boom mower that the DOT used to use to mow the shoulders of highways. He picked up the older setup from Delks Army Surplus in Asheboro NC at a good price. He crafted hydraulic lifts for the front and rear, used motorcar wheels and axles. Using the rear pig tail connections on the rear of the tractor for hydraulic power for the front and rear wheels to lift and lower. The mower swings out wide and has a 60 inch cutter head. Does wonders. Just some food for thought...

Looks like someone at Genesee & Wyoming never got the memo about the purchase of the spur and the "existence" of a new "railroad" there. This is where things can get real messy real fast... G&W has fought legal battles over its spurs as recently as 2016, in Ohio, see: Allied Erecting and Dismantling v. Ohio Pennsylvania Railroad Company (Mahoning Valley Railway). The track is most likely still part of an easement for G&W to provide common carrier rail service to all those businesses in the rail park.

Nice work today.... one step at a time. Looks like some of those tree's need to come out really... I spent the last three days in Track Inspection school.... and now I am a 'qualified track inspector'.... although I only really know just enough to be dangerous! haha... or at least I know enough to be able to identify and measure for defects and determine train speeds.

Hey Brian, if you need more ties I know a place in Barberton, OH near Akron that sells ties with 4 good sides for $14 each or 3 good sides for $5 a piece. Let me know and I can get you more info. Like the videos and keep up the good work. Kevin

If I could I'd come build an authentic #TrampCamp nearby. A place in the shade at a switch point or the end of the line. Semi dugout, roofed in tin, all log and split log construction with wood doweling used for long-long lasting structural support. Maybe add a #HoboStove in the earthen wall for those cold days at the end of the line where you would want to sit by a small safe fire and percolate a pot of coffee and watch the snowfall... And Admire Trains In All Of Their Beauty !
The things possible for you are limitless at this point, just keep on Rollin' and God's got your back. Count on it. ;)
With all due respect and adoration, your RUclips fan,

P.S. That brush clean up, mmmaaannn, never ending nightmare, huh ? I recommend a STIHL MS-170.
I love mine and it's as reliable as my Pit Bulls or the 5-shot .38 in my waistband.

It was great to meet you in person while you where in Plant City Florida! Your railroad is looking better and better. I like how you guys are always figuring out new ways to use the equipment you have.
Are you two going to replace those ties yourself? Even old ones weigh a lot.
