  • After the success of my first Random Tram Game in Gdansk, Poland, I decided to try it again in Bucharest, Romania. With around 27 tram lines, a 6-sided dice wouldn't really work, so I planned to use the six nearest lines to my hotel which was near Bucharest North railway station. What could possibly go wrong? I found out. #bucharest

Hello from Bucharest! I am a fan of your channel and I'm sorry for what you experienced with the public transport system here. I am curious on which day you were filming, because there have been some issues with the tram network lately :(

Hello Scott! You experienced history on that day in Bucharest. Those trams designs are from the 70s, who copied a german tram made in the 60s. Some trams still in circulation are 40 years old, while the youngest are the ones with army color (ish) delivered 2013 i think, which us a low floor design of the old trams. Bucharest tram and trolleybus infrustructure is much like the old car your dad used to always work on to keep it running. The city is buying new ones now. Hope you liked it!

I disagree. There is one tram that is indeed 40 years old that appears in one shot (at 6:43), which is a Tatra tram, produced in Czechoslovachia in the 1970s but he never travelled on it. The rest of the trams we see in the video have been refurbished between 2000 and 2003. The newest ones are indeed from around 2013 (the last one he rides on is one of those, as well as the first one he gets on).

The Romans introduced Latin to Britain, which significantly impacted the development of the English language:
Latin Roots: Many English words have Latin roots, particularly in legal, medical, and scientific terminology.
Place Names: Numerous place names in Britain have Latin origins, such as “Lancaster” (castrum, meaning fort) and “Gloucester” (Glevum).

@Paralyzer is so profound that it is barely left any trace. Today's English has more germanic and Anglo Saxonic influence more than anything else. For a territory that was occupied for 400 years by Romans, Latin influence isn't that much present.

@@loredanadincu4300 latin influence isn’t that much present ? Ok so the name London isn’t a big deal that the Romans named our capital, modern English wouldn’t exist if it were not for the Romans
A substantial portion of the English vocabulary is derived from Latin, either directly or through Old French, due to the Norman Conquest. The Romans introduced Christianity to Britain, which played a crucial role in the subsequent spread of Latin through the church and religious texts. Without Roman influence, the Christianization of Britain would have taken a different path, so again you’re delusional, go learn history, you are completely Wrong , you know nothing about the history of Britain,

There is a damn reason why English isn't recognized as one of the romance languages. Because the Germanic and Anglo Saxon influences are much stronger than the Latin ones

So, you caught our trams in a period of lows. New models are arriving soon. Number 1 Tram is a circular route, but parts of it are currently being rebuild, hence the tram 10, that completes the half number 1 can't do anymore. Most of the trams you see are Romanian built, in Bucharest, but they are old (usually bodywork gets redone every now and then, but wheel/engine assemblies are 1980s). We kinda ditched the ticket, we use cards for paying fares, and you can either use your own credit card to pay in the Bus/Tram/Trolley/Subway or you get a STB Card to recharge for pay as you go/monthly packages. There is also a surcharged SMS option. For those booths, be on the lookout for Matte Silver Booths, but yes, there aren't as many! Also, the fine is equivalent to a one month all included plan.

It's so funny as a local to hear you say "I don't see any of these ticket booths" when your are in a shot with one over your left shoulder. It's true, it's not marked AT ALL on the back, but that's why it's so funny. 3:01
Seems like when you visited the 1 and 10 were disconnected, which happened awhile back. Normally they run paralel to each other, with the 1 going one way and the 10 going the other. However, for the period in which they replaced some lines, the 10 did one side of the loop both ways, and the 1 did the other side of the loop both ways with a different finish. The connected to each other in Sura Mare terminus. It looks like there was a power outage on the lines there, and the fact that it was raining + the weekend helped compound the misery.
One of the cemeteries which you passed by is a famous cemetery in Bucharest, with a lot of artists, writers and other famous people buried there. Other than that there isn't much to see at Sura Mare (which literally translates to The Big Barn) except more cemeteries. You have the one I mentioned, then next to it is the Catholic cemetery, on the other side also next to it you have a special cemetery where all the people who died in the 1989 revolution are buried (the subway station where you boarded from is called The Heroes of the Revolution - meaning the 1989 ). Across the street you have two more cemeteries, a jewish one and a lutheran one. I guess they should have called the place the Big Cross or the Big Burial Plaza instead of the Big Barn.

he got lucky there. On all of the other lines (24 and 45 especially) have terrible tracks literally breaking your back and trams come once every 30 minutes or more. He got lucky with the 1/10. The 44 would take him to a shady neighbourhood. The 11 as well, at one end is the same shady neighbourhood as the 44 (Giulești), and at the other end (Zețarilor) there is the biggest "slum" of Bucharest. The tram network is slowlyyyyy improved, but yeah... I personally loved the trams and if you want a decent experience, go on line 41, which is treated almost like a light metro (new, low-floor trams and frequencies at rush hours of 1-2 minutes + separated tracks from the rest of the network). Hope I explained the situation :)

For any travelers that go to Bucharest they have turist cards now for like 24 h , 72h . They have ones that include all transport bus, tram , metro and even train to the airport so if you plan to do a lot of trips they are a good option . They are also good on buses to near towns, villages that are part of the metropolitan area . We used it to go to the Therme. The Moovit app is very useful with info about transport and can help you navigate and show you the best route . I think on most transport you can also tap your own credit card on the bus, tram and pay with it . You can also pay with your phone , there is a pay app you can instal .

The trams and metro looked modern and clean. Pity that they had a technical problem on line #10!

    • @vali20vali20vali20
      @vali20vali20vali20 Год назад

Piata Sudului is a very congested intersection where they built a useless underpass on the wrong direction which only worsened the situation above, the actual space above ground is too tight due to this underpass and what happens is that a lot of cars end up stuck in the intersection in various ways and since tram routes also intersect there, a lot of trams can’t make the turn properly, they have to stop for stuck cars and end up being stuck themselves on the “separator” (the unelectrified portion of a line which allows it to intersect with another line). So they are left without current standing. In the past, the following tram would push the stuck one and move on, now they bought newer trams and do not employ the technique anymore, they have to call in and wait to be towed causing a big mess and a backlog of delays in the routes. It happens a few times every month but the management is so incompetent they can’t find a proper solution. The line from there toward the outskirts, to Popesti Leordeni/Romprim was closed 2 years ago because of a fire in one of the electrical substations and it just sits like that, unused, because they can’t do a weekend’s worth of repairs and get it back going. They now run diesel buses as replacement along the tram tracks there.

it was probably a tram on line 1 stuck. Although the lines are circular, they both turn around (same direction) at Șura Mare, which if one tram breaks, both lines are kinda dead. It's weird, but usually the system works.

I was only there for two or three days and on one of those days I was being taken out by a friend. Hint though: in Cluj (then) it was easy to find someone who spoke English, which had been rather more difficult in the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Hi Scott. Know that you do not need a ticket in Romania for the tram. You can pay with your VISA card at the tram device! I see you insist on eating pretzels! If you are hungry, come to my house and I will give you "sarmale, piftie, sausages" and whatever else you want. It takes 20 minutes from the northern train station by taxi! I think you didn't make a good travel plan! Merry Christmas with pretzels!
