I used to love Arthur Hailey's books, particularly "Hotel" which I read several times. He also wrote, with John Castle, "Flight into Danger", filmed as "Zero Hour" and remade as "Airplane". He seems to have disappeared into the same void as Alistair McLean and Hammond Innes. Have you ever read Robert van Gulik's Judge Dee books? Recommended if you're looking for something unusual. There are lots of them and they're very addictive.
Really enjoying the 'Sweetpea' series at the moment, by CJ Skuse - it's very different to the recently aired series (which I also enjoyed thoroughly though). Much, much darker, and highly enjoyable. Can recommend, if you haven't read any.
Great idea for a video. I actually own the same version of 'Brainchild', and I haven't read it either. I think I bought it sometime back in the 90's. Too often I tend to neglect books I own in favour of buying new books. Then I come back to one of them years or even decades later and wonder why it took me so long to get around to reading it.
I also have far too many books! We moved 9 years ago and stored a lot in boxes (since I was in college and wasn’t joy reading). Tons of 80s-90s pulp horror. Reminds me, I’m curious if you ever read the horror books by William W. Johnstone? He is most famous for his westerns that came after. They are campy and raunchy like most 80’s horror.
Wow, that copy of Brainchild brings back memories. I had the same copy on my shelf growing up. While I don't remember the story, I do remember not being thrilled after I finished it. World War Z, is an incredible book. It reads like a documentary. It's so much better than the movie (obviously). Dearly Devoted Dexter is just as enjoyable as the first one. While I didn't read"Angel of Death" I do remember reading the bestseller"The Eagle Has Landed" and frivolously turning the pages.
I’m currently reading Second Child by John Saul. I think it’s my fifth Saul book and so far I’m liking it but I’m only about a third through. I have Brainchild but haven’t gotten to it yet. I’m trying to work through all of his early books up to the mid-90s or so. His books tend to be okay but not great. He is great at dialogue and his books often take place in the early 60s and I think he has a great sense of that time period. What I don’t like is he tends to have a lot of child abuse and traumatic things happening to young children. He is a gay writer so you have to wonder if he had some childhood trauma of his own or just hates kids. Also there tends to be a lot of dialogue which as mentioned he does well but not a lot of tense action which I really like.
Nice wee "garage haul" that Rogue Trooper one is great... I think it's very collectable and hard to come by. So a nice bonus. Great videos, btw. I picked up a lot of recommendations from your post 👍😀
I love your book haul videos! My mom has a bunch of cheesy romance books from the 70's. I think I'll ask if I can borrow them. I'm not interested in reading any, I just want to laugh at the titles and covers. 😆
Ive just finished The Hellbound Heart after your recommendation and I really enjoyed it. Definitely gonna check the film out. Its my first clive barker curious which you think I should read next by him? Prefer novels or novellas to short story collections.
I really enjoy your videos! I understand you're trying to keep them to a reasonable length, so I get that you can't read the full descriptions from the backs of the books, but it would be great to hear a sentence or two about the plot or basic premise of each book, similar to what you did in this video for the Rogue Trooper book. Just my two cents. I recognize you already put in a lot of work on these and appreciate it.👍
You mentioned you have a new camera. Is there some kind of focus lock? As you hold up books, the focus zooms in and out. I know there's a way to fix it, but I'm not that tech savvy. 😊 Great garage haul. David Bowie named his son Zowie Bowie, but I think he goes by Duncan Jones now. I prefer Zowie. 😅
Colin Dexter - the person who watches television has a shelf full. He's read them all, so the poor things haven't moved for at least ten years. I should be kind and give one of them some fresh air in front of my eyeballs
I need to do a read what you own challenge too. 😒The copyright is 68, but that edition was published in 73. Booktubers who dont know their Roman numerals should be sin binned, red carded, and hauled over the coals 🛑🤭 Starter for 10 has intrigued me, but it's overall a good haul. I wish someone would novelise Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Crickey you said Zed - I can hear the keyboards pounding away now 🤭
Looks like Higgins died in 2022. Interesting guy, with a varied set of careers. He wrote 8 different series (the shortest had 2 books and the longest ran for 22 titles, but mostly they seem to have interested him for 4). Plus a whole slew of standalones. He also wrote as Harry Patterson, Martin Fallon (also the protagonist of one of his series), Hugh Marlowe, and James Graham. Hmm.
Pretty eclectic "haul" :). The "Dexter" TV show does have a pretty terrible ending (well, "first ending", there's a follow-up show too) _but_ it's pretty decent until about series 3 or 4 (IMO) so if you wanted to continue... (not read all of them but book-Dexter is quite a bit darker from what I remember, which makes sense - not only is TV for a broader audience, actually _seeing_ a character do something is different to reading it, much harder to maintain sympathy, even if it's happening to "bad guys" :).
Don't do audio for WWZ. I found out earlier this year while trying to read immersively that all the audio versions a abridged! 😱 I had only planned time for audio when I was going to read it, so I had to backburn it for later. Maybe this year.... 🤔
I'm wondering: For your shelves that are double stacked, are all the behind books ones that you have already read, or are there some unread titles hiding back there?
I´ve wanted to read Gretchen Felker-Martin for ages, I hope I´ll get to one of her books next year. Video looks nice here, did you use the new camera? Very pretty. ☺
Max Brooks World War Z is suppose to be great and much better than the movie. My dad read it years ago and spent weeks talking and about and when we saw the movie he went on and on about the differences and just how much cooler he thought the book was.
Hi serial killer. I live like a serial killer too. Got books in boxes, in the basement and closets. I live like a serial killer too.😊

Thank goodness you were hauling from your own garage! Had a moment of panic when I thought you had already read 100 books in November!
So pleased it's not just me with a garage overspill library!
Ha!
You will enjoy Pelecanos! He’s the writer foe the HBO series “The Wire”. He’s excellent.
Really enjoying the 'Sweetpea' series at the moment, by CJ Skuse - it's very different to the recently aired series (which I also enjoyed thoroughly though). Much, much darker, and highly enjoyable. Can recommend, if you haven't read any.
Really enjoyed this list of books you will read soon! Garage books = bonus score!!! 😊

Lots of love for World War Z in the comments!
I loved World War Z and I’m not a zombie fan but I loved the multiple perspectives
Rogue Trooper sounds awesome!
Looking forward to it!
You definitely gotta read World War Z!
Olly reads romance. That's a new one for me. Of course it's not a real romance novel unless the guy on the cover is not wearing a shirt. 😀
LOL

Oh really? I had no idea. Think it’s one I bought from the library.
Glad you’re enjoying the channel!
@CriminOllyBlog I didn't realise either. It was one of the recommendations I was talking about 😀 might have to buy it on kindle 🤪🤣
I love your book haul videos! My mom has a bunch of cheesy romance books from the 70's. I think I'll ask if I can borrow them. I'm not interested in reading any, I just want to laugh at the titles and covers. 😆
Ha! That does sound fun

Arthur Hailey is great, love "Hotel" and "Airport," hope you enjoy them!
I think I have Hotel somewhere too
Romance ? ....... Romance ? ......
What happened to Crime, Pulp & Horror ?
We're not losing you to the dark side are we ? 😂
Ha ha honestly I read a little of everything. But crime and horror are my first loves! ❤️🔪

Zee just sounds weird

Read Punish the Sinners by John Saul, you won't regret it. Nice Haul 😀
Pelecanos is fantastic.

Oh that sucks. Thanks for the head up!
Do consider watching rest ofDexter seasons. Like some books, the endings arent always fabulous. Plus there is a sequel which I need to watch
I'm wondering: For your shelves that are double stacked, are all the behind books ones that you have already read, or are there some unread titles hiding back there?
A mix!
I´ve wanted to read Gretchen Felker-Martin for ages, I hope I´ll get to one of her books next year. Video looks nice here, did you use the new camera? Very pretty. ☺
Yes, this is a new camera one!

Out of all the places you can do a book haul from…We have a Booktuber who thinks out of the garage.
😁😁
Hello. Have you read James Hadley chase. I read a ton of his books in the 1970s.
No, but I really want to
Cloudiness is gone👍
That might be because I filmed this one before yesterday’s. 😁
World War Z I have read and thought it was good.
