Teotihuacán Pyramids 2022: Best Mexico City Day Trip

- Teotihuacán is the best day trip from Mexico City. We share tips and tricks to make the most of your time exploring the pyramids. Don't want to mess with the public bus? Book a private van here: www.getyourguide.com/mexico-c...
In this video, we visit the Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon, Temple of Quetzalcóatl, and everything in between along the Avenue of the Dead.
First and foremost, can you still climb the pyramids of Teotihuacán? No. They closed the pyramids during Covid and decided to keep them closed to preserve them. We visited in the end of May 2022 and we asked a few different people and they all gave us the same answer: they have no intention of opening the pyramids back up. It's disappointing, but understandable.
The pyramids of Teotihuacán are about an hour outside Mexico City and easily accessible via the metro and a bus. You don't have to speak Spanish to use public transit in Mexico City - everything is pretty easy to figure out. And it's SO cheap. If you have questions about making the trip after watching the video, ask us in the comments. We'll help you through it.
There are guides available once you enter Teotihuacán, and they may be worthwhile. However, just know that nobody, including historians, really knows much about Teotihuacán. They're all just guessing. You can learn everything anybody knows in about 30 minutes at Museo Antropología's Teotihuacán exhibit.
Here are the tips we have to make sure you have a good experience while exploring the Pyramids of Teotihuacán.
1. Bring water - you can't buy it in the park
2. Bring snacks - also not available anywhere
3. Bring sunscreen - you're completely exposed the entire time
4. Bring cash - you'll need at least 200 pesos per person ($10 USD) for the metro, bus, and admission, plus small bills if you want to buy any souvenirs
5. Wear comfortable shoes - you walk A LOT
6. Beware of open-toed shoes - there are LOTS of fire ants along the Avenue of the Dead
7. There are three bathrooms, located at the Pyramids of the Moon and Sun, and at the Temple of Quetzalcóatl
8. Be nice to the vendors. They're nice and chill. Just smile and say no thank you.
9. Be there when it opens to avoid the crowds and the heat

We definitely recommend you visit the Pyramids of Teotihuacan. They're still worth it even if you can't climb the pyramids. The site is massive, the ruins are impressive, and it's so cool to be in a place with such history (even if we don't really know what that history is - it's amazing).

We want to thank you as we just visited Mexico City and traveled to teotihuacan pyramids following your instructions.
Glad it worked out. Are the pyramids still closed to people climbing them?
Mexico, a country full of culture and traditions, I loved your video, best regards from New York City.
Thanks for watching!
Welcome back! Delightful to see you guys again!
Thanks! Got busy with a big project at work so I had to take a break from editing, but I'm done with that now and we've got lots to share from our trip to Mexico now.

Great Video Im From Zacatecas city which i recommend you guys visit
We'd love to visit Zacatecas. Next time we're down there hopefully we can check it out.
Fantastic video guys thanks for the info
You're welcome! And thanks for the compliment. :)
@@PerfectLittlePlanet We should be this this Saturday. Love the info on the Metro and your quotes on the costs of the trip. Any more Mexico City videos?
@@calmanny This is the only long-form/informative video. We made a few more shorts just for fun. Happy to share more tips though. What neighborhood are you guys staying in?
@@PerfectLittlePlanet Centro, in one of the hotels. how's the weather is it raining?
Great video!
Thanks!
I was just thinking about you guys the other day hoping to see a new video.
It's good to see you alive walking the avenue of the dead.
Haha, yes, very much alive. Looking forward to sharing lots from this trip. Good to see you again!
This brings back some very old memories for me…I’ve only gotten to visit here once, Way back in December of 1979 when I was ten, but I remember it so very vividly! I was EXHAUSTED at the end of the day but it was SO VERY MUCH FUN! Thanks so much for this and for triggering such a nice blast of nostalgia from so long ago!
You're welcome and wow am I jealous! I didn't start traveling until college. I wish my parents took me to places like this when I was a kid!
@@PerfectLittlePlanet my folks honeymooned in Mexico City in 1964…the trip was a 15th anniversary present from my Dad to my Mom (plus they brought me along because they wanted me to learn stuff, I guess)
Thank you guys so much! I went today to the pyramids and everything is exactly how you said :) Only prices increased for few pesos which is negligible.
Glad most of the video is still relevant. Thanks for letting us know!
Hi Brian, another great informative video,. Glad things are slowly getting back to normal. When Isa was asleep on the bus was she snoring or was that the sound of the engine? The beard suit's you. When are Asia videos coming? Stay safe...
Good to see you, Martin. No, the snoring was coming from the guy behind me. I'll get to the Asia videos hopefully soon. And thanks for the beard compliment. 🧔
Just read climbing was allowed although restricted. Any other news?
Based on the actual government site, it's saying climbing is still not allowed: "Subida a las pirámides, cerrado temporalmente." See here: www.teotihuacan.inah.gob.mx/index.php
😭😭😭😭
@@hosbearanda889 yeah, that's how we felt. 😥
Why can't you climb the pyramids? When will they reopen for that??
If you do an image search for climbing the Pyramid of the Sun, you'll see why they stopped it. Long lines of people standing close together all the way up the stairs. Definitely not Covid-friendly. And now that the pandemic has subsided, I think it's just easier and cheaper for them to keep it blocked off completely. They may never reopen it.
@@PerfectLittlePlanet wow, that’s dispiriting
@@PerfectLittlePlanet NO ES POR EL COVID
ES POR QUÉ LAS ESTRUCTURAS ESTÁN DAÑADAS POR HABER PERMITIDO DEJAR SUBIR A LAS PERSONAS ESO ESTUVO MAL.
DE HECHO UN FAMOSO ARQUEÓLOGO EGIPCIO CUÁNDO VINO A MÉXICO CRITICÓ ÉSTE TIPO DE TURISMO ARQUEÓLOGO DICIÉNDO QUÉ NO ESTABA BIEN DEJAR SUBIR A LAS PERSONAS A LAS PIRÁMIDES POR QUÉ SE IBAN A DESGASTAR O DAÑAR TARDE O TEMPRANO Y ASÍ FUÉ.... NO ABRA REAPERTURA.
Thanks for showing the bus! And how to get there.
You're welcome! Hope you have a great trip!
Very helpful information. Looks cool, but if you can't climb the pyramids, not sure if it's worth taking a day trip for it. Hmm
We felt like it was still worth it just to see them and walk around the area.
Going next month, what time would you recommend heading over to be there early to get cooler weather? Also, do you know if tickets ever sell out?
Tickets to Teotihuacan do not sell out, but if you're taking the bus, that might. Shoot for getting on a bus around 8am, like we did. Teotihuacan doesn't open until 9am, so no use trying to go any earlier than that.
Do you know if the buses/entrance is available if it’s raining?
Yes. I haven't read or heard anything about limited service when it rains.
Hello, where did you guys stay at, any hotel recommended? This has made me excited to go!😊
We stayed in La Condesa, which is a fantastic little community with lots of restaurants and parks. We had asked a local friend where she recommended, and La Condesa and Roma Norte (right next to it) were at the top of her list. We stayed at Home Inn Suites, which was a pretty basic, no frills place. www.airbnb.com/rooms/49292690
I was supposed to go in June 2020 but Covid hit :(
Been holding off on going because you couldn't climb to the top but if they're keeping it closed I may as well book my trip soon.
Go for it. Still worth a visit.
Are they closing the pyramids permanently?
@@michaels33 It's possible, although I sincerely hope not forever.
Now u can go to visit the mammut museum, that its next to the new airport of AIFA.
Cool! I hadn't heard about that. Hopefully we can check it out next time we're in Mexico City. Thanks for the tip!
I am trying to assess the safety risk of driving in Mexico. We’re traveling soon and we rented a car and we’re planning on driving from Mexico City to San Juan Teotihuacán, any insight or tips?
We didn't drive, so we can't offer any insights on the rental car process. But the roads are fine. Mainly highways the whole way. We had quite a bit of traffic as we were leaving Mexico City, but it was normal traffic - nothing chaotic like southeast asia or anything. Have fun!
2:02 Andean music?
Yeah, the band is from Chile. Nobody knows what kind of music the people of Teotihuacan listened to, but I figured the Andean vibe could be close.
It's beautiful video! Thanks to the author of the channel for this fascinating video! It is interesting to see how people live in other countries! It is very important to know foreign languages on such trips. I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!
For sure, don't let not knowing the language stop you from traveling to a place. People are friendly and helpful everywhere. Learning a few phrases like thank you, hello, and excuse me go a long way.
