    The thing about the Tacoma is that it looks so much more athletic than the other trucks in this class ( except for maybe the frontier)

    • @crusherman96
      @crusherman96 2 года назад +2

      The frontier pretty much copied and pasted this design. Many times I can't tell between the trucks at least in video. In person it's a little bit easier to tell judging by the whopping 3 I've seen on the road since it's redesign.

  • @TheJoncic
    @TheJoncic 2 года назад +11

    Nice review. Yep, the 3.5 with the manual is geared slightly lower than the auto and thus is less lethargic. This at the expense of taller gears and highway fuel economy. Not a powerhouse by any means but more tolerable than the slush box. Shame they never offered a manual with the double cab long bed. That would be my ideal build.

    • @Clanc54R
      @Clanc54R 2 года назад +1

      Although, the automatic struggles to maintain it's 6th gear at highway speeds. Making it usually a 5 speed when gas mileage matters. When my 19 6MT was stock I could get 23 - 25 mpg highway. I completely agree, they're definitely not power houses, but it's at least sufficient unlike the auto which feels very anemic.

    There's usb ports inside the center console. Rear seats will fold down completely but you have to take the head rest out of each back seat. There's a place on the back of the seat (2 holes) where you can store the headrest

    My best friend actually just got a TRD one without the pro, but manual. He let me drive it and Kirk pretty much nailed this one on the head. The transmission feels great, definitely made for cruising though, clutch grabs high up on the pedal and is smooth. Fortunately and unfortunately has a lot of lockout situations though to protect the trans. For example if you are trying to bang through gears 1st through 3rd will not allow it when you are revving them out. Of course the rest will and the tacoma does boogie in those gears, no worries you can still dump the clutch lol and the auto LSD does quite well getting traction. Definitely will spin a bit in turns revving out first and and second, definitely due to the gearing Kirk was talking about, it does feel quite torquey.

    All jokes aside I love manuals and have had a few but traffic really ruins the experience ESPECIALLY stop and go traffic. I’d even settle with 15-20mph traffic because then I can keep it in gear. Anyway, I’ve been itching for a manual and now that I don’t live in the boroughs I was thinking of getting one. There’s still traffic on the outskirts too but not nearly as bad. Nice truck and good review!

    If Frontier and Tacoma are mid size, is the Hi-Lux, the Mitsubishi Triton and the Isuzu D-Max considered small size? I know these last three pickups are not in the US market, but these are off roading legends in the rest of the world.

    That's funny You're one of the first people I've heard say that the truck likes to be driven around 2-3,000 RPMs You're exactly right that's what I noticed it's slow but that's where the truck feels like it just cruises when you start getting on it more yeah the truck will go but something just doesn't feel right well at least not as comfortable. It's a clunky powertrain tho, I bought mine brand new with 16 mi so I guess it's the way it's supposed to be and I've been revving mine up a little bit because I'm breaking the motor in I change the oil the first time at 545 mi & change it the 2nd time @ 2,500 miles along with the transmission fluid & swap it to amsoil... Toyota wants you to wait till like 10,000 mi or some crazy shit for an oil change by then I will be ready for my 3rd oil change... From then on it's every 10K if I'm not mistaken & I will change it 1X in between

    That wireless charger is utterly pointless. The charger gets too hot to charge more than 3-5% before shutting off. On top of that, the transmission is right underneath it and on long drives it warms up without the charger even on so it's not a good place to put your phone.

    Typically I’m an advocate for any manual vehicle, but this isn’t one of them. The engine feels extremely lethargic. Revs are so slow, but the engine makes a ton of noise. The manual is rubbery with throws as long as an old tractor. You cannot smoothly shift this without complete concentration, and this is coming from someone who has been daily driving manuals for 20+ years. I’m happy Toyota at least offers the manual, unfortunately this one is terrible.

      Is this by any chance the 2.7 liter 2TR series 4 cylinder engine being used as the Tacoma base trim? This engine series is the successor to the decades long R series engines used with Toyota pickups, vans and cars for nearly 40 years, and is only a RWD application. TR engine is used by Hiace, Innova, Fortuner, Hilux and Prado, none of whom are sold in the US. A brutal bulletproof workhorse engine that is only meant to get the job done. You don't expect Lexus refinement here unlike the 3.5 liter V6 option which is also used on Lexus.
