Another CS2 youtuber called infrastructurist does jetty-type things with quays, if you watch one of his vids it's kind of complicated to set it up but it looks very clean when it's done. I thought maybe you'd be interested in doing that instead of using land for the parts that jut out into the water. Love how the city is coming along!

I love the idea of you gradually adding mods as the city grows, the same way new york grew around and adapted to new technologies being invented. Watching the growing pains of a sleepy city installing telegraph lines and railroads to a metropolis developing highways and airports is what gives its neighborhoods and the city as a whole character.
It would be interesting to look at a build and see areas that were developed before move it, intersection marking tool, etc contrasted with areas that had room to develop around these mods.

@@twodollarstwenty The road tools mod probably wouldn't break your game, since all it does is expand the road tools to control things like quays spawning. I think the only "mod" right now that risks breaking the game is dev tools.

I really hope we get more road types, but until then it would be interesting to see you using the smallest road!
I agree with the concrete-problem for the city with the lack of trees, but I also think it is partly because the standard road is so massive with sidewalk, parking in both directions and two-way road with distintcitve markings. Thats not the usual neighbourhood road.

  • @freshprince925

The roads in New Jersey (and most New England locales) follow the historical trading routes that colonists and naitives used when the area was being colonized. Essentially a road exisits as the fastest route between two points on a critical trade route, and the network expanded from there.
That kind of focus on placing destinations and building the roads around them, makes it feel like they were built there to connect these places, and it really adds to the realism of cities in this game.

Kennedy Boulevard was inaugurated in 1895 as Hudson Boulevard. It was the result of three decades effort's worth of trying to connect the very tip-top of the Hudson County line with the bottom of the Bayonne peninsula. It existed in sections here and there before it was all connected into one road, hence the bendiness. It was intended for pedestrians, horse carriages, and bicycles only, banning all commercial traffic.
In real life, Kennedy Boulevard and Bergenline Avenue (the busier, commercial corridor in that area) are busy with buses and jitneys. They are very ripe for subway expansions. There have been plans here and there, but nothing has ever come out of it.

I'm all for using mods. The anarchy mod has a bulldozer tool that lets you remove surfaces from assets, so the pavement and grass on the elementary school you added can be removed, making it look less square (obviously the footprint remains the same tho). I also think you'd love incorporating Dev Mode, it allows you to paint in surfaces like you were trying to do with the ore mine in the previous New New Dollarton, and even add in invisible roads with parking to create custom parking lots that fit more naturally in the city! You can check out Sully's video on creating custom parking lots to see him talk and demonstrate these tools.

Jersey City, along with a lot of other cities in the area, Newark, Patterson, Elizabeth, so on, are all run by the city structure of government but function as suburbs of New York. They also incorporated other towns that were once around it, creating neighborhoods within the city. New York is the greatest example, as the borough of Brooklyn was once its own city before being incorporated as a borough. This leads to road networks not creating a perfect grid, as they weren’t planned out to be on the same grid

    Mods I'd recommend:
    * Extended Road Upgrades: Makes creating quays and cut & fill so much easier
    * Anarchy: You already know what this does
    * Extra landscaping tools: Easier to create surfaces without going into dev UI. Can also place down resources wherever you want
    * RICO: Can place any building you want anywhere, regardless of zoning. Really good for when you need to fill a spot and zoning isn't cooperating.
These four IMO will provide the most 'bang for buck' in terms of getting the most capabilities with the fewest mods possible. I've had these mods on my main save for a good amount of hours now and have faced no crashes or anything like that.

  • @johnlain7309
    @johnlain7309 5 месяцев назад

I know you said that you don't really like dev mode, but I think it would solve some of your problems with very little risk. The pavement tool allows you to extend the ground textures and it is really easy to fill in those awkward gaps like the one by the elementary school. Also, having the ability to look through all the assets in the game is so so nice and you spend way less time fighting with zoning. You mentioned wanting a lot of mixed use, and I think it really helps to look through all the options because some of the mixed use of different sizes look very awkward next to each other.

I feel that quality of life mods are (currently) the only need for mods until we know their safer (such as the three you mentioned). People are talking about a tree controller mod, which sounds better than only adult trees, as hopefully you can adjust the tree age/aging. Also, the comments Ave mentioned Extended Road Upgrades which might make placing roads on/in terrain easier. Which there is a time ad place for both of these, I think.
As for a mod(/update) I think we should get, which CPP mentioned pretty early on, is a road naming system similar to that of CS1, with the ability to adjust where a road name begins and ends. This would help a bit with world building without messing with the game mechanics. Also, here’s my basic list of mods/updates (we had in CS1 but not CS2) I have from watching y’all: Zoning Adjuster, Stop sign for individual roads control, Road naming controls (as I mentioned), Historic Buildings, and Changing road trees.

So just using to be to able to place buildings and roads and trees exactly where you want them is really useful. I'd like to see either a mod or DLC that introduces motorsports into the game. Like you could have a Formula 1 style grand prix event come into the city and race either on the city streets or a dedicated racetrack. And you could also have different types of racing events like either stockcars, GT3, Formula 1, etc. And have the ability to create your own race team which will boost the city's happiness when they win a race/championship.
I also hope they start reintroducing features from the previous game like things from the DLCs in Cities Skylines 1 and add them to CS2 in future updates.

Two "dream mods" I've been thinking about lately, and idk if I have the skill to pull them off but I'll probably give them a shot some time.
The first is Road Geometry Options and would intrduce some aditional behaviour to roundabouts. Cul-de-sacs when a roundabout has only one attached road, which are zoneable and the roundabout island is replaced with flat road surface. When a roundabout has exaftly two roads attached 180° apart it would become a slow point which would also be zonable, but the geometry would adjust so the road isn't wider, replacing the curcle of a roundabout with an elipse, if that makes sense. It would also introduce turning lanes as an upgrade option replacing parking or centre medians.
The other mod is Frontage Zoning. Instead of zoning based on squares, zone along the side of the road and the buildings will fill in wherever they fit. I actually have an idea of how I could make this work, and its totally a bodge. Based on how the signature buildings change the zone of squares underneath them, there should be a way to make growables behave the same way. It should only require rewriting the games building spawn logic, building despawn logic, and zoning ui.
Ideally though, since this is a dream mod, it'd also allow zoning types to overlap so you could more realistically upzone large areas.

    - they don't take long enough to grow,
    - you can only place you saplings or very small trees,
    - and they can't become/look old enough.
If it was possible to place trees of any age, you could immediately make places look great instead of having to wait a bunch of years. And if that was possible then it would also be cool if trees actually needed 50 years to grow fully up, because right now the trees are grown up in a few years which is not realistic and also makes every part of the city look kinda the same age.
To really make trees a key factor to realism, they should make it possible that trees grow slower, can be placed at any age and also can become really really old, like 150 years or so and also look old.

yay for mods! also while i love these vidoes i certainly havent forgotten about the miami and oceania series, i know continuing 3 series simultaneously is a massive hassle but could we get some sort of send offs for them? or do you plan on still continuing them?

CS has always had a problem with gaps and corners, so it would be amazing if there was a mod that essentially created corner and weird shaped buildings to fill awkward lots. This would probably be incredibly difficult idk about game design

I was hesitant on mods to but I caved in and downloaded thunderstore. I can't go back to vanilla. Things like Anarchy for placing trees and the Extended Road upgrades is just essential.

i think that introducing mods is perfectly fine but making sure to only use the necessary ones until they become a bit more concrete and official

You could easily solve the Problen with the School, to fill up the triangular space by using Clip Surface in the dev mode. I think that is much more vanilla and much more easy than using mods. I do it all the time and it just makes the game much much more fun. 👍

I'm enjoying Skylines 2 without the mods. Waiting for Paradox mods. Rational or not I don't want to invest the time into a city use the mods and then something happens and the mod isn't compatible and I am potentially left with a broken city. I have never been big on mods though. Great videos! Excited to see your city grow.

11:30 because New York is one of Americas oldest cities. Its like Europe, just kind of everywhere. Before we started to separate ourselves with grids and everything else. Like Boston

Yes! You should use mods from the thunder store I’ve been using the store for weeks now and have had no problems at all with it. Except it would not allow me to download your map so I’ve been playing on dolphins bay(from the thunder store) also it would be awesome if you made a short vid showing how to manually install your map without thunder store.

ive always wanted a mod that can export the city into other 3d software. Cos then you can import it into driving games like assetto corsa or beamng. I think driving around your own city is the best way to appreciate it

the two mods i'd get is Anarchy and ExtraLandscapingTools (includes a surface painter) had no issues what so ever running them for 40ish hours, but once i introduced some more mods my game has crashed once in the last 10 hours of my city

Hey Two Dollars- love your videos... I'm honestly sad to hear you say you're not going to focus on prop placement with Anarchy - the detail work is why I've watched you for years! Of course I am not going anywhere but hope you get back to your roots!

Would like to see CS2 introduce a feature that allows a user to import a real life road layout as a custom map then Users can “fix” traffic. Could also generate revenue as a standalone product sold to governments for traffic studies or spend estimates if the user was allowed to input custom costs

Super easy to use. I cannot imagine to not have mods. Just use ones that do not affect game mechanics. Line tools, extended road tools are a must. Plus Lots of others

Some of the mods aren't too bad. The line tool "shouldnt" break anything as it's not really changing the base game much it just allows speedy placement. I guess the same can be said about the extra road tools. The traffic light mod might have problems but so far so good.
The main problem I have is that I spend all this time placing trees and within 3 or so years of game time they all due (when using the tree mod that allows placing adult trees). Even in vanilla they all eventually die so if you place a lot within a short time you will eventually have to replant them. If you're like me and get pretty particular about your trees/forest this is a huge pain. I'm not sure if the mod that stops the tree aging stops them from dying, or if any mods extend the life but in vanilla, the tree mod that allows you to select age, and with the line tool, they die. And if placing adult trees that's pretty fast
