  • If your arm goes to sleep at night (dead arm) we put often put it down to a lack of circulation. Interestingly, it's actually due to something else entirely - something you can control and stop from happening in the future!

    The first time my arm fell asleep like that, I screamed so loud. I thought something had happened to my arm that was irreversible. It felt like I was holding someone else's hand.

    Interesting, thanks! I have started again to sleep on harder platform (on a mattress on a floor) and I have got this dead arm more often than normally. When I use same mattress on a softer bed, I get maybe twice or thrice a year this dead arm, but on floor sleeping I have got this maybe twice or thrice already within couple of months.
    I have thought that it must be something related to muscles stifness since when I sleep on a floor I feel still somehow "better", more refreshed and muscles feel less tight. I still have neck and upper body stifness (since I work on computers all days), but sleeping on floor seems to do some kind of massaging maybe to my body, dunno about it, but at least it seems to make me feel better or it seem so, but now I more often have got this dead arm.
    Maybe when muscles are less stiff in future hopefully I do not get this dead arm either :)

    sometimes when I wake up specifically my entire right arm up to the shoulder cant feel anything, not even the static feel. I cant physically move it and can pinch it without feeling anything. Its literally just a dead weight strapped to the side of my torso for 1-3 minutes

    I wake up most mornings with one dead arm. It can be the right or left. I can never get the light quick enough to see if my arm is white. It comes back after a few seconds but when i try to move my arm it swings with force into different positions rather than moving smoothly throughout all positions. This has been worrying me a bit as i have health anxiety and am always worried I have a brain tumor.
    It gets that hot tingling feeling when it comes back as if blood were returning. I’ll have to try the massage ball but if you’ve got any further thoughts?

    Pins and needles at night are caused by not breathing freely while in deep sleep.
    Lay in a supported position that does not constrict airways.

    • @YourWellnessNerd
      @YourWellnessNerd  6 месяцев назад

      Respectfully Rosie, there is more going on behind the scenes than just abnormal breathing. The body should be functioning well enough so that when breathing can’t be optimal other musculoskeletal issues don’t pop up.

      As for me I found Buteyko breathing extremely helpful for getting rid of brainfog. That’s basically exhaling very slowly. But then - my arms and hands are getting numb at the same time. Which seems to occur more and more. And by now even sometimes without exhaling very slowly.

    Thank you! For me, it tends to happen when I sleep on my side. I’ve been trying to get myself to sleep on my back but it’s definitely not easy to break a sleeping pattern Ive had all my life. What are your thoughts on sleeping posture? Do you have a video on this? Do you think if I do this exercise I can still sleep on my side curled up in a ball or that for long term relief it’s better to keep trying to get myself to sleep on my back?

    • @YourWellnessNerd

      Hey Shelley! Not sure if youve seen it already but there is one about how to find your best sleeping posture :). I cant be too specific over the internet but often I find the night time issues are more often a consequence of the day time stuff like postures and shapes. Its pretty hard to expect someone to change their sleeping habits when theyre asleep as we all move and roll so much throughout the night!

    How can we begin to prevent the stiffness and tightness in the neck in the first place?

    • @YourWellnessNerd
      @YourWellnessNerd  Год назад +1

      Everyone is potentially a little different, but from a general perspective most accrue those restrictions from less active, more sedentary things we do, and how we do them. Looking down a lot for work, reading, watching tv in a recliner, using a phone etc

      @@MrX-vk1jlWell, I have again started to sleep on a floor with some kind of mattress. I have noted that I got much more often dead arm now, but still I feel better. I have very stiff mucles on upper body and neck anyway, because I work on computers but I hope that when I sleep more on floor on a mattress this will help my body to soften my muscles :)

      Hey! You're right, its impossible to tell over the net. However I would always assess the neck, sesrch for those stiff joints, and get my patients to at least try the neck exercise and see what happens. Id genuinely expect most to be neck related - and postural related for that matter, but you have to keep an open mind.

    • @YourWellnessNerd
      @YourWellnessNerd  3 года назад +2

      If its scaring you, its best to go and have someone assess your neck so they can tell you exactly why its happening. For a lot of people it can be a consequence of that very neck dysfunction you referenced and nothing to be concerned about, however the only way to reassure you is to have it specifically assessed. That way they can tell you whats going on!
