Why would anyone talking about Kamal / Rajni / Vijay Sethupadi to do Rajan's role. I don't know how they would do but Amir has done it so perfectly - I could not imagine anyone doing it better than Amir.. A complete surprise for me as I did not know Amir as an actor. The whole movie's cast has brilliantly been chosen.. First Andrea looked out of place in this movie.. with her look, color and class.. Even her performance is convincing..

If you think about it, Pudhupettai is more of a tragedy. It's the downfall of Kokki Kumar.

  • @ranjithkumar3480
    @ranjithkumar3480 5 лет назад +2

Pudhupettai is more a psychological and philosophical take on how a person behaves with the power he holds. But vadachennai is about a community of people who are affected by the changes in the local politics and the power struggle between the various power centres and the greed that drives them and also of basic human emotions like anger, pride, greed, repentance, morality, loyalty and disgust at various levels. I personally think as cinema hands down pudhupettai is miles ahead of vadachennai which could have been something on par with game of the thrones given the time to establish the characters and dilemmas.I really wish to see the long cut and also vadachennai being made into a Netflix or Amazon series.

Even though this was a 2.5 hour film, it still felt too short. Not everything was fully explained or was scanned over too quickly, not giving us enough time to breath what the characters did and who did what. The narrations that come did anything but help the film. Overall it was still a great film. Would love to watch a 5 hour version. Hell if this movie was 3+ hours long, people would have still watched it. No need to cut it so short.
Also agree with the cinematography, it was amazing. Expect for the overly dark shots, which was hard to see, especially the fight scenes. Although very well choreographed, the lighting was distracting. But still overall a very well shot film that perfectly integrates with the story.
The non-linear narration only bothered me when it suddenly cut to Rajan's story, which too unfortunately ended too quickly, not giving enough time with that character. The casting was great. But Andrea could have had some makeup to look old or a little fair skinned, just to integrate more into the setting.
Btw, the worst aspect of the movie is the old lady prophecizing that Dhanush will come to help Andrea. It made little sense in such a realistic film. The conversation between Dhanush and Andrea in the end also felt quite out of place. Maybe if the 5 hour version comes out somehow it'll all make sense. After the theatrical run, hope to see that version released on RUclips, just like how Rajamouli released Bahubali on RUclips after its theatrical run.

I think having the hero persona works in Vada Chennai because I feel that Vetrimaaran was trying to convey the message of gentrification. Even though there are plenty of films that deal with that theme, it is the display of the city in an authentic yet positive manner. It is very easy to label Vada Chennai area as the city of pimps and thugs, but Vetrimaaran really shows what the area is like.

It says "Anbu nanban indru maanda naal" I may be wrong, it may not be pointing to Anbu (dhanush character). Still I think it would be Dhanush only.

      They don't show thambi wife.
But indirectly says Kala is daughter of thambi.
In a scene thambi calls Anbu to his home to tell that give back the sewing machine to the owner. There thambi says to his daughter (KALA) to give flowers to her mom.
Hence thambi's wife is been told indirectly.

Vadachennai is a really good movie. Yes. It’s very raw however pudhupettai is another class, errs in the side of more sensational bang on moments. I hope the next two parts of Vadachennai bring it close to pudhupettai but for me, not this one yet. I hope there are some really amazing moments like pudhupettai on the next one.
The best gangster film in Tamil cinema is still pudhupettai. I would highly recommend anyone thinking otherwise to at least rewatch it. It was way tougher film for Dhanush, this was such a breeze for him I should say.
Also one of the criticism for me in this movie or some continuity in edits. A scene where the brother in law slaps dhanush father in law has the brother in law suddenly looking some where else to previous scene. Wrong continuity. Also the film definitely feels cut abruptly and jumped right in. Some scenes feel choppy. This is by no means technically great ... not sure why the film was shot with much longer scenes and then cut later. Vetrimaran can be a great director but planning goes a long way.

Stunning camerawork by Aravind Krishna.. Brilliant acting by all the actors.. Selvaraghavan.. the genius behind that master piece.. Still waiting for a movie which can come close to Pudhupettai

BTW why have some premonitions or preconditions that this is a Brother Dhanush film? He never had equal footage to first of all have it so easy in this movie??? Avare solla la? Neenga en solrenga!??? Thus Your first assumption is wrong.
A gangster is NOT born with outcomes of just one murder. Whomever it may be! May be NOT even OUR Pudhupettai 2005 Kokki KUMAR with just one murder of ANBU!?? So be it. How foolish of you to compare Pudhupettai with Vada Chennai!!!???😢 Had you watched ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA..... you would never have found fault in Vada Chennai! Our unexposere to Great films can't be an excuse to our movie watching limitations. Please watch that movie which I had mentioned.
Flimsiest of the grounds- to make a point of choppy editing in Vada CHENNAI. That's the prospective bride groom's Dad's evil laughter had 2 cuts. Shabaaa. There are too many Edit errors in this movie. Kindly you point out.
Amongst all.. your comparison of VADA CHENNAI to our same Brother DHANUSH's movie speaks volumes about your understanding. Even DHANUSH won't approve of your coment. Flimsy grounds.
No offence meant.. Watch more and more movies . Art movies. I am not an AD thambi ...

Vada Chennai surpasses Pudupettai and Nayakan. A lot of things in Pudupettai weren't done well like the fight sequences, it's structured like most come up gangster movies that we've seen. Nayakan we've already seen movies like The Godfather which are quite similar. Vada Chennai is the best in terms of story, characters and world building. A proper Epic to represent Tamil cinema.

    • @beamboy420
      @beamboy420 5 лет назад +3

A A A A A A sir you are the one who is assuming a lot. Did I ever say in my comparison that dhanush is the factor for me to compare these two movies? With all due respect, I said it was such a breeze for dhanush meaning the script doesn’t even offer the same scope of character arc to showcase his acting capabilities. How can this even be as good as if not better than pudhupettai is what I meant.
The reason i compare is because It’s same Genre, pudhupettai for me is hands down the best gangster film of Tamil cinema, I can write an essay why and send it your way. I wish I had the time. One small example is like bharadwaj said in the video , it’s like breaking bad but the difference being , the character becomes bad because of some kind of power trip , but has no higher cause like breaking bad for example. It’s very unique and so many other great points of the film. Please rewatch pudhupettai, it stands out as a proud Tamil gangster film.
I can say one thing, I have seen as much or if not way more movies than you. I live in canada currently but not so long ago I wanted to become a director because i had so much passion for movies. You could say I studied film making for three years , bsc electronic media at Hindustan college. My professor is a famous RUclips reviewer , Jackie cinemas and he has introduced me to so many amazing western, Korean, Iranian films and so many other languages. Sometimes I don’t even know what language film I have seen, if it’s with subtitles and the reviews are great I see it. Countless movies. Hell I have seen movies in my college classes man, have you !?
On a side note I am no wanna be FileMaker , I realized I had technicality but not creativity and moved on to a different life. Several of my colleagues are making it in film industry now and one of them who studied the same course as me , my senior is director vignesh. Although it may feel like I am bragging here, your ignorant assumption is very very insulting and I have to tell you who is the ignorant person here!
Again I can name ten gangster movies like once upon a time in America , scarface , godfather , good fellas, departed , pulp fiction etc but that’s Hollywood , and other gangster films in some other languages that are amazing but it’s really weird to compare Tamil gangster movie to those movies, you simply can’t, and you shouldn’t. Tamil films have their identity and it should be that way.
Another thing , I never notice continuity issues, I haven’t ever noticed one before but that one scene was so jarring , how can a film team allow one shot of actor looking at point A and then suddenly next cut to point B , even to normal audience it’s jarring.
Vetrimaran is great director , vada Chennai is great film but his best till date for me is visaranai, world class film and this one is not even close. Despite doing so much hard work and research before film it seems like he lets things flow too much on the sets and relies too much on improv, assuming based on 5 hours of footage .. that’s like running the race very hard till finish line and then rolling to the finish line. With that kind of work he didn’t and he can’t surpass films like pudhupettai or may be nayagan. It would be an insult for other great directors like him in Tamil cinema.
After reading the comments , I need to rewatch nayagan .. I have seen it very long ago. But in so many different ways pudhupettai will always remain the best gangster Tamil film. Unless vetrimaran does something special on second and third instalment
Vetrimaran I wish changes his ways a little bit and goes to shoot with a more planned script instead of fine tuning it all along.
To me contrary to popular opinion , it’s not in his class and he is doing disservice to the actors who are putting their heart and soul in film just like him.
Also ,How a gangster is made a gangster is a creative choice, it’s the audience who see the script that need to understand and appreciate it. It doesn’t by any means undermine pudhupettai. He didn’t become a gangster because he killed his dad, Anbu or many others? Did you even watch the film !!? He was beggar after and then he became a gangster by trying to survive. If reality and rawness is the only measure of great film what about great fantasy, science fiction and so many films. May be documentary is something that better suits your expectations. You can watch tons that are better in showing gangsters.
In vadachennai suddenly in the end dhanush changes from a person who doesn’t stand up for the right thing because of loyalty , with scenes establishing that he only cares for himself being a carom player and his career changing his entire life motive to save the town because of one dialog from Aishwarya !? , do what you feel is correct !? Where are the scenes that show that dhanush does care about the society a little bit or where the defining moment that makes him that way !? Absolutely nothing. Not poor writing. Poor planning.
The only reason I appreciate this film is there is footage missing somewhere that explains this. It pains really not to see vision of the director in its entirety because of sheer sloppiness
Vetrimaran needs to first get to the bench mark he set for himself before aiming for others. Despite being a great film it falls short of being greatest because of him and only him.
Let me tell you one thing. Even dhanush is definitely feeling the same way now. Can bet my life savings on it.

I dont understand how Dhanush suddenly became a powerful gangster/hero by the end and manages to fend off the attack by the one of the villain's gang. And how that weird lady appears just to phropecize Dhanush as the revenge taker/prodigal son of Rajan. One more issue i have with this film is casting Andrea as Chandra, she didnt fit the role and her madras slang was hilariously awful. The best part of the movie is the soundtrack and screenplay. 8:55 agree with you here, the cinematography is not pretentious or self aware to make it look more cinematic/artistic. It sets the realistic tone of the movie.

Anbu doesn't want to be a gangster for that only he speaks to guna at climax that" let me go" instead of "common let's see" this proves anbu just spoke for people and his motive is not to defeat anyone . And he also says to guna " I spoke. For people that's it . U should have done but I did" but Im mediately people stars supporting it and bunch of people starts to walk behind him.. though anbu grows by seeing Rajan he never wants to be. a gangster. I think Anbu's courage to stand up against Guna wasnt well developed. Up until that community meeting scene, he was thankful/loyal to Guna and was only able to back stab Senthil that too failing to kill him. But in the next few scenes hes shown as a strategic combatant who manages to fight 10 guys and a physically stronger guy(senthil's brother in law)

Anbu's courage to stand up to Guna comes from Padma, when he is in the dilemma of wanting to help the guy who saved his life and save the people of his village, she gives him that clarity. Courage is not something you develop, it's simply a choice.

So u don't feel any problem with the story at all......sombu thukra mathiri irukka......atleast accept that some negatives r there in the movie.....like the casting of Ameer for Rajan, which definitely didn't look convincing at all

  • @Indians30

Ameer character was the only exciting factor in Vada Chennai. Otherwise it is an average movie

Dont overhype this usual revenge movie..its creating a bad impact against north madras people..there are many good things to talk about north madras apart from rowdysm... ...

That way even Subramaniapuram was overhyped usual revenge movie which created a bad impact about madurai people and even Madurai has good things to talk about

Subramaniapuram was different at that time. But north madras being depicted this way has been a common thing in tamil cinema except for Madras.

Are u sure about what u are said now? A Usual revenge movie.....if that so just tell me what ll be the ending and who will kill whom in the end.....???u can't.....the narration of the movie is different......and it's a triology series....we people know what is reality and what is in the film....it's just a film promoters and you tube channels creating a temptation over this film by promoting idiotic stuffs about north Chennai that you fear off ...blame the promotion not the film!!!

Sri Vatsan i liked polladhavan and visarani..both are superb movies..but aadukalam and vada chennai useless revenge story..we can easily predict..i predicted that andrea would be the black sheep...whats great deal..portraying a northmadras girl like a prostitute who would share the bed with the person who killed her husband, just to take revenge, is too too much..please dont overhype this useless movie..slowly the collection of the movie will drop..now i started getting negative wom from many.m

a a who stopped u to talk good things about madurail..even subramaniapuram was also a over hyped useless revenge story...ask vetrimaran to take movies like ratsasan..merku thodarchi mazhai vikram vedha..etc..
