MAN.........you are fast! We are so lucky to have sombody like you...for the past 2 weeks ive asked a few youtubers questions and havent gotten 1 reply. AGAIN.....THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!
I know I'm literally like 5years 2 late for this video, but I'm trying to make a plan to start my very 1st planted tank, as of right now I've got a 20gallon tank with a male Betta and 6 Neon Tetras and I really really want to get live plants for them instead of the fake 1s what kinda substrate is best?
CAN YOU MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT SUBSTRATE? I am building a tank with live plants and i used regular gravel but im thinking about changing out the substrate but there are so many and some raise ph and some dont and i need help!!!
Just want to thank you for all of your vid’s. My husband and I️ have learned so much from them and we’ve rewatched many. Just thanks to you (and your fam for letting you have the time) for sharing with everyone your advice and experience. 👍🦋
Thanks for sharing this! I'm just planning to get my first tank (112l/30 gal) and I'm trying to decide how to make it work on 'low-tech' conditions. What puzzles me the most is this: is gravel alone sufficient enough for the plants you mentioned in the video? And second, how should one choose the amount of seedlings to plant in a starter tank? They are going to spread, aren't they? I know fish keepers use a formula for the max amount of seedling per tank, but what would you advice to the novice?
Hey, I heard plants like anubus would rather root on wood and large stones, does that STILL MEAN THEY CAN IN GRAVEL? just NOT AS WELL? I accidentally turned on caps and am too lazy to fix it, don't judge.
You could start with 8 and see how it goes. They will fight and pair up if you get male and female. While they are called angels they are pretty aggressive at times but should be fine
Thanks man. Your Video has steered me in the right direction. I recently planted some plants from Petco and Petsmart. Neither are doing well. Probably by design. Keeps folks coming back for more replacements. I am heading to an actual aquarium store in Wake Forest tomorrow to see if they have your list in stock. Thought it might be good to support local, true aquarium supply stores are getting few and far between. I will keep watching, keep up the good work.
Tank looks fantastic, great video with explanations on these beginner plants. Just bought myself an aquarium and was humming and harring between live and fake. After seeing this vid , deffo going live , cheers
Hi. do you think it is suitable to use a Koralia Wave Maker for a low tech 50G planted tank. I have 2 Blue Rams, 4 Rosy Barbs, 1 Bristlenose Catfish, and 2 Red Finned danios. Plant species include thus far Anubias Nana, and Amazon Sword. Thankyou.
Oh thats is awesome I have wanted to do a planted tank but I did not want to do the co and fertilizers and soil and sand so knowing that any substrate will work I am going to have to fet me some of these plants thank you for your help I know I ask a lot of questions but how else am I going to learn lol thank you
So high tech means ??? I have a regular fish tank with simple lighting... what do I need to start. Can I just put the 29gal by the a shaded window? Bamboo?
I've got a wendtii that's been growing 6 month's its now triple the size and the center piece plant. I've got val growing in backleft to center. Starting to add bacopa moneywort in right back to center. I'm going to add dwarf amazon sword mid ground just for fun and random variety thats more natural to the fish
Hi. You mentioned your jungle val was the Italian species. Unlike the Americana. My question is do you use any Seachem ferts in this tank? I've heard Seachem ferts will burn jungle val. Thanks in advance.
It looks like black gravel. Is there any specific size gravel to keep the dirt from coming through? I was thinking to go with Imagitarium Black Aquarium Sand or Imagitarium Black Aquarium gravel. Perhaps the sand would be to fine. You can see it on petco website.. thanks for all the help!
for the jungle val, can you cut it realy short and put it in the front too as like a carpet of grass, or is that too short for it? if not, do you have any other beginner plants that grow as a carpet of grass that looks like val just shorter?
I know that this is not on the subject of plants, but I was wondering what procedures I need to do to go from a under gravel filtering system to going to a canister filtering system
You have been a great help cause of you im getting a fx6 for my 125. Now id like to know something else...i have a 75 with about 40 little swordtail molly should i also put a fx6 on that or 2 smaller canister filters the tank has been established for 2 years but i want to get away from hob filters.i hate the cartridges id rather use better filter material. And last.... I can't find Italian Lily Val anywhere can you recommend a place...you have been such a help thanks!!!
would anyone know about leaves (i got in a bag with snails)it stayed fresh and green for a month or two and started to sprout root's from the stem any clues as to type and how to propagate, thanks for your video
im thinking of makeing a ten gallon planted tank, I was thinking if I should do driftwood with some java moss and then. some bacopa in the back. does this work? thx in advance
HI Mike quick question I have a 55g african cichlif tank with clown loaches and a shark. I wanted to put in some love plants to get more of a natural look but people say that cichlids eat them or they dig them out I just thought I should ask you because you seem to know your stuff cheers
What would you say about the moss balls? Also when I’m first starting up my tank should I let the water sit for 24hrs to release the oxygen for the plants? My tank is probably going to be strictly for plants and maybe a few shrimp.
I've struggled with Amazon swords but my wisteria is exploding! Am doing a rescape soon and adding dwarf lilies (banana plants), hornwort, and some jungle val or dwarf grass.
Ive always ran h.o.b filters for 75 gallons or less i now have a 125 gallon and want to go canister what is you opion on best 2 filters im scared to get a larger eheim cause of how i hear them leaking and customer service is not good...and i dont mind spending money....thanks again!
Question, I am not the only one that often experiences Red Ludwigia mushing at that the stalks. The plant will grow great for about 2 weeks then starts to melt at the base. This happens even when planting in separate shoots or bunches and in bio complete or Flourite by Seachem. Ideas ? over fertilization or possibly over C02? Does this plant prefer less attention? Please advise.
2 questions--- for these plants is gravel a good substrate or would you suggest something else?-----With all these plants do you skip gravel vac? I'm guessing yes otherwise the plants would get in the way...... beautiful tank BTW......
Hey there! I have a question. I am going to start a planted tank and I have ADA Aqua Soil as the substrate and just some little Swords and two lovely Anubias Nana. I want to add more plants and let them get a bit established before adding fish. So my idea was to do a fishless cycle and leave the tank devoid of fish for a while. Is that ok???
Mike the tank is five years old it is 90 g with three large amazons over 18" and many other plants i always have problem with brown algae even when i had my reef tank it Most be someting in my water i had it checked out with the lab all the test came back good ,Maybe is me i had to cut back on my feeding, marineland planted LED lights are on for eight hours I use the same dosing as you CO2 is max out with the Drop checker, three filters FX6 and two Emperor 400 in the back over 120 small tetras in the tank all the plants grow fast but the older leafs on the Amazons have brown algae on them. Thanks Mike .
Roger. I think it must be your flow then. When algae builds up like that if all your other parameters are in check it may be a dead spot. Try putting a circulation pump and point it in the area to increase water movement.
You shouldn't be getting any brown algae in an established tank. That's new tank Diatoms. How old is your tank? If it's not new I would suggest cutting your light back a few hours and cut your feeding back to once a day or every other day. Otto cats will devour brown algae but that's just a last resort. Let's figure out why you have it
I grew up with fish tanks had over 20 at one time. haven't been into the hobby for over 20 year's now ,and miss it! have you used under gravel filters ? my plants did really well when I used them.
This video is awesome very informal so thanks for that, I have been having horrible luck with my jungle vals been dying like crazy, i put tabs in the soil and i dose the tank as well. Any suggestions?
I finally got my hob for my 55g do you think my 55g needs an air pump? wouldn't mind putting one on but it just makes too much sound do you think it's nenecessary?
I'm thinking about starting a low tech tank and I have brought some small light gravel as substrate any thing I should put under it or in it to promote growth?
The easiest to take care of plant is algae
Tiny budgie algae isn't a plant
+Caleb Barnes i was just kidding
I think it kind of is a plant isn't it?
keggerous algae does not classify as a plant
Tiny budgie HAH ain't that right
MAN.........you are fast! We are so lucky to have sombody like you...for the past 2 weeks ive asked a few youtubers questions and havent gotten 1 reply. AGAIN.....THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!

Thanks interested in what you do . Can you advise how to plant out an established tank that has fish in it already?
What a beautiful aquarium.
Thanks
I know I'm literally like 5years 2 late for this video, but I'm trying to make a plan to start my very 1st planted tank, as of right now I've got a 20gallon tank with a male Betta and 6 Neon Tetras and I really really want to get live plants for them instead of the fake 1s what kinda substrate is best?
Your angelfish are so beautiful , and so is your fish tank. Amazing setup.
Thank you very much
D. S. I
Yeah, hybrid angels are cool but the natural stripes are so dynamic!! My favorite fish.
do you have a video about the perfect substrate for live plants?
kathy 9880666 the kids h tv ddun5izg twinkle twinkle
Sand is
Just use gravel with high light and add fertilizer slightly higher than the recommended amount.
I appreciate the specification between italian val and jungle val, I've been doing research on them to see which is better and you gave the answer.
No problem. Glad you got an answer
CAN YOU MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT SUBSTRATE? I am building a tank with live plants and i used regular gravel but im thinking about changing out the substrate but there are so many and some raise ph and some dont and i need help!!!
you seriously are the most legit, real instructor. Plus, you are fun to listen to. Thank you
+Amanda B thank you. Any time
that aquarium looks awesome
Thanks.
Just want to thank you for all of your vid’s. My husband and I️ have learned so much from them and we’ve rewatched many. Just thanks to you (and your fam for letting you have the time) for sharing with everyone your advice and experience. 👍🦋
Thanks Carrie. That means a lot. I appreciate that. 🐟👊🏼

Yes gravel can support the plants with root tabs and just plant the hell out of the tank. You. Am always sell or trade clippings
Maybe just a bit of substrate under the gravel, no?
That also helps
Buying all these for when I set up my 125 gallon. Love the look of the Jungle Val flowing in the back.
Thanks. Appreciate it
Great video one day hopefully i will have a nice planted tank
Thanks. You will bro.
I bought some Bacopa.. first thing i did is smell it and I'm glad I did so thanks.
Haha. No problem
Hey, I heard plants like anubus would rather root on wood and large stones, does that STILL MEAN THEY CAN IN GRAVEL? just NOT AS WELL?
I accidentally turned on caps and am too lazy to fix it, don't judge.
Haha. Yes they prefer to be tied with the rhizome out of the substrate
MASS Aquariums thanks
Im setting up a 60 gallon planted angel tank like yours, how many of each you think id need? Thanks in advance for your help!
You could start with 8 and see how it goes. They will fight and pair up if you get male and female. While they are called angels they are pretty aggressive at times but should be fine
Smooth video! I hope you have had a great summer!
Thanks Ricky. It's been great. You?
It has been pretty good!
perfect vid for me! 20yrs w/african cichlids and am setting up my first planted "low maintenance" AQ.
You got this
simple and helpful vid(for beginners) . 👍👍
Thanks a lot👍👍
This will always be my favorite tank that you've posted. Miss this thing.

That is the most beautiful tank i have ever seen on the internet! Great job
+Michael Bassler thank you
Thanks man. Your Video has steered me in the right direction. I recently planted some plants from Petco and Petsmart. Neither are doing well. Probably by design. Thanks for watching. I get a lot of my plants from plantedaquariumscentral.com. Great site and they always come fresh
@@MASSAquariums I just looked at his site & there's no jungle Val listed.
What the Species of bocopa?
Bacopa Carolinia
Cheers

This video is nice and focused. Good quality compared to most. Thank you Mass Aquariums
Thanks you’re welcome
I loved the video until you shoved Maggie's face.
Haha. Sorry. Have to let them know who’s boss
@@MASSAquariums No. The dog moved the camera and cut the top part of your head and the tank off.
Quick call peta!
How big is that tank behind you and what size circulation pump did you use?
75 gallons. I forgot what size it was. One of the bigger ones
Tank looks fantastic, great video with explanations on these beginner plants. Just bought myself an aquarium and was humming and harring between live and fake. After seeing this vid , deffo going live , cheers
You got this
Damn doggo got stiff armed out the way 😂
She was a big girl. Miss her
Hi was wondering how thick of substrate do u use doesn’t look very thick like little over an inch?
2 1/2”
Shoving the dog was hilarious. Poor baby wanted to play and then he got told lolol
Maggie was the best
Mike, what kind of light are you running?
Question regarding Bacopa...Do I Plant this in Gravel or tie to driftwood? Thank You
Plant it right in the gravel
Can you go more into detail about trimming Amazon swords? I do not understand what u mean by cut it off. In the middle of the Leaf or near the stem?
Amazon sword you want to cut all the way at the bottom near the base on the stem
Also how do they propagate?
What's the size of the aquarium behind you and what lighting is used in it?
75 HO T5
is it same bacopa which we plant in containers or is it different for aquarium
Can the beginner plants be grown in regular colored fish gravel or is the too large for substrate....thank you
Yes they can
Nice!! What the dimensions of the tank? Which filter/s are you using? Thanks
4x2x2. Fluval 406
Hi. do you think it is suitable to use a Koralia Wave Maker for a low tech 50G planted tank. I have 2 Blue Rams, 4 Rosy Barbs, 1 Bristlenose Catfish, and 2 Red Finned danios. Plant species include thus far Anubias Nana, and Amazon Sword. Thankyou.
Yeah
will the grow in rock substrate or do you need to have the sand or soil substrate right now I have the little colorful gravel substrate
These plants will grow in any substrate.
These plants will grow in any substrate.

👍🏻
Please tell me how do you anchor your plants ?
You can use rocks or a weight
So high tech means ??? I have a regular fish tank with simple lighting... what do I need to start. Can I just put the 29gal by the a shaded window? Bamboo?
Not sure what you’re asking. High tech is high light fertilizer and CO2 injection with demanding plants
what equipment do you have on the aquarium?
Do you have to put gravel on top of fluorite substrate?
+Jordan Tate no you do not
Hi can I use pea gravel from lowes ? It's bigger than your standard fish store gravel. I have black convicts and a jack dempsey. 125 gallon
Yep. Just rinse it well with tap water
MASS Aquariums thanks alot !
Can bacopa plant survive with out sticking them in substrate? I tied some on a twig branch and big rocks.
As long as you feed the roots
I've got a wendtii that's been growing 6 month's its now triple the size and the center piece plant. I've got val growing in backleft to center.
Starting to add bacopa moneywort in right back to center.
I'm going to add dwarf amazon sword mid ground just for fun and random variety thats more natural to the fish
Sweet
How do you clean the gravel on the tank with all the plants in it?
I just graze the surface on my dirted tank. I don't do a full gravel vac
Do u need special soil / gravel for Amazon swoard if so wat type and wat brand
They are root feeders so nutrient rich soil is good
Thanks
Beautiful aquarium and informative video. Brilliant.
Thank you
Do plants need a specific type of light? Or can it be any regular flourescent lamp or bulb that you can buy in a hardware store??
You can use a 10k white bulb from Home Depot
MASS Aquariums so it can be any regular lamp or bulb
Hi. You mentioned your jungle val was the Italian species. Unlike the Americana. My question is do you use any Seachem ferts in this tank? I've heard Seachem ferts will burn jungle val. Thanks in advance.
I was using potassium and iron
What substrate are you using in this video? What eco-complete work well with these plants?
Dirt capped with gravel. Yes eco will work
I appreciate it. I think I will try dirt on a 29 gallon tank first, before I do something with my 80 gallon.
It looks like black gravel. Is there any specific size gravel to keep the dirt from coming through? I was thinking to go with Imagitarium Black Aquarium Sand or Imagitarium Black Aquarium gravel. Perhaps the sand would be to fine. You can see it on petco website.. thanks for all the help!
good video. I'm a beginner with a 10 gallon. Im thinking about adding some live plants, does it change things when you add plants to an existing tank?
It helps
Will my African Ciclids eat any of these 5? Would some be better than others for African Ciclids? Thanks for your help.
Yes they destroy most plants. I’ve researched that bitter plants like Anubis’s they don’t really like
What kind of substrate would you recommend ?
Anything that pleases your eye. Also what kind of tank you’re trying to establish
I will be getting the jungle val Italian for the background to my 20 gal tank. How many do you think I’ll need? 4? 5? 6?
6
for the jungle val, can you cut it realy short and put it in the front too as like a carpet of grass, or is that too short for it? if not, do you have any other beginner plants that grow as a carpet of grass that looks like val just shorter?
It will just get tall. Dwarf sag is good. Dwarf hair. Grass
I know that this is not on the subject of plants, but I was wondering what procedures I need to do to go from a under gravel filtering system to going to a canister filtering system
Robert Lambrecht keep the under gravel filter.
Just remove one and add the canister

Put a 406 on the 75. That's what I run. Plantedaquariumscentral.com.
Thanks man
would anyone know about leaves (i got in a bag with snails)it stayed fresh and green for a month or two and started to sprout root's from the stem any clues as to type and how to propagate, thanks for your video
Could be wisteria
How do you clean a planted tank, I have a 30 gal I want to plant in but not sure I want some thing thats a lot of work.
+R Bear same way you clean any other tank
Will my pleco eat the plants listed...also have trouble finding dwarf lily...currently started to feed fresh veggies to distract him
+cin stjean common Pleco's might. Try plantedaquariumscentral.com
If you don't bury the dwarf lily rhizome, do you have to put a weight on it, or will it stay at the bottom?
+232331mj when it's big it usually stays put.
im thinking of makeing a ten gallon planted tank, I was thinking if I should do driftwood with some java moss and then. some bacopa in the back. does this work? thx in advance
Sounds good to me. What ever you do that makes you enjoy the tank do it.
What subtract us best for all these plants?
Nutrient rich soil
Is it possible to plant any of these in small gravel or would you recommend substrate?
+aliciacb8284747274 gravel is fine and you can add root tabs. That's what I do. Go grab some at shop.myaquariumbox.com
do you suggest water lettuce? just found them while im wondering in our park
Great nitrate buster. Grows really fast
How often and how much water change do you do to keep the tank healthy?
25% every 2-3 weeks
HI Mike quick question I have a 55g african cichlif tank with clown loaches and a shark. I wanted to put in some love plants to get more of a natural look but people say that cichlids eat them or they dig them out I just thought I should ask you because you seem to know your stuff

+Ben Dover. I would use fake plants bit there are some bitter plants they won't eat

You can add plants right away. Moss balls are great for shrimp
Do they need any substrate ? I don't have any in my tank and I really want to get some live plants for my fish and snails.
Most do but a lot of plants don't need it ot
Does staurogyne repens grow easily and need much work?
Depends. It's considered an easy carpet plant but I've never had any luck with it
I've struggled with Amazon swords but my wisteria is exploding! Am doing a rescape soon and adding dwarf lilies (banana plants), hornwort, and some jungle val or dwarf grass.
Cool. That sounds good
Ive always ran h.o.b filters for 75 gallons or less i now have a 125 gallon and want to go canister what is you opion on best 2 filters im scared to get a larger eheim cause of how i hear them leaking and customer service is not good...and i dont mind spending money....thanks again!
I would go with a Fluval FX6
What if you use aquarium salt? Are there any plant that can take that? Thank you
Most will melt
Hey man what type of Amazon Sword is that one?
Is there a balance? Is it okay to add lots of plants in the tank or is there a balance. I have a five gallon by the way.
The more plants the better
Do plants need filters?
What kind of gravel you using ?..can i use colour gravel like blue and black?
+Jonathan Poopal of course
What Kind Of Gravel you Using on this Tank? I am Not success with my Jungle Val's.. with Colour Gravel.
How do you keep the Jungle Val restricted to the back of your aquarium?
Clip the runners
How do you syphon gravel with so many plants ?
You hover over the gravel

Wow, I honestly didn't think I could do that. Thanks so much for the prompt answer and your great work.
Hey Mike is it possible for me to attach a dwarf lily to a rock like I did to my anubias?
Yeah definitely. The rhizome does not have to be burried

Roger. I think it must be your flow then. When algae builds up like that if all your other parameters are in check it may be a dead spot. Try putting a circulation pump and point it in the area to increase water movement.
Would they be ok in Pebble size stone substrate
Yep
what is the fish with the black mid line stripe and red above the stripe
Denison Barb
Any tips on how many gph should circulation pump in my planted 50 gallon have? Thank you. Love your videos, learned a lot.
Thanks. Appreciate it. You could do 650 or 850
Hey Mike any problem with Amazons getting brown algae on there leaves ? i just sick of cleaning mine every week any pointers.

I stay away. To hard to clean
This video is awesome very informal so thanks for that,
I have been having horrible luck with my jungle vals been dying like crazy, i put tabs in the soil and i dose the tank as well.
Any suggestions?
It will usually melt back for awhile then bounce back. Is your water soft?
Hi
How important the substrate for these plants? Can i just attach to driftwood?
All these should be buried in the substrate for good root growth
I finally got my hob for my 55g do you think my 55g needs an air pump? wouldn't mind putting one on but it just makes too much sound
do you think it's nenecessary?
+Ben Dover. No. You don't need one
How do u keep the Val from running to the front of the tank, u just pull out where u don’t want it to be???
Yep. Pull it
Can u have gravel and these will grow or do you have to have sand?
Nope gravel works great. That's what I use
Can too much light kill plants? I have 2 finnex stingrays on a 40b and the new growth on my Amazon swords seem to be diminishing
Not that I have researched. Promotes algae.
I'm thinking about starting a low tech tank and I have brought some small light gravel as substrate any thing I should put under it or in it to promote growth?
You can put osmocote organic below the substrate before you put it down
+MASS Aquariums thanks for the fast reply
