I really admire all the efforts done by Jeffrey Sach. Withour doubt, he is a great thinker and a man who is long-sighted. His book "Common Wealth" is a book should be read by all the people who concern about our planet. Hereby to pay my greatest tribute to him.

Sachs is truly an outstanding person - combining such brilliant understanding of economics with an admirable passion to fight for the poor...
    My deepest respect to him!

Reading 'End of Poverty' right now, amazing.
Also recommend Stephen Lewis' 'Race Against Time', lays it out in 5 direct points.

"We are at a turning point in our history. There are two paths to choose. One is a path I've warned about tonight, the path that leads to fragmentation and self-interest. Down that road lies a mistaken idea of freedom, the right to grasp for ourselves some advantage over others. That path... is a certain route to failure. President James Carter, The "Malaise Speech", Jimmy Carter.

I think the reason why more money is being put in military, is because other country's do not think there is a lot of trade with poor countries( look at china, since there is something to trade with ( cheap labor, etc) other countries), it's all about MONEY.

there has to be a program that looks to eventually end the aid. I don't think subsidies are a bad thing in the US or for an African country(through aid until not necessary) for instance the US started using oil very early for economics. subsidize education/training and factories to build solar panels and efficient batteries. for africa subsidize water delivery and farms. making mosquito nets. P.S. this dude sachs wants a conscription thing for americans

Jeffrey Sachs is actually the director of the Millennium Development Goals and he also founded Millennium Promise, an organization that supports entire villages in all areas, from health care to education to sustainable development and agriculture, etc He is one of the most influential and knowledgeable ppl in the field because he has worked closely with numerous nations as an economic adviser and understands how nations flourish. Try reading his book, or anything about him, before posting bs.

@truevoice08 But arent we called to aid those who need it? i dont see starving children who walk miles to go to school here in america.. Helping other nations is what we as americans are called to do.

really? he did not privatize russia's natural resources? Or Bolivia's? He does not want "universal volunteerism" for americans. (conscription) and why doesn't he start a charity up for bednet in africa? Nothing is stopping him. A lot of people would donate to it. He could just put up a website and ask people everywhere to donate to it. As a matter of fact that seems like a pretty good idea,

There will always be poverty in Africa as long as the World Bank and IMF exist. This guy has good intentions but can't see the big picture.
Plus I don't think the only way to help poor countries is to throw more money to them like what Sachs wants to do.

@ZACHinSF I don't know what kind of calling you are talking about? Just because you want to help others doesn't mean you should force me to help them too by using my (tax) money. Foreign aid is even unconstitutional. But since we both care about starving children, let's use that as our starting point. Africa has been injected with foreign aid and their economies managed by these UN PhDs for decades now. The result: ZERO DEVELOPMENT. As I've said, foreign aid empowers dictators.
