- "I Thought About You" is a 1939 popular song composed by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was one of three collaborations Van Heusen and Mercer wrote for the then recently established Mercer-Morris publishing company, started by Mercer and former Warner Bros. publisher Buddy Morris. The other two were called "Blue Rain" and "Make with the Kisses". "I Thought About You" was by far the most popular of the songs. The lyrics were inspired by Mercer's train trip to Chicago. Mercer has said about the song: "I can remember the afternoon that we wrote it. He [Van Heusen] played me the melody. I didn't have any idea, but I had to go to Chicago that night. I think I was on the Benny Goodman program. And I got to thinking about it on the train. I was awake, I couldn't sleep. The tune was running through my mind, and that's when I wrote the song. On the train, really going to Chicago." Mercer went on to author other songs whose central theme were trains, including "Blues in the Night" (1940) and "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" (1946).
Billie's accompanied by Alto Saxophone -- Willie Smith, Bass -- Red Callender, Drums -- Chico Hamilton, Guitar -- Barney Kessel, Piano -- Bobby Tucker, Trumpet - Harry "Sweets" Edison. Recorded September 3, 1954. (Verve Records)
I took a trip on the train
And I thought about you
I passed a shadowy lane
And I thought about you
Two or three cars parked under the stars
A winding stream
Moon shining down on some little town
And with each beam, same old dream
At every stop that we made
Oh, I thought about you
But when I pulled down the shade
Then I really got blue
I peeked through the crack
And looked at the track
The one going back to you
And what did I do? I thought about you
Thought about you, thought about you
Bobby Tucker's piano is the perfect compliment to Billie's vocals - this is version of the song I love above all others.
Hearing Billie sing is just an experience equal to nothing else! I just drift away!
I have this recording on an old LP I inherited from my parents. Always loved it, and am glad to know it is available on the internet.
Listening to lots of versions (I'm learning the tune). This one almost stops my heart....I've heard it before but I'd forgotten it did that.
what else can be said about this woman, thanks BILLIE! oxox
Pure magic. In a class of its own
I can imagine ever one dress to impress. she's on stage with the dress on everyone was talking about. And orchestra behind her. some of the a-list people of that era come out to see this Billie Holiday . I can only imagine the lighting the. women when the light shine dawn this legend.
Timeless forever ♥️
took a trip on a train... moon shining down... looked at the track, the one going back...
i dreamed about this song last night and now i'm listening to it all day isn't that ironic ?

Divina, canta. Pra caralho
Yes!!! Thank you!!! 1Nation4Life
Brilliant and the only version worth listening to.
Miles Davis did a wonderful version too.
This is my LADY even with all her vocal flaws at the time...she WAS the best....~
Wonderfull
yes i shall always love this
❤❤❤
Divina!!!
Thanks so very much
Divina...
Best vocal version.
@mister...Yes, I agree. But I do say this: Jaye P. Morgan, with that dark brown quality to her register, can also do a good job with this. In fact, she covered it, but I just can't seem to find it. Just listen to Morgan's work, and you'll see what I mean.
The only lament, such as this is, that comes to me at the moment is "Diamond in the Rust," sung by Joan Baez, a consummate storyteller.
OMG I have many Ms Lady some how I do not have this one. Thank you
I wish she could have recorded this when her voice was at it's peak... but even in failing health and voice Billie can't be touched
Some say that Billie sounded her best when she was near the end of her life. I have an album that was recorded about a fortnight before she died and it is the best I've heard of her. It's the "lady In Satin" double album. Absolutely superb!.
Ive heard some of Lady in Satin. I'll have to listen to the whole thing.
Very unique voice
wowowowowowowowowo
I love this and I'm also crazy about Sarah Vaughan's version.
Have you heard Ella Fitzgerald's version of this?
Today: August 28, 2020
@@miss30427 No argument -- and hard to decide -- Ella Fitzgerald sings it so straight and pure. I love it.
I said this years ago, 59;s singing star could've also done a slam dunk on this blues number as well as her contemporary, Chet Baker. And I say this even as a devoted fan of Holiday's.
Nice Holiday version of I Thought About You.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I came back because of poor Malcolm's reply. Sorry Malcolm, I still feel the same about stoned Billie. My ears are still hurting with the first four bars of her singing.
☺️🌸🐬💙
in her own league
Has there ever been a better Singer.???
Love me some Billie, but I'll take Ella.
@@thomasleary2814 NEVER!
How can anyone post an unlike or dislike for Lady Day's version of "I Thought About You"? Such a person is musically deaf and musically ignorant to have that opinion.
Hello Beauty...
I have this sheet music
do you have it for this particular version?
Does someone know what key this is in?
No!
Another favorite singer, but preferably from the 1930's and 1940's. Her later years were not good and affected her singing.
Is there a better singer then Billie?
Puts me to sleep. Sinatra owns this.
he surely does.
tricky dick Sinatra doesn't even come close. This one belongs to Billie.
+tricky dick Sinatra is a man...this is a women
+tricky dick If this puts you to sleep, stop listening to GREAT music. Frank was great, so was Billie.
I've already followed your advise halfway: I've stopped listening to this one.
Sheeeeeeeeeesh!!! I have never understood the love or respect of Billie Holiday. She always had a scratchy voice and sounding like right out of the 1920's. Wake me when it;s over!!! She sounds very much in a drugged state, which no doubt she was in when recording this song. Sinatra did have a good version if this song but I think Dinah Washington had a very good version, though quite commercial on her album, "What A Difference A Day Makes."
Your a fucking idiot
Scott: You would have a different and more likable opinion if you listened to her from the mid 1930's to the late 1930's, especially when accompanied by Teddy Wilson. Give it, a try; you should be convinced.
You have no soul.
Old scratchy voiced Billy. Never understood the love affair with this singer. There are so many better recordings of this song. She always sounded full of heroin and right out of 1920. I can see her clearly standing in front of a mic, bleary-eyed with that damn gardenia in her hair.
Poor soul , you that is.
