  • In this video we're listening to VanHalen for our Friday Favourites series. We've been fans of Van Halen's music since we were preteens. We just couldn't believe how amazing this band was. We are really excited to go back now, and listen to their earlier work. Enjoy!

What makes this song for me is Eddie's guitar work.

Hello, a great reaction. I would recommend going back and listening to the albums. Every song is great. The next song on this album would be a great song for you to do. It's a little different.

Betty actually played in miniature Les Paul for this song. I know that was a rarity a collector's piece as far as the guitar. This is my favorite Van Halen song any incarnation anytime

And yes you are correct. It was two totally different bands. No matter how many times say is still Van Halen, it's just not. All new songs, no cross over. I know they played the occasional jump or panama, but not the same band. No more the same than the Yardbirds and Led Zepplin were the same band.
There is nothing like Van Halen and Dave is one of a kind. Great lyricist too. This is one of my favorite songs and albums.

Im not a huge fan of many bands from this branch of Rock/Metal, EVH is the only one that makes them stand out for me. He's quite restrained here, though still very tasty..... I've occasionally thought he would have made a phenomenal Jazz player!

Very cool that you two had chosen to react to this song! 😀👍 I too prefer David Lee Roth as VH's singer, and 'Diver Down' has always been my favourite album of theirs 😊 And I just 😍 this song! 😄 Takes me right back to when I was 12 myself! 😁 They _did_ perform this song live on actual little guitars, by the way! 😄 And you're right, it doesn't feature any of Eddie's usual guitar acrobatics, but it has really great rhythm guitar playing in it (I reckon), and I also love his sound choices 😊 On the album, this song is actually preceded by a great classical guitar intro, titled 'Little Guitars Pt.1'! 😀 And I agree, the '1984' album is also awesome! 😊👍

And seeing you'd also reacted to Extreme's brandnew song today: You two most probably know that Gary Cherone had once also been Van Halen's singer, right? He'd only lasted for 1 album though, titled 'Van Halen III'. They'd released only 1 single from it, 'Without You'; Maybe you'd like to react to that one or another song from that album one day, if you haven't yet heard it!? Would also be new to _me_ ! 😁

glad to see you guys specifically recognized David Lee Roth. There is a reason why VH have sold 34 million albums with him as opposed to 18 million with hagar. And the 2007 reunion tour with Roth dwarfed the 2004 reunion tour with hagar in every way including: average tickets sold per night, total tickets sold for the tour, and total gross revenue. It wasn't even close people. Van Halen are in the hall of fame because of the first 6 albums with Roth, and everyone knows it regardless of whether or not they will admit it. Van Halen made history with Roth, they made some hits with hagar, and there's a big difference. A lot of lying guitarists will try and make it seem like it was ALL Eddie Van Halen, but nothing could be further from the truth. The bottom line is: as Eddie took more and more control of VH, especially by the time they hired 3rd singer Cherone, VH suffered more and more in regards to public interest in the band. Then, after the aforementioned less than enthusiastic response from the public in 2004 to the hagar reunion tour they had no alternative solution left but to bring back David Lee Roth.
I've seen just about every big heavy rock band their is in my time, and no one, I mean NO ONE could compare with David Lee Roth in his prime. He could hold an arena audience in the palm of his hand like no one else I've ever seen. And it's worth pointing out that Roth wrote all his own lyrics, melodies, and in addition to being arguably the greatest frontman of all time, also helped design VH's stage sets back in the day, plus it was ROTH that told the VH brothers to actually call the band VAN HALEN when they were coming up in the L.A. area before getting signed by Warner Bros.
And lastly, one memory I'll never forget is when going to Daytona Beach around 82' or 83' on vacation one year (Daytona used to be the place to go in those days) there was a t shirt shop I went into. They happened to have a Van Halen shirt for sale, and there was one singular person on that shirt beneath the VH logo..............DAVID LEE F'ING ROTH. I never forgot it. And it speaks volumes to Roth's immense influence on the band, and the general public. Van Halen's legacy as a band will always lie with David Lee Roth. Anyone who says different it either lying, naive, or just flat out stupid.

This song, for me, signaled Eddie's cross over to a new sound. Hard to describe but kind of like moving away from hard crunching guitar riffs (Unchained, Ain't Talkin Bout Love, Panama... ) to more sustained and scratchy chords. Songs like Humans Being, Poundcake, Can't Stop Loving You are other examples.,
