cocteau understood that magical tales cannot be only magical by theme but by form as well, something disney also understood in their first films but forgot once the CGI age arrived. These fairy tales shouldnt have any logic attached to them, yet disney lately treat them as they were another story, which defeats the purpose surely. Magic comes from its subject but also from the illogical universe in which its contained. Cocteau knew and used this very well, like harry kumel in the great malpertuis
Yeah, Disney's gone off the deep end lately with their constant lampshading and self-awareness. It's almost like it caters to the nitpickers who talk about how the movies based on fairy tales make no sense. I have nothing but pity for those people.
They didn’t “forget”, they’re woke globalists who know exactly WTF they’re doing, ie: brainwashing children and losing money (which it’s not about anymore, than the magic). Cheers
I love these movies and Cocteau!
I love the 1946 Beauty and the Beast film, To me its the best Beauty and the Beast adaptation.

Marais was so fine...
Both of these are really fantastic films, but only on Criterion of course!
If you talk about someone, especially as a film critic, the least is to pronounce his name correctly. It is JEAN MARAIS [ʒɑ̃ maʁɛ]
You probably say “schedule”, but not “shool”, thanks Captain Phonics
