Help me understand how a No. 2 pick, a 4x all-star, a member of the NBA 50th Anniversary Team, a rookie of the year and a player who has his number retired by two teams is the most underrated player ever? He is considered an all-time NBA great.

@@Russ_Hoops i will help you. earl's name never comes up when people talk about great players. in fact, most people who watch basketball today, have probably never heard of him. player's legacies continue to evolve long after they retire. for example, when they were both playing, ray nitchske was the number 1 middle linebacker, dick butkus was number 2. most current fans have never heard of ray nitchske, but butkus is a household name. that is one of many reasons why players cant be compared, over generations. and i have to chuckle at people trying to talk about who was the best, when they never even saw the player play - LOL. if you did not grow up, watching the player, then you simply dont know. that is why i only talk about players that i grew up with. i would pick walt frazier as my number one guard. over robertson, west, earl the pearl, or anyone else. he was the best defensive guard out there, and was just as good on offense. it was wonderful seeing clyde and pearl on the same team, together !!

*_Earl the Pearl_* was our hero in the early 70s. Now we loved Pete Maravich and almost all of us wore the *_Pistol's_* floppy socks; but many teens all over Detroit were wearing number 10 - Earl Monroe. "Clyde" Frazier also wore #10 but *_The Pearl_* was the man.
Looking back I remember once we had an organized game in some type of tournament somewhere in Detroit. I had the ball and I came down Court a-spinnin'! 3 guys tried to take the ball from me and I spun away from all three of them, one at a time; had the crowd going wild! I could hear the other team yelling at the ref "he's carrying! "he's carrying!" Sure enough on on my last spin the ref called carrying on me. Ruined my second 15 minutes of fame! Haha.
I had one other moment when we played against a JV team from Kettering High. I went down the left side of the lane and faked a jump shot right in front of the center. He jumped to block it and I scooped it up under his arms and laid it in. I had never did that before or again after that. Yeah thats about as high as my skills ever rose, playing a junior varsity team. To this day I live on those 2 memories. At any rate that 3rd spin move still bothers me to this day. If I hadn't been called for carrying I might have went to the pros. Ok. Maybe not. LOL!

I was a partial season ticket holder for the baltimore bullets back in 1969 - 1971. Earl was amazing. We had great seats and sometimes you couldn't believe what he did and it was so fast that you almost couldn't see it! I vividly recall one time when he almost magically managed to dribble through 3 defenders to the basket. He was amazing. And so was Gus Johnson!!!

Never thought of Pearl as having "hang time" as he did nothing above rim level but, to be fair, he would jump, shot fake, kick his legs up, and seem to be in the air long. If you blocked his access to the rim, he brought it down and banked it in.

Definitely the most "unique" player ever. The guy could barely jump over a piece of paper, yet with his "spin move" and "misdirection" could get his shot pretty much whenever he wanted it.
He had some classic head to head matchups with Walt Frazier before he ended up going to the Knicks. He gave Frazier absolute fits, Frazier really didn't know what to do with him, although that hardly made him unique. Pearl was a handful and then some.

I had a high school teacher in early 70's who attended Norfolk State back when the Pearl was playing and watched a game Norfolk State vs Winston-Salem State. He told me in the first half of one game Monroe could not miss he said he hit EVERYTHING! and scored 40 in the first half then twisted an ankle early on second half. 40 in a half in college is stupid !

In New York (and Philadelphia) in the end of the '60s thru the early '70s, you HAD to do the spin move if you were planning to go one-on-one and make your rep. But Earl had the ball on a yo-yo string. A rubber band. It just stayed in fluid motion.

I remember a game he played against the Bullets about a month or so after he was traded to Knicks its a 2 on one with Monroe with ball and Frazier Phil Chenier was defending Monroe. The pearl goes around the back through his legs perfect bounce pass to Frazier for the layup. Phil Chenier picked up his jock and then put his socks back on and continued with the game. Phil Chenier was a very good NBA guard. the Pearl was one of a kind

Of course, of course, of course I love Earl the Pearl, us kids on the play ground in the 70s tried our best to emulate Earl, Pistol, Tiny and all the fancy Dan cats of our era because they were a rare breed back then . I wasn't a Dr. Jay guy because I couldn't jump like that. But I could do some of the things those guys that I mentioned could do because it didn't involve jumping. It was more a skill set of dribbling and passing. And they had that rough drive to the basket at any cost school yard game that we played back then. But one thing I think was a little inaccurate regarding this video was saying that Earl the Pearl was the one that basically originated the spin move which is not true. The Pearl revolutionized the spin move, the Pearl modernized the spin move and made it his own. The Pearl had the coolest smoothies spin move that I've ever seen. But he wasn't the first one that I ever saw use it as a "weapon" to maneuver around defenders. The first one that I ever saw use the spin move in that context was none other than Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics from the 1950s. And later on I witnessed Jerry West of the Los Angeles Lakers use a version of it to get around defenders. But no one bar none ever had more variations or did it as smooth as the Pearl,, no one!!!!!

  • @thewordkeeper

I was just thinking about a game that I saw on tv between the Knicks and the Bullets before The Pearl was traded to New York. I never will forget it. The reason being was at one point when Clyde was checking The Pearl he fouled him. Frazier never really showed much emotions on any call when he played one way or the other.
However, it was apparent that Frazier disagreed with the foul because after being either knocked down in the lane or falling down in it he just sat there. The referee waited for him to move but he didn't. So he gave the ball to Pearl for the FT and he still didn't move. I don't remember how many extra shots Monroe got at the line, probably one or two more, before Clyde finally got up. I don't remember ever seeing that happening on any level again since then.
