  • This is a trip i took in the back country of northern Ontario temperature was bitter cold in the range of - 15 to -24 Celsius. I trek a distance of 3.5 km in one way half lake travel other half forest trail. Loaded my pulk with all my gear and also brought ice fishing rods to try and catch the elusive brook trout. The journey lats 2 days and a fierce storm on the second day making trekking difficult going back.

    Two suggestions. I have the same pulk and mounted on a pair of downhill skies and believe me. I cut the drag in half. much easy to pull specially when you trek for more than six hours every day with a 150 pounds load. try it. And the other is. Sleep more to the center of the teepee to avoid the condensation so near your body, it dissipates better and does not get absorbed back in to your sleeping bag which believe me....it happens. It acts like a sponge making your sleeping bag less efficient. I live in the arctic most of the winter... Not lecturing...just sharing some tips...

    My older son and I have done a bit of winter camping over the years. It's quite fun as long as you have the right stuff. We got caught a couple times in the fall camping and it's not nearly as much fun in the cold when your not exactly prepared. You've got some nice winter stuff and could battle a pretty hard freeze. Keep warm.

    I have found that you can take large drysacks for canoeing and use them to hold water. when they are rolled up they store as small rings. A few of these large neoprene bags filled with very hot water will help keep the whole tent warmer until morning after the stove goes out. I use the Sealline Baja bags and they do a decent job with the warm water (have not had the courage to try boiling) and come in sizes up to 55 liters. The black ones full of water will heatup in sun, or near the stove.

    That air mattress is amazing. I was sitting here wondering who thought of such a thing. Great bed.

    • @Expeditionmarc
      @Expeditionmarc  11 лет назад +1

      Hi the real purpose is that cause there is down in the mattress there is no moisture using the bag. If you blew the down inside would get wet and make the mattress less effective. Thanks for watching.

    • @shuggyss
      @shuggyss 10 лет назад +2

      ExpeditionMarc The Cdn military have used a similar system air mattress for years without the down inside. It was called the rubber lady. We used them one year down to -53 c in the 5 man Arctic tents. Not quite as much space as you have in yours :-D.

    I had a question about keeping the fire going through the night but you answered that. It's definitely cozier if you are not alone and take turns to keep the fire going:) I've hiked few times in similar conditions, but my sleeping bag was from some random store and was rated +5C and the tent/stove was some old russian military model:) Thankfully we were 4 and we could keep the fire going most of the night. But the minute the flame went out..I was freezing my A off. Still, it was a fun experience.

    I have done it many times in -20 to -30 weather I have even used it in -50 in northern kazakhstan. The only issue is getting the water, but in your video you were camped near a lake and had an auger to drill through ice so should be easy for you. The key is having a large enough mass as smaller containers loose heat a lot faster.

    the other reason for using the bag, is your breath has moisture that would decrease the loft of the down... so the "room air" tends to be more dry

    Thanks for the nice comment my stove is not too air tight and with softwood and -20 Celsius it seems I need to stoke it every 30 to 40 min in order to keep the inside warm at ground level but went I'm sitting its like 80 in there. I did have hardwood but they were on the ridges and I had worked enuf that day I took what was close. It a lot of work when you are solo.
