    I want to start a cat sanctuary here in Florida - it's been a life long passion. I am scared. I don't have the funds to purchase a property but I keep looking. It's important to make a difference and make the world a better place. I am overwhelmed and scared to fail at this dream. You are amazing and really help!

    Loved this video! I founded a nonprofit that serves children with special needs or disabilities and their families, but I also volunteer my time with a local animal rescue. I am currently helping them write some grants, because there is always a need more more funding! This rescue focuses on cats and kittens mostly, but they serve dogs occasionally as well. My organization partners with the rescue by having the foster kitties participate in events with the children we serve. For example, the children can read to the kitties to practice their reading skills and they can play with them during sensory friendly events to stay calm. Folks who run rescues are amazing humans with ginormous hearts! Thank you! ❤🐕❤😸❤

    Your video is amazing. I care for 20 dogs now & spent over 14,000.00 of my own retirement funds caring for them. The government certainly doesn’t make it easy on people who are trying to make a difference in their community. A community that had no heart for dogs. I pick up dumped dogs & I can no longer house anymore. I care for all these dogs on a disable income monthly & dip into my retirement when I have to. I’m 64 years old & this is all just hopeless. I cannot start up a rescue due to all the necessary steps you must take in order to do so, it’s just ridiculous & discouraging. The shelter in Jasper, TX puts them down so I have no way of finding these dogs their forever homes. I do list them where I can but it takes many months & years to place one dog. I just placed one 2 weeks ago after housing him for a year. I got him neutered & shots just like I do with most of them when funds are available. Rescuing animals is what I do when I can but at this point & time I must stop. I have to find these dogs homes ASAP. My health is failing.

      (Sorry, seeing this message after your other one!) Please take care of yourself Laurie! Are there others you can connect with in your community who care about this issue like you do? Support (emotional and otherwise) is so important in this work.

      Laurie, you may want to contact private rescue organizations, especially those that transport out of state. I know Texas is very overwhelmed with stray dogs. Three little pitties is a rescue in TX that transports dogs out of state and takes them to forever homes up north. I’m sure there are others that may be able to help. From one rescuer to another, please take care of yourself.

    Your video was amazing. It definitely made me realize starting a rescue which I already have I just don’t have it registered as a nonprofit rescue, that it is hopeless. I walked away discouraged. I spent over 14,000.00 last year of my own retirement funds caring for the 30 dogs in my care.

      Don't be discouraged - it is hard, yes - I hope the video shared the possibilities of what you could accomplish, too. Nobody can (or should) tell you how to spend your money, but if you decided to pursue nonprofit status, know that donations and support can lift that burden from you with some organizing and outreach.

    Animal rescues are hustlers. This is more towards specific breed rescues. They find these hot commodity dogs and they place them up for adoption at a higher price than what the local shelter would. There are many tax benefits when it comes to being a non-profit and keep in mind that Goodwill is also considered a non-profit and their CEO makes the $500,000 a year

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  24 дня назад

      It sounds like you may have had a negative personal experience and I'm sorry to hear that, if so. However, this is an unfortunate misconception and the facts do not support this. An unfortunate number of nonprofit professionals are under-compensated (especially animal rescue organizations). The misunderstandings around this are part of the "overhead myth" that has caused widespread under-investment in social impact work, resulting in social issues being solved much more slowly than they need to be. There's a great documentary out about this called Uncharitable that I highly recommend!

    • @Bandit_X
      @Bandit_X 24 дня назад

      @@AmberMelanieSmithyes! This is my opinion based off my personal experience and you'll have to excuse me as I'm new to shelters. My primary concern is that these organizations may not be driven by a genuine commitment to animal welfare. Instead, it seems as though there might be other motivations at play, possibly unrelated to the well-being of the animals. The high adoption fees for specific breeds, which are often unaffordable for the average person, suggest a focus on profit rather than facilitating the best outcomes for these animals. I know rescues are non-profit, but I can make the argument that Goodwill is also a non-profit but their CEO makes $500,000 a year. I’m troubled by the thought that the moral compass guiding these rescues could be misaligned with the altruistic mission of animal rescue and care. It's suspicious when a animal rescue is able to secure popular breeds of dogs before the shelter puts notice of adoption. It cost $75 at my local shelter to adopt a dog but the rescue chargers $400 for the same dog.

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  23 дня назад

      @@Bandit_X I hear you. But - let's study this together! Let's look at the data. Many local shelters are county run, which means they get government / tax dollars to support their operations. That is not true of independent animal rescues, which means they need to figure out how to pay for all of those same things - facilities, vet care, food, etc. - without tax dollar support. That means the adoption fees may be higher because the costs for that organization are higher and they have to pay for them somehow. Additionally, a large amount of animal rescues are volunteer-run, but even those with paid staff are not overcompensated. There are public nonprofit compensation reports we can refer to to learn more about this. In this 2023 sample report by Candid (cdn.candid.org/pdf/2023-comp-report-sample.pdf), we see that the average CEO of animal-related small nonprofits nationwide makes approximately $44,000 - equivalent to many public servants (and lower than some teachers!). 88% of nonprofits ARE these smaller organizations operating on $500,000 per less, so we can conclude that the majority of these leaders are pretty underpaid by today's standards. Additionally, I can speak from personal nonprofit experience that benefits and time off is not something everyone gets.

    • @Bandit_X
      @Bandit_X 23 дня назад

      @@AmberMelanieSmithwouldn't that prove my point? In my last comment I stated "I'm troubled by the thought that the moral compass guiding these rescues could be misaligned with the altruistic mission of animal rescue and care" If non-profit animal rescues are underpaid and are not funded by the government then by your logic wouldn't that make them more desperate to find animals to make ends meet? Hence why they only target in demand breeds, which can distract the moral compass. There is a reason why there are not a lot of pitbull rescues even though pitbulls make up majority of the shelters capacity. I want to make it clear I'm all for animal rescues but they are still a business even though it's "non-profit", we know profit still needs to be made for day to day operations. My argument is why go after only certain breeds? Shouldn't a rescue be last resort if the shelter can find a suitable home? This is simply a discussion because I was ignorant to shelters until a negative experience happened to me.

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  23 дня назад +1

      @@Bandit_X If you are referring to rescues that say they are "poodle rescues" or other specific breeds, there are many possible reasons for that, including that the leader setting up the initiative is simply most familiar with that breed. As a nonprofit, they can't just take the money generated in fees and keep it for themselves - all funds go back into the organization (that's just how nonprofits are legally structured - no profits are paid out to stakeholders like you'd see in a business).
      These leaders are overwhelmed with pet overpopulation and I have never met a single one desperate to find more animals. It's an extremely stressful effort to lead and many are burning out.
