Your answer was indeed helpful Father Fish and I always try to remember the importance of answering ones own question. I love to listen to Elaine Ingham and she shares the method of using a sample of soil taken from old growth forest in order to seed one's compost and increase the soil succesion (fungal presence). So I'm thinking a sample of soil taken from around the roots of aquatic pond or river plants would be a way to seed my aquarium soil with at least some kinds of mycorrhiza. As you say in the hope of some benefit. Loving the content and always looking forward to more. Dug.

Hey Father Fish! I'm new to the aquarium world, but I must say it has been an adventure to say the least. We bought the fish tank for my son, but I have enjoyed it even more than he has! I'm so glad I found your channel. We now have rock in the bottom of our aquarium, I plan to top it off with 2 inches of sand like you recommend. I only have 2 plants in our 10 gallon aquarium. I plan to order your plant deal! We have been fighting the Nitrite and Nitrate levels for the past 3 weeks. We sadly lost all our fish and I don't plan on putting anything else in the aquarium until we get these levels correct.
We are currently showing a Nitrite of 2.0 ppm and a Nitrate of 5.0 ppm. Our ph is at a 7.5. Do I need to start over completely when I add in the sand on keep some of our existing water in the tank? I appreciate your time and knowledge!

my tank smells like poop and has bubbles once in a while coming from the sand with the dirt under, can anyone answer me if that's normal? or is my substrate compromised or something?

I got the same in one of my tank. If you will know tell me also

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  9 месяцев назад

The smell means sand is not covering soil. Bubbles are normal for a few months.

There should be no smell. Only smell if the sand are stirred up. But we’re suppose to not disturb the sand.

Father fish in your 20+ years old tank, if you dig down into the soil, would you find clay?

In all honesty I think the substrate is a little silly. 5 inch thick substrate takes away all of my viewing area. I like the look of deep water in the viewing area (above substrate). 2"-3" substrate on a tall tank would be my choice. 1" soil, 1 1/2" sand.

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  9 месяцев назад

In a deep tank, the substrate space usage is proportional, just as in a regular aquarium or a breeder.

    Hello
I got my substraight dirtt tank set up
My tank has bubbles coming up from the bottom of the dirt
And it’s creating blooms of mud dust
Why is this happening and can I do anything about it
It’s taken 3 weeks for my tank to just now starting to clear up.
And now the dusty muddy blooms coming up from the bottom of the tank
Please talk about this in a video
Thank you I do love the natural tank
    I got a 50 gal tank
And a 40 gal tank I used back yard dirt on my 49 gal
And I only used a little bit and I washed the sand very very very well
I’m having better results from my second tank it’s not cloudy and it’s been so clear
    I love my fish tanks
    Thank you
However my first time tank is my 55 gal
And I used organic potting soil
    About 3 inches of dirt
And 2-3 inches of sand .i didnot wadh my sand my tank was so cloudy
And 3 weeks later it’s starting to clear . Now the bottom is creating dirt bubbles is it methane gas?
Should I redo my tank with less dirt and sand ? Please do a video on this
    So much appreciated! Your awesome

You used too much soil. Add another inch of sand to the 55 to control its erosion into the water column.

Don't sell air. Sell vacuum. It would come in handy to get a siphon running as well as for other purposes. 😛
To do it right, you really should have a physical store and sell it by volume. Fill a bag yourself. 😛

my serverums and Uaru's eat every plant no matter what it is including climbing house plants that I stuck in the top they ate the roots off a monstera vine, a pothos vine, the peace lillies they even ate all the roots off a tree philodendron. The java fern swords and everything else was gone in a day. I ca only throw duckweed in and just let them eat it. I tried over feeding them duckweed and putting more plants in in the morning whole tank was bare and covered in green poop and they still wanted more. Ive had to put house plants in the top in baskets so they cant eat the roots, they pulled an entire pothos vine under the water and ate the whole thing.

I have kept them with plants successfully. They need greens for food and the planting must be substantial, not one or two.
