I see this came out in 2015 ..i use this paper everyday with charcoal and graphite and colored pencil .. ive only been using it a few months but i have done16 pieces on it and ive had no issues ..i use solvents to blend my pencils and put multiple layers but again maybe they have greatly improved this paper since 2015 .. i love it and i love your videos ..have a great day 😊
The paper may be bad, but still your drawing is phenomenal. :)
This painting is awesome but the thing that stood out to me the most, is how much your videos have evolved. In this one you changed a little bit how you say your tips to not always say them the same way. I am really happy that you not only help other artists to grow but still are able to do so yourself!! Keep going, GREAT WORK!
Valhalla Thanks :D
This is the longest time I've ever seen a person took to say basically just "Bye, Felicia". An excellent, thorough review as always. Thanks, Lisa!
I really appreciate these demonstrations. my art work has become noticeably better in just the last 6 months. and I've been painting since my teens I'm in my 30's now. even my father who carved birds now thinks I should start going in that direction. thank you for what you do
That is great to hear!
Tessa Bailey
Lisa, your work on the tiger is great even if the paper was not up to the quality of that paper you normally use. Lisa, it was good that you tested this new paper that Strathmore produced. It would have been even better if the quality control at Strathmore would have had you test this before they released it to the public. Your testing results are very objective and specific on the areas of weakness. We all appreciate your review of these tools and materials.
Michael Parry I agree :P
I am very glad I watched this video... I bought this paper along with some faber-castell's and decided to try some of the techniques shown in your video.
I am not bad at art, though in no way am I amazing... But even simply trying to blend with the paint thinner, either it didn't blend, or it would warp so badly that it became pretty unusable for a beginner...
I figured I used too much thinner, tried less, same problem... I thought I was doing something drastically wrong, but I am guessing it's certainly not helped by the paper...
Girl, no matter the quality of the paper, you still do miracles ;)
vasiliki tsimpouki Haha thanks!
Thank you so much for making a review on this paper, Lisa! I was quite excited too when I saw their product, and my main concern was how good the paper is at picking up the colored pencils. I don't use blender, and instead I do lots of thin layers to slowly build up the color I want. So that aspect of the paper is important for me, but you addressed that issue.
Gorgeous tiger amazing drawing so dreamy looking
I'm impressed by your patience.
Tim Krause haha thanks :)
THANK YOU!!! Inspired by you, I am experimenting with colored pencils, and I bought a pad of this. I assumed it was ME, that the reason why it was not taking layers was I was doing something wrong. another thing I was not thrilled with was how my underdrawing pressed into the paper and left scratches, and would not take pigment into the scratches. While I do need to develop a lighter hand, I don't usually have trouble with the paper scratch as easily.
Shows how a good artist doesnt need good equipment. They'll make an amazing drawing anyway 😍
I wish I saw this video before buying this paper. I just bought it yesterday and hate it! It's now going to be a sketch pad. The struggle is real!
Yeah I just use mine as scratch paper. It's a very disappointing product.
Based on your reviews, I just ordered the white and cream colored Luminance pencils to use with my Faber-Castell Polychromos which I also bought based on your recommendation:) I love your reviews! They are very helpful. I'll be avoiding the Strathmore colored pencil paper too. I have a feeling they will be making improvements down the line:)
Wildlife Painter I sure hope they do :)
Thanks for putting in your hard work that saves us from using a bad paper.
wow Thanks for this review! I might have purchased it and use several solvent methods...no wonder it's so cheap in the online stores at the moment! I love watching you work, and I am learning so much from you. Many thanks! About your color usage, I am learning about that a lot, and thatch why I am favoring purchasing smaller sets of pencils, if they have a fair to good shade range. I really dont like the look of finding the exact color I want. Mix and blend :D
that is so true, I have the same principle I draw by layers then I jump in all the places adding details. One thing I do the must is that I only draw the pictures I take by doing so you can evolve the the picture and create something original... let the photographers do their own thing and you create your own art =)
Great review & beautiful tiger
kittycat0876 Thank you :)
You should do this image again on good paper just to see the difference
If you look at the paper, you can see that the paper seems very flimsy and it moves as Lisa colors it. That should not be happening. I have worked with thin papers, and I tape mine just like Lisa does. I also airbrush too and my papers do not appear THAT flimsy and they don't move. They shouldn't move especially if the artist taped the paper like Lisa does. This means that the paper warped. I noticed that when paper warps, not only do they lose their shape and appear unprofessional, but they are also extremely weak and likely to tear. This is why I hate working with thin papers....
jack lee I'm going to :D I like this reference photo too much to leave it at just this :D
can you please please please do a skin tutorial for POLYCHROMOS pencils? All the tutorials are for prismacolors and the few for polys are to confusing. I Know you use them so please help.
WOW this is so beautiful! And your dog is so cute!
Juliet Melanie Anderson Thanks! :D
For some reason, I see no problem in the paper, maybe it's because I don't use different paper or maybe it's because i'm inexperienced. The paper I use is from school which is probably thinner then that, and I think the colour saturation is fine. Still, it's my opinion! Great video, i'm glad I subscribed and found you :D
BritishGamerGirl :D Also, what is warping? (if you don't mind explaining!)
When you use school paper, you will probably think it's alright. However, once you use a more professional, thicker, and expensive brand, you will never go back! When you have used the best, you won't settle for the rest!
Warping occurs when the paper isn't thick enough to handle the applied pressure or wet material (i.e. paint, watercolor, paint thinner, etc). You can clearly see that Lisa's paper has warped because as she is coloring it, the paper appears very flimsy, starts to move, and appears wave-like. That should not happen. If the paper warps, it makes the artwork seem unprofessional and delicate because it is more prone to tearing.
In other words, warping is basically the wrinkling of the paper:)
Karen Tran HAHA Thanks for answering the question so well. You saved me some time :D
Excellent review Lisa. Also, even though you aren't completely happy with the end result, it is still amazing. :P
lastone032085 Thank you :)
Great review and painting! :)
***** Thanks :D
Great review! I'm glad I found this video before spending $$$
You have a new patron, love your video's keep up the work!
eef bo Thank you so much!! :D
Love your videos and art!
Mikaela Arango Thanks :D
Oh my, that is not the paper you want for so much layering and the colors do not seem te stick. Love your artworks! Im having some new canvassen coming (which include a woodboard to paint on) in today and bought a picture from the wildlifereferencephoto's.
eef bo Don't they have awesome reference photos?! I have so many from them lol.
Wonderful !
Easy's .Arts Thank you :)
companies LOOK UP - This Lady is giving Honest and Experienced advice - Just saying ... if it were me i rather have her approval than the contrary :) -
Adan kabsaris :)
I have been using this paper for a bit and instead of paint thinner I blend with baby oil and it doesn't wrap as bad. The colors still look quite pale and dull compared to other papers used for coloring pencil art though.
If you ever fail as an artist you can def be a voice actor for all those commercials with the disclaimer at the end lol you do amazing work tho thanks!!!!!!!
Have you used the Canson XL mixed media paper? If so how does it do with your techniques or if not could you do a small review? Thanks so much and your art is some of the most beautiful I've seen :)
+Martha Simms The texture is so rough that it's impossible to get a smooth finish. I've tried varnishing and using solvent with a brush to blend, but the texture of the paper just makes everything look rough. I've tried water color on it and the water seeps through to the next page and warps more than one page at a time. Cutting the pages out and taping it to a board and using water color is the only way to get even-coloring on this paper. It's ok as a sketch book, but it's not good for colored pencil or water color in my opinion. It wears away colored pencil really fast in it's grooves, feels like a waste.
are the fibers to fine? it could also be the binding agent in the paper we ave a paper mill in our town and with new green laws the new binders do make a weaker product but I guess they will get it figured out in the mean time crap paper
I say this paper is a blessing in disguise, because this is your best use of color i have seen.... maybe its a sign to not overdo it with color
Hi Lisa, thanks for the review! I was thinking perhaps you could try using workable fixative and then use pastel pencils over it. Just a thought, I know it's a colored pencil work but I thought pastels may allow you to achieve the vibrancy you were looking for. It's beautiful in any case. I always appreciate the time and tips you share with us. :)
Darren P.I don't like working in pastels :)
Is the paper better or worse then the canson xl bristol vellum?
Loved the review, and even though you are not happy with the paper, your tiger turned out fabulous. What brush do you use for blending with the odorless mineral spirits? I currently use paper stumps, but feel they take so much more time and need to be sanded constantly to clean. Also, which paper do you think is best for using colored pencils? I do blend most of my work with odorless mineral spirits.I use Prismacolor Premiers.
Thanks for testing the paper out for us. Your tiger looks great despite the horrible paper! My strathmore paper medium tooth paper pad wrapped by itself during storage. Is there anything I can do to put it back to shape?
Yolanda Cui if it is just out of shape from storage, chances are if you store it perfectly in shape between two heavy weight books etc, that should reform it just fine.
Amazing!
Saul Del Valle Thanks :)
Amazing drawing and your hair is on fleek ! XD
benbuffy rose Thanks :D
great tigher and I always use canson paper
Canson paper has light fast issues... or so I've heard from many credible artists...
Hey, new viewer here. Just wondering what is that you put on your painbush to blend the pencil colours? It would be great help if you can answer x
Has anyone else tried to look for the reference photo and not found it? If anyone has the direct link to the photo, please post it here.
I dug and dug on the wildlife reference photos site and could not find it. I looked at over 2000 photos searching for it to no avail.
does the -prismacolor white color - work in the same way that the one you're using on this piece?
I'm using this paper now to do a piece and it has been taking me forever to finish it I thought it was my fault at first but I'm glad I was just the paper that sucked
Wow...what an amazing piece of work! I wish i had a tenth of your abilitiy :-)
kevin smith Thanks :)
You've probably already mentioned this previously, but what is your go-to paper for coloured pencil pieces?
Nerflover10097 Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed 140lb watercolor paper :)
Could it be that the paper didn't hold colour because you ironed it?
This is not really a fair test because the paper is not meant for air brushing, it meant for coloured pencils and I'm quite sure you're not supposed to iron it first.
Abrota (Twick78) That is a very good question, but no, ironing it would not impact it like that. It is one of the little tricks we can do to repair damaged (bent or warped) paper. It doesn't take many layers (or as many as I like) because it's essentially light weight bristol vellum. I did some tests on another sheet with no paint thinner or airbrushing just to make sure I felt the same without those tools and had the same results. It's just not suitable for any of the techniques that I (or many other colored pencil artists) use. Every other paper, no matter the label, has worked fine with airbrushing, paint thinner, ironing if I accidentally bent it etc. This was the first I saw warp and not dry back into it's original shape. On a side note, I'm now testing Stonehenge for the first time. So far I've done an airbrushed background and it dried perfectly back into shape like most paper. I'm excited to see how that one works with the way that I layer and blend colored pencils :D
I'm so glad it's not just me . So many good reviews on this so I decided to try it . OMG nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo . I can't get any layers either and the pencil just didn't blend nicely on it . I always try and use up supplies even if they aren't my favorite but I cannot get this paper to work for anything !
This tiger looks great Lisa. Would love to see you do this same tiger on the Fabriana Artistico Hot pressed extra white 140 pound paper for a comparison! :-)
doddt2002 I plan to for sure because I LOOOVE that reference photo. I know I could get better results with better paper. I will choose a different background so it isn't exact though :D
still a beautiful piece, Lisa
Great video, I found this so helpful. I love your artwork
saadia mangoo Thank you :D
Thank you, Lisa for this video. You saved my money =)
Sorry if this comes out rude, but what happened to the wall behind you?
I think this might work for me only becuz im not all that skilled in colored pencil Cuz my expectation are that higher I suppose once I get more skilled I'll have higher expectations but I wanna know does this come in 9x12
yes here's all the different sizes it comes in: www.strathmoreartist.com/draw-drawing/400-series-colored-pencil.html
i need to ask should beginners even use artist grade color pencil since they are selling a set of 12 faber castell polychromos for 20$ at Amazon
+devils 123 Yes, it's better to learn with quality supplies. The bargain supplies just don't work the same so you won't be learning the same things with those.
This still turned out gorgeous, even though the paper wasn't great! I have a question though, I notice they way you use your paint thinner is by loading it on a brush, and so a while back I tried that on a piece I started, but for some reason mine just wouldn't spread? It was almost like it just absorbed into the paper immediately and wouldn't spread and blen like yours did. Any idea why this is? I use Prismacolours right now as I don't have money at the moment for the faber castell's (which I want ever since you compared them), would that have something to do with it? Or perhaps the paper? Thanks!
Thank you for your amazing videos they are very helpful. What paper would you recommend that can take lots of "pounding"?
Lachri Fine Art Newbie Question: Do you have a video of how to fix warping ?
Ray Statter I don't but that would be a great video for the future!!
Lachri Fine Art awesome Lisa 🎨
What colored pencil you used
lisa ur so awesome i just love big cats and i love how u do wild life paintings u are my inspiration and plus could u do a demonstration of oil over acrylic thanks!
how long did it take to make this drawing? i'm really curious
Hi! thank you for this review. Which paper do you uselly use with color pencils?
+Lachri Fine Art
I've really been starting to get into art over the past 1-2 years, and I've just been a little torn on how to make money on my art. I want to start now and save up so that I can support myself when needed, but as you have said, you've got to make a lot of art to do so. How would you recommend making money to get supplies? Getting a lot of small jobs, or getting a part time/full time job? I'm wondering which would be better since I'd need a lot of free time to work on new art. And would you recommend hosting a couple of art classes? I can show how to draw a couple of simple things and just give out pencils and paper, but I'm not sure. :)
+Kat W I had a full time job that allowed me to buy my art supplies when I first started. I also had bills to pay so part time wasn't an option for me in the beginning :) Teaching is a great way to improve your own skills! You should totally do it!
+Lachri Fine Art oh wow this is such an honor to get a reply from you!! Thank you so much for your advice!! I totally will!
Lachri Fine Art just a question. There are plenty of photos that i can find on google. Why purchase a reference pic ?
Sreehari Namikaze because the ones on google are not royalty free. Meaning the photographer can sue you (and will win) if they see you've stolen their photo for your work. You can get more info on this vlog ruclips.net/video/-6jk2ceoKRM/видео.html
That's insane.
Sreehari Namikaze That's not insane, that's how people make a living.
FluffyHetsche I don't think I'd be depriving a photographer of his living if I used a photo he took as a reference for my art work.
Sreehari Namikaze But you would. Considering they took the photo, which is their job. It's really not that complicated. You could always ask the photographer if you could use a photo as reference for free of course. It's not as much about the picture itself, but the copyright. They own the copyright, so if you would make a painting after that image you would copy them, thus breaking the law. Especially if you're planning on selling your artwork in any way.
Just because something's on the internet doesn't mean it's free.
And you should really watch the video Lisa linked, everything you need to know is in there.
How long does it take you to complete a piece like this?
+Kamila Suszko Usually around a week :)
another great painting Lisa and thanks for saving me 20 dollars! I was a little surprised that you use Fabriano Artistico. You never use Stonehenge paper?
Petrusonic I'm actually trying out stonehenge right now on a bee I'm working on. So far I like a lot about it, I can see why so many artists use it. I'm don't think that I will be switching from the Fabriano artistico to stonehenge completely, but I can see myself working on it again for sure. I really want to try a portrait on it. The wax based pencils blend so nicely on it that I think it will be great for getting smooth skin tones. I will have my full review on it in a couple of weeks :D
do you do artwork in marker?
Darn it just purchased this paper a while ago and haven't gotten to use it. I'm sad to know that this paper will not hold up 😭
What is that white pencil called that you use for white places. I can't find it.
Liminum pencil???
And what ereaser do I need? There are severals.
Can you please help me out?
Thank you
I like using electric erasers by Derwent ($8) for detail erasing. Other larger parts, I use a kneaded eraser. The whites she uses are Luminance by Caran D'Ache because they are more opaque than Polychromos and they don't break like Prismacolor.
Thank you for your answer :)
Quilty haakkat I hope you found your pencil :D
Yes I did :)Thank you so muts!!! :D
I just bought a small pad of this paper. I’m glad I didn’t get the larger one.
Awesome artwork :) ....when you use the brush to blend the colors is there a medium you use or is it just the brush itself?
Yare Macedo I'm using Mona Lisa Odorless paint thinner :)
Thank you..I've been trying to figure it out for a loooooonnnnggg time :)
How are you using the brush to blend the colored pencil colors together?
She's using Mona Lisa odderless paint thinner.
George Zakhia Fantastic, thanks!
Love your art! Can you please do a Cheshire cat drawing tutorial?
What are you using for blending the colors?
+Nicolé B. thinner.
Hi Lisa, great review, thanks!!
Could you please review the pencils Coloursoft and Artists? from Derwent, I'd love to know your opinion and see how your techniques work with them.
Thanks for this review!! I'll buy other papers, it was very helpful
I just found you when searching for colored pencil comparisons. Your work is incredibly beautiful. I sent you a private message through youtube. I think the patreon challenges sound so fun. I will check it out.
Heather Wells I look forward to doing a collaboration with you! :D
Thank you so much for responding back. Did you want to wait till June?
It's so funny when I find my favorite polymer clay artists on other videos/channels that I love! I found MyPetiteCakes just a while ago.
Mahalo (Thank You) Lisa.
I HATE WARPING! My ultimate pet peeve!
Karen Tran I'm with you on that. SO FRUSTRATING!!
The paper is probably targeted for prismacolor, not oil-based pencil, which needs more tooth than wax-based pencil.
Yolanda Cui If that were the case, they would need to label it as such. When canvases are made only for oil, the label states so clearly.
"Your values are the most important."
Id say thats just solid all around life information.
Sounds like this paper is suppose to be for dry use only. Which I can understand.. Since it says.. Colored Pencil.. I thought colored pencil paper automatically means for dry use only.. So that maybe your problem.. That is just my opinion.
TheBiteSizedCrafter Well, she did mention that the paper also warped from burnishing which is a dry technique that almost every colored pencil artist uses. Anyway, the makers should have been aware that quite a lot of people use paint thinner or other similar things to blend colored pencil. Not trying to start an argument but from what I heard, it seems like it really is just bad paper.
I was referring to the air brushing and such. I should have been more specific. But your argument makes sense. hmm idk then..
TheBiteSizedCrafter She actually mentioned that the air brushed parts weren't that bad and the problem was more apparent on the tiger. But I agree that if it warped from the air brush, it wouldn't be the paper's fault.
TheBiteSizedCrafter In addition to what DeathTheKidFanatic66 stated, I want to add that I can use airbrushing on any "drawing" paper, which would imply dry media, and it dries back into shape without issue. Every other type of paper I've used handles this sort of thing so it isn't unreasonable to expect this one to as well. Most artists expect paper to take mixed media and multiple techniques (like using masking fluid which caused the worst of the warping). I wanted to make sure everyone knew what to expect from their purchase. If this paper was actually intended for dry media only then it should be labeled as such. Any good oil primed canvas will clearly state that it is only for oil paint. I can totally respect and understand why it won't take acrylics. But it is labeled in a way that lets artists know. This is not, so I'm telling people for them :D
Hopefully next time they come out with a color pencil paper they will do so. Otherwise people might not trust them after a while and it is a shame because for the most part they have pretty good products. Though I don't currently have any kind of paper by them I've used their in the past and call me crazy but I hate when my favorite brands end up getting a bad rep from just one bad product.
That being said this paper sounds like it would work for me though since I normally only do 100% dry with my drawings ( a habit from having thin papered sketch books ). Though I have plenty right now and don't need anymore I'll pass until the product comes out better later on ( hopefully ).
I have a question :) when you put the finished drawing up at the end what do you use to take that. Picture may i ask :)
benbuffy rose I use a Nikon D3100 camera. It was one of my best investments for art ever :D
Lachri Fine Art thank youuu
Funny I was looking at Strathmore paper reviews and I see a Lisa who says shes a pro who works with Polychromos and Luminance I was like no way. Then low and behold I see this post lmao.
***** HAHA yep, that was me! I don't normally take the time to write reviews but I wanted to give people a heads up with all the hype around this paper coming out :)
Agreed this paper is woefully subpar!
It's too bad. It would be so nice to have an easy "get this colored pencil paper" answer for those who ask :(
The way you draw is the way draw
You say: it came out ok
I say: that's (expletive) beautiful how can you call a piece like that "ok"
The colored pencil paper is better for marker artist or using alcohol rather than gamsol
Sooo... Not professionals? 😂
oh yeah i forgot to mention that its on sale thats why its so low
*looks at the video* Um. My dad brought me 1 of this book without knowing and then later on Christmas my aunt got me the exact same thing...
Great Work,amazing :-)
Udo Helmts Thanks!
Yeah I bought this paper and regretted it! Never touched it again! whent for Bristol smooth! Out of all strathmore, bristle smooth 400 serious is so far the best paper I've come. Toned is alright mostly for white highlights! If any one knows of better color pencil paper, with no grainy look please comment. Btw can believe she drew that! It's amazing even with the horrible quality of that paper
Do like Tigers alot
Raji Jojo Me too :D
How much do you sell your drawings for?
Search on Lisa's website (galleries) lachri.com
I did, I dont see prices so I came here
too dope.
Fine job but just a little bit more work on the thickness and contrast of neck area.
You are a very talented artist, however, have you thought of a second career as an auctioneer? Your command of speech is incredible.
lachri you should do a crayola challenge. i sometimes think you need expensive materials for artwork. i know that you going to make awesome art with crayola.
Dr.gaming I actually want to, but mostly to talk about why crayola are not real artist supplies lol.
Lachri Fine Art why not make the title "not art uisng crayola"
