One year later 2023 and still helpful. What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF? What are SVG, DXF? Is there a way to see file format info before opening an image in the files app? Not just name?
HEIF is the name of the standard. HEIC is the file extension for files using that standard. SVG is a vector graphics format. DXF are AutoCAD files, I think? Wikipedia is a great resource for looking up things like this. Select a file and use File, Get Info.
I am increasingly using heic files and generally they are the best for the size, but there are occasions where they are not. You did not mention .webp which are also increasingly common. But good coverage. BMP got a miss, the format I loath, but occasionally someone still sends me one from a PC.
After reading this, I think I need a list reference for each application’s filetypes for export, import. Some program shares might send with transparent backgrounds or no file history. I had one app that changed versions and its file format. I guess thats no different than Adobe PDF etc having different versions.
If you just have a few of them and want the best quality, then start with png or tiff. Then after you are done, export to high-quality jpeg. But if you have a lot, it is fine to use high-quality jpeg for the original scan too. Before you do any, test with one at different resolutions and formats to make sure you like it. Remember, it is all size vs quality.
Thanks Gary for your usual excellence in explaining things. Can you explain what the E version of an image file is? I transfer my photos to my Mac with Image Capture and there are always two image files for every photo I take with my iPhone. Whether it's HEIC or JPG, I get 2 files (besides the AAE). For example I get IMG_1234.HEIC and IMG_E1234.HEIC. Or I get the same thing for a JPG: IMG_1235.JPG and IMG_E1235.JPG. The E file is smaller in file size and smaller in perspective (narrower angle). Can I delete the E file to save file space? Or do I need it for something? I don't want to keep track of 2 files for every photo - I have enough trouble organizing my photos already. 😉
Gary, when converting RAW to jpeg on a Mac, for sizing for media use, (not using additional software) is the RAW file gone? do I have to SAVE THE ORIGINAL file elsewhere
So, why some photos in my photo app are saved as .jpeg and others as .heic ? Also, if I drag from photos to FaceBook it will not recognize the image format and will not let me load it.
Rule of thumb: Always use the best quality possible because it's easy to go from better quality to low quality if needed but from low to hi it's impossible. That's why I have always shoot raw (CR2) with my digital cameras and now HEIC with my iPhone.

I go to compose in mail and select format fonts and select blue, but when I open a new message it defaults to black, is it possible to have it default to blue? Thanks again Brian

It checks the disk for various problems. There is no need to do it unless you think there is an issue or a tech support person helping you asks. It doesn't have anything to do with CPU.

PDF documents are like printed pieces of paper, but as digital files. You can put text, shapes, images, etc, on them. So you can make a PDF document with images just like you can make a printed document with images.
Hey Gary, I’ve been trying to figure out why some cut out PNG images have a transparent background when assigned to iOS contact picture while some others have a white background ? It can be checked by turning Dark Mode on.
@@macmost They are transparent since I cut out the background myself in PS. Moreover, in iOS Photo app, the background turns black when I click on the picture to have it « fullscreen » (when I hide Actions panel).
@@Pyxhel Not sure what the difference could be then. Something about how the file is saved has to be triggering a different response from the system. Hard to say what that could be from afar, sorry.

There's no way to set a default text color like that, only the font and size.

If you set your Desktop wallpaper it should remain the same. Not sure why it is not sticking for you.

@@macmost I eventually found out. Here are the settings that works for me : 512 x 512px, 72dpi, PNG with Alpha channel.

Don't forget DNG.
That's one of those RAW formats, the one from Adobe, I think I even mention it, but not by name.
@@macmost Some cameras, I think Leica, use DNG instead of a RAW format.
