Wow! I never thought I'd ever see this great little work of Sullivan's (minus Gilbert) performed 'live' in my lifetime! And what a fun performance it is!
(it brought back memories of singing Thomas' opening 'suicide' aria before three vocal judges in college, who made it clear they were NOT happy I chose it over the Schubert they were expecting. Too bad for them... :) )

Thank you very much, Cesar, for your reaction. Too bad for them indeed! Thanks for sharing the anecdote!

Carboy's aria. Thomas is the other character, the disguised noble.

I enjoy this rendition, quite so! The more accessible Sullivan's work becomes will only benefit. Great voices! Wow!

Oh, so many things to enjoy about this production! Love the small orchestra on stage, the music direction (I like some of the new tempi for certain songs [Especilly 'Fare the well, Letitia'], besides the wonderful work with the music overall), the way the Duke of Islington sings with 2 different voices, depending whether he's in disguise or not, the insertion of Letitia's aria, the Order of the Garter being represented by an actual garter on his Grace's leg, how the mezzo made sure we heard the words "park hack" in her solo song, the zoo animal noises, the choristiers pushing Carboys near the end when he's up on the stump again, and more. I wish more had been done with Eliza's song, which is a particular favorite of mine, and did not agree with the order of the bows, based on the performances we heard.

Good fun! I'd like a Schubert opera another time but with a more atmospheric setting. The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company audio recording even had a sound effect of animals in the zoo!
