I know this interview is old, but I really enjoyed the interview! I've been on Elizabeth Spann Craig's website, reading about writing cozy mysteries. Right now torn between writing a cozy paranormal mystery or a plain old paranormal mystery. Thanks for sharing! :)

Ms. Craig spoke of reading MC Beaton's Hamish MacBeth series. I love those. Always thought of them as "cozy police procedurals". :-)

Is it a good or bad idea to introduce a new character that is going to become a friend of the protagonist and a member of the community every book or every two books? You are basically adding a little more interest and and sort of refreshing the interest in the book The Cozy mystery and the community. Is that a good idea or not?

I personally believe that it could be a fun to do, but it may limit your series due to overcrowding the stories as the series progresses. also, having a lot of characters could get a little confusing for the reader, unless you are able to make each one unique and outstanding from the rest. However, most importantly, I believe that each character should have a clear purpose within the story. It's like the lady said, Cozy mysteries are all about the puzzle...

I'm no expert on Cozy mystery @PatrickO'Neill, but I like the part that Elizabeth said that cozy mysteries are 'all about the puzzle.' So if the puzzle to your characters adds to the story.... it might be a good idea :) Cheering you on as you write your cozy mystery!

Two things really resonated with me and one surprised me.
The last book I completed I wrote in 10 to 45 minute increments before going to my job. A few times every other week or so I would spend an hour or two at Panara or the library, but with kids you don't get that much free time.
Writing within the constrictions of your genre is just how creative endeavors are. Look at any kind of poetry for example.
Where I was surprised is that Elizabeth doesn't write her endings first.

Just discovered your channel. Really enjoyed listening to your interview!
Just received your e-book on self-publishing. You may want to update some of the information regarding Amazon's self-publishing programs.
I haven't totally made up my mind to self-publish, but your outline is certainly a good "road map" to consider.
Thanks for the info! I look forward to seeing more of your RUclips videos.
    Have a good week!
