    00:00:00 The Visit
The Panchen Lama, the highest-ranking Buddhist living in Tibet today, pays an unexpected visit to the local monastery and throws the monks into turmoil. A local hotel owner is worried about the lack of business. In the nearby village of Tangmai, a young farmer's wife is rushed to hospital with complications with her pregnancy.
00:51:07 Three Husbands and a Wedding
It's autumn and everyone is pulling together to get in the harvest, as Dundan worries about hailstones flattening his crops. The local government has installed guns to disperse the clouds and this has put the shaman Tseden, who used to protect the fields with spells, out of a job. Tseden is also helping a local family to arrange their daughter's wedding.
    01:41:51 Faith, Hope, and Charity
The monks begin preparations for New Year, one of Tibet's biggest festivals. Lhakpa, a local rickshaw driver, struggles to earn money as winter approaches. He embarks on a scheme to buy and sell puppies, with disastrous consequences. Hotel owner Jianzang gets involved in a court case which has a surprising outcome. In Tangmai, the doctor cannot cure Lhamo's crippling stomach pains.
    02:33:00 Monks Behaving Badly
In the Pel Kor monastery, the director Choephel discovers that some irreplaceable statues have been stolen and the theft gives the local Communist Party an excuse to put in a government 'work team' to weed out monks they think are behaving badly. Lhakpa heads north in search of a lucrative job on a building site, and Butri gets an unpleasant surprise as she approaches her retirement.
03:23:47 A Tale of Three Monks
Deputy head lama Tsultrim has to juggle running the monastery whilst complying with a myriad of government restrictions. Young monk Tsephun lives and works with his master Dondrup, a curmudgeonly old lama. Tsephun helps his master with the day-to-day jobs of cleaning and tidying; in return, Dondrup teaches Tsephun the sutras and scriptures, an essential part of becoming a monk.

I liked it in general. It gave insight into the lives of people in Tibet; Buddhist traditions. I read a lot about it.
I can't understand how Buddhist monks could behave so outrageously towards dogs??? I was shocked to be honest.
    Is it "normal" over there?

The Dalai Lama, is someone many of us in the west, have heard of, but only really know the name and little else. This documentary made me look further into the subject. Also very interesting about the Panchen Lama and the controversy around the choice of the current one, featured here and the little boy, who hasn't been seen since 1995.

It is clear to me that this film belongs to the genre of semi-fictional documentaries. All in all, it took a huge commitment to finish this film. Thumbs up! Child mortality in Qing dynasty Tibet was very bad, the emperor's in Beijing didn't really interfere much to stop things like serfdom etc the people's Republic on the other hands has done everything in its power to reduce child mortality in Tibet and ensure the population increases, hence why one woman can reliably have 5 kids now, that would have been impossible during the Qing or nationalist eras.

Dogs are treated as pet in West while in most countries other countries they are guard dogs or stray. Isn't it strange that most people in the world fishing as sports or occupation while in Tibet fishing is a cardinal sin that is taking life of living being. Tibetan would never kill an insect or bug as it also has life. So don't try to bring your narrow view of Western culture of dog. Buddhist believe killing any living being no matter how big or small or insignificant it is.

The old Uncle monk is not helping the boy find his spiritual path. Being mean to him, critical all the time, not showing loving affection and not explaining all the scriptures he is forced to read in not fair to the young lad. My heart feels for the poor boy and maybe I am missing something, but this seems like a textbook example of how to push a young person away from the Tibetan spiritual way? IF the old Uncle had truly found the divinity within and felt it deeply in his heart, he would not be mean to the boy monk. Am I correct? In addition, why were they so mean to some of the dogs?
