The Mystery of the Giant Skulls (Zelda Theory)

- Breath of the Wild's first enemy base that you encounter is full of Bokoblins all hunkered down inside of a giant skull. We've seen them over and over countless times around the land of Hyrule; but if they're actually real craniums, don't we need answers as to what they used to be? Could these ancient giants actually have a familiar face?

MaskedNintendoBandit the leviathans are so interesting

If I catch any of my bones exiting my body I’m shovin em right back in. They can’t get away that easy
How does this have no reply
Man I hate it when my bones just suddenly phase out of my body it's so inconvenient and takes so long to put back in my body
What if the Levinthian bones came alive at night like Stalkoblins? I think that would be a cool mini-boss like the Molduga.
This would be SO SICK, I remember the first time that I saw a StallHinox, what a moment!
Overpowered much?
Make it act like a dragon
They definitely wouldn't be MINI bosses, I'd say MAJOR bosses, both in a literal and lore way
Just with more attacks
Don’t you hate it when your bones “Exit” your body.
Right? Lost a femur last week. Was not humours to track back down.
Well, one of my bones appears and disappears, could be a bone or..

@@BlueClefto add a (r) to bone
@@africancouscous "bone or" you need to read it fast
As a paleontologist, I’ve been trained to tell the difference between bone and rock, and those are very clearly rock. To start, the color argument doesn’t hold up. You learn in Geology101 that color is not a good indicator of rock type. Rocks can be any color, as can fossils. I’ve seen fossils that are green, purple, even iridescent. Look up the Lightning Ridge fossils to see some cool iridescent fossils.
Next, weathered bones are porous, so the texture argument doesn’t hold up either. Weathered bones would look more like sponges or wood. When they aren’t weathered, they’re smooth. So the texture that you see in the “skulls” is basically not possible.
As for the unusual placement of some of the skull camps, it could easily have been one of several geologic processes like landslides, earthquakes, etc.
Finally, if those were skulls. where is the rest of the body? Usually, you’d only find this many skulls without the bodies if the skulls were particularly thick, like in a triceratops. Triceratops skulls are much thicker, and as a result much more common than the rest of the body. Outside of instances like that, intact skulls tend to be the rarer element.
Weeeeeeellllllll, bokoblins and the like have bone weaponry... maybe they used the rest of the skeletons to make their weapons?
Good point.
How did I not realize this?
Denzel Means those bones are from much smaller animals. Again, bone is porous, so the fact that bokoblin weapons aren’t so smooth would mean that those are the original bone surfaces, and if that’s the case, then those bones are way too small to come from a skull that large.
Harris : maybe they have a market type thing where they sell the bones to other monsters but save some of the bones for themselves. For example, some of the monsters that made camp in the open have bone weapons but how did they get bones? your point is probably more accurate though
"As a paleontologist, I’ve been trained to tell the difference between bone and rock"
That doesn't mean the game developers have been trained that way. You have to consider their intent, not the accuracy.
The skulls are old dead hylians. Link and all the characters in BOTW are piccori. That would make for an interesting twist huh. Wouldn't make a ton of sense though.
The guardians are ancient toys that got buried in the sandbox.
Randy Routley wouldn’t make sense like a lot of Zelda theories
So, that's why Hyrule is so big in this game

I was under the impression that they were skulls made of Stone crafted to look like a skull, not actual bone skulls
They are
They resemble the exact same skull design atop the lookout towers Bokoblins used on the great sea in Wind waker. It's the icon of the outpost of Ganon's forces.

If it was really Gorons who died during the calamity then they would have been remembered and talked about...unless they died during the first calamity 10,000 years ago
I'll bet the "massive skull" is the head of biggoron from OoT
I think that makes the most sense if they died 10,000 years ago. Because there's this one forest I think in Hyrule Field that's called "Giant's Forest" so they could have faded into legend and people forgot they existed. Plus, going with the age of the bone aspect, the Leviathan's were probably closer to the Skyward Sword era so it'd make sense that they would be yellow because they're even thousands of years older than the giant's skulls. Plus it would take a lot of time for bones that massive to yellow, so that could work too.
I know this isn’t relevant to anything but the giant Gorons could’ve died of air pressure but that wouldn’t explain the giant gorons before botw. Anyway just wanted to put that out.
The first calamity didnt happen 10k years ago. No way would they have time to build so much weaponry in such a short time. It had to be second
Holy Lord, that is impossible as well (lol) as it has weird curling horns, which are not present in any goron.
The "giant dragon skull" in the bottomless swamp actually looks a lot like OOT Ganon's head.
Maybe that dragon skull is the skull of the first calamity ganon
Volagia... not an exact match, probably again just carved out by the enemies
Yes but that is the same ganon as ganondorf and We know ganondorf lived at least until twilight princess
its the dragon from ocorina of time the one at death mountians crater
Gorons eats rocks, so maybe the skull isnt "made" with bones but in stones! its much more resistant, than should fit with their weight lol
Damn, I just wrote a long ass comment making exactly that point (without reading the hundreds of others first, of course). Either way...right?!
I mean it has a look and texture of a rock..
Also its gorons :)

@@xero1048" the sword is bound to the soul of the hero"-zelda
What if a future game shows how Hyrule gets shrunk and this bones are Boklins before the shrinking? Thats why Hyrule is so big in Breath of the wild :P Every living creature just shrunk.
Thajocoth Cook theory, but Hylans look almost exactly like humans, their mouth would not look like that.
I still think they're rocks. Rocks come in all shades of colors. As for your other arguments, who's to say the bokoblins carved out those rocks *exactly* where they are today? Erosion and landslides can easily shatter or move encampments. Also the fact that all the skulls are weathered *exactly* the same way leans it a bit towards the rocks for me, as for the 3 on top of eachother, it makes way more sense for that being a fortress of Bokos rather than 3 giants just sorta laying down in the exact same position on top of eachother and dying...
Or they were trying to escape something and died and fell on eachother
I agree
Okay, but what about the lava stuff?
And then, moving on, the similar texture and all between the behemoth monster skull and the skulls-
It feels more likely that they'd be skulls than rocks.
They are said to be rocks on page 407 of creating a champion
@@hopscotch1049 Here me out, what if gorons have stone bones? I was watching the big goron part and I realized I never even thought of gorons as having bones-since they're made of stone. But then I was thinking, it would make sense that if they did in fact have bones, they would most likely be made of stone. That could explain why it looks like bone AND stone. It's stone bone.
Almost definitely rocks. They're asymmetrical and rather crooked, with a "mouth" shape that only makes sense when it's supposed to function as a doorway. The ones in locations that don't make sense for encampments are all in locations that make sense for them to not have always been there, like on a steep, rocky looking mountainside that looks like it could've had a landslide, or at the bottoms of cliffs, or in the vicinity of an active volcano. The cracked ones in particular are both near cliffs and not upright, almost as if they fell there, plus if we look at the side of these cracks, it's got the same texture as the rest of the skull, where bone has a different appearance on the inside than outside. Also, with the color being different from the other skeletal remains and taking this as meaning they're more recent, this would have to imply that these giants died and left EXCLUSIVELY skulls behind as remains.
Correct. Development notes shared in Creating a Champion also tell us that they're rocks. Specifically, pages 340 and 407, citing them as "large, skull-shaped rocks", and again as defenses made of a "skull-shaped rock".
LoruleanHistorian not a lot of research was put into this video huh, simply googling the differences between fossilised bone and rocks woulda sufficed.
Exactly
They were obviously giant head creatures that rolled around from place to place.
DerpTrooper4000 what was the point of that comment. This video is a hypothesis. When you are passionate about a game you try all you can to find a more complexe answer. You say that he didn’t do a lot of research when he did, but not in the way you see it. He did research about the game’s history. Sorry if not everyone can be an expert in rocks like you.
The large dragon like skull in the bottomless swamp appears to be similar to volvagia’s head from oot (albeit a bit larger), so maybe a descendant of volvagia, who didn’t eat them, was actually fighting along with these gorons, explaining why there was three of them there in that one spot.
Best theory I've heard
I always thought they were just fossilized giant octorocks from the ancient sea...
That actually makes sense.
They're squidlike and don't have endoskeletons.
if octorocks are anything like IRL cephelopods wouldn't the only thing left behind be their beaks since thats the only bone in their body?
Octorocks wouldn’t have any bones...
And in zoras domain sidon did fought a giant octorock on one of the stones said
And if they're Goron skulls, that would explain why they have a rocky texture.
@@Wroserer just going along with the theory, man, no need to be a downer.
*Delicious, Moist Rocks*
If this theory was true it could also help explain some of the "smaller" large ribcage-like structures. And in turn it could help prove this theory, as one of the questions in the back of my mind was "how come we are only finding skulls of these things"
Although I like the theory your “evidence “ of where some of the skulls are, is inconsequential. Landslides, and erosion can account for the odd placement of them being stacked up on each other. The ones in the volcano are harder to explain I suppose it could’ve been inactive when they were built, and fell in more recently.
You know. I just realize their "homes" look like the charms bokoblins sometimes drop when we kill them in skyward sword. They even have a golden skull charm. I don't know. Just reminding that
Ma angeles Sanchez barrera this is the right point. They look very much like the ornamental skull which is the Bokoblin symbol.
@@flanger001 sure. When investigating zelda theories we should check other zelda games to confirm. I don't think those camps are actually made of bones. I think they are only rocks and due to natural survival, they create them and put them wherever they want. Though i think bokoblins in skyward sword were more intelligent. Their camps were separated little houses with a tower in Eldin. They used rocks and knifes to block your attacks. The only think with a skull shape is that ornament they have as they too have it in gold. In lanayru desert, those use to drop the golden ones if I'm not wrong. Also, in that era, not every bokoblin had a camp. They would wander the area of the different regions. The only camps i see are in eldin and they aren't skull shaped. Maybe theses new camps are to resemble those skull ornaments and their tribe. But it's strange to me because bokoblins are like pigs but in skyward sword they look nothing like pigs. They are humanoid and moblins are the bigger ones with spears and shields
This actually makes perfect sense! Because there were giant skulls as you showed in lava at death mountain.
"I'm so good at this game." /sploooooosh
acidicmynd I agree. May Not know that much about anatomy, but it wouldn‘t really fit the gorons face. What bugs me is the bone right above the mouth.. it‘s Not a nose bone so it would be connected to the mouth. Kinda weird though, right?
@@TheDarkSan666 Yes, I thought the same.
in my opinion they were a different race, and were killed in the battle with Ganon 10,000 years ago, or before. Great video! Never something I thought about before.
Maybe botw2 will answer some of the many theories people have been making
They’d never do it but it’d be cool if the leviathans were stal bosses
This is exactly what i was thinking, like if in the next game the leviathans were brought back as quest bosses. It sounds like theyd be a cool boss but very unlikely.
I'm gonna stick with "they're carved from rocks".
Every one has these 3 almost cartoonish looking teeth that don't look any different from the rest of the skull. I don't think the designers wouldn't pay attention to details like this when it came to crafting this world.

I think the monster skull in bottomless bog looks like a large version of Volvagia.
There are a lot of supposed dragon bones around.
You could have also used the giant fish bone water encampments in the comparison.
There is quite substantial evidence that not only giants but other large species once dominated the world. I'm very curious about the timeline of this specific world as geography/geology tells a story of its own.
Very interesting theory. I'm sure you already know this, but one of the oracle games has a big goron in it as well. its where you get the biggoron sword. The placement of these skulls seems especially mysterious.
Maybe the Aesir gods killed these gaints, too. Thor is racist towards gaints afterall. Lol! Jk.

Breach of Demise shows a "Skull"camp that perfectly matches the terrain.
That's definitely carved
This is highly unlikely, but what if they were helmets made of rock for an ancient race of giants (maybe even biggorons)?
Just a thought.
Edit: You also never see the bottom parts of the ''skull" so... maybe?
“What!?! They needed a little shade? Ow!”
That giant dragon skull is definetivly Volvagia
I think the skull in the swamp is a Stallord like in twilight princess
Chet S but shouldn’t it be in the ruins of arbiters grounds if its stallord
@@chets8187 I think it looks more like a gigantic version of the Barbarian Helm from BotW. Same basic structure, anyway.
I legit thought they were just rocks carved to look look like skulls
Definitely skulls from a race wiped out by the Calamity.
Dude!!!! How freaking cool. Something you don't overly think about but when someone puts the thought into it, it ends up being mind blowing.
Then, as you read the comments and realize how many intelligent people (not all of them, to be certain) are spending their time speculating on video game rock skulls and begin to wonder what we could accomplish with a different focus...
...not complaining, I'm here too
Crazy Theory:
We’re actually all minish sized in BotW, and the sculls were dungeon skulls, and the gigantic monster scull is the welcome mat to the Boss Room.
you forget about the skulls in the breach of demise which are very clearly carved from rock
Think about it; with each action, there is an equal and opposite reaction; if a Goron were to punch a boulder hard enough to make it explode, the bones in that arm would have to endure that same amount of force put into that punch once it makes contact with the boulder. Bones similiar in density to stone, or stronger than stone would be absolutely necessary to one-punch that boulder. And Biggoron bones are likely to be at least 20x as strong to put up with it's body.
The giant monster skull looks like the stallord from twilight princess
R.I.P big goron you will be missed ☹💔
Hey, the giant monster skull with the horns actually could be the boss "Stallord" from zelda twilight princess, it could also be maybe a larger descendant of it? Just an idea!
I could have sworn it had been confirmed somewhere at one point that they were just rocks

Bokoblin: Screeches and jumps into lava
These skulls that bokoblins set their camps, actually reminds me of that monster/skull mask from ocarina of time
I can prove this theory wrong the "skulls" ARE carved, the monsters carved them but obviously the rock cant just stay and/or look the same after 100 YEARS.
Like the ones next to the giant curling horned skull seeing that there is a ton of mud and gravel there could have been a land slide.
the ones near the volcano because of the Devine beast freaking out up there, the lava level could have rised up plus land slides.
Though i cant explain why they look different from other rocks they are probably just unique rock
they look like rocks because gorons eat rocks, so it'd make sense that their bones are different, more rich in minerals, so they'd have a different texture, or break in a different way.
@@cosmicstrawberry7579 no they are literal rocks, its proven in the creating a champion book.
I still think it’s just carved out stone, and that the ones in the ones underground were just buried over time and the ones in the lava somehow began to sink in the lava or the lava rose due to the volcano still erupting
The Crenel Hills area (ibetween the Central Hyrule and Eldin areas) also have a number of interesting skull formations, some of which are partially closed up. It's east of the Namika Ozz Shrine, down the hill and closer to the river.
So many theory videos out there and MNB still taking one fresh step further goodness
I think that I may be a previous evolution of the hinox
Like the ones on Alttp cause they werent that big but those were ancestors
I cant be the only one who likes to screw with bokoblins by standing on top of the skull and throwing bombs in
I do this anytime there's an overhang sort of area near an enemy
It's especially fun with Moblins lmao
I always assumed the enemy skill camps were just large carved out boulders because it seems a bit more cartoonish than the other bones in the games, with all the curves relative to the others
I think the big giant ‘dragon’ skull at the bottomless pit could be a reference to stallord
Man, you need to think outside the box. They're not giants. We are SMALL. They are the real Hylians, and BOTW takes place in a Picori version of Hyrule, where the Hylians are extinct, and the Picori are imitating them.
Andres Martinez please think more inside the box in future comments.

FINALLY someone did a video on this! Thank you!
I actually agree with you 100%. I cant think of any other reason. And it fits so perfectly
Hyrule is not prepared for attack on titan
Yes they are the great plateau
I personally think they are rocks, not skulls. They may be a different type of rock that bokoblins and other monsters have been accustomed to using for their encampments and fortresses. See NintendoBlackCrisis' theory on these lol. Also, as for the three on top on one another, they could've been a bokoblin fortress with the giant skull at the bottomless swamp and a mudslide from the swamp or a landslide or earthquake could've moved them. Also, for the ones in lava, lava dwelling lizalfos could have built it and volcanic activity or another geological act could have moved their camps into the lava lakes, shattering one of their encampments. The only thing that really makes these rocks stand out is the fact that this type of rock is seen only in the skulls, not the mountains or hills. Although, the monsters could have designated this type to be the ones they make camps out of it (or Ganon decided that) and the monsters decided to make all of them into camps, or Ganon sent the monsters to make sure ALL of that special rock is made into camps, with none remaining.
A very similar colored rock is also in three other places: Skull Lake, the Breach of Demise, and the Horse God's spring.
Love the editing. Kudos!
Love the theories you do. The exploration to show often time missed areas of BOTW is awesome. Whether the theories are right or not is beside the point of great research & putting together complex theories that sound good & fun to speculate on. Thanks.
I like how you edited Biggoron into having a beat face to indicate a girl version. 😂😂
Seems farfetched, but very entertaining video nonetheless
It could still be a carved rock made by bokoblin, as in skyward , the bokoblins drop a similar looking skull, or could be a bokoblin ascestor.
Evolution in Hyrule has been really weird.
Dragons > Lizalfos > Elemental Lizards
They were the Zonai. They were hidden in front of us the whole time...
josda1000 read creating a champion. Specifically what the developers say about their purpose.... because they have no purpose other than a dev tool to explain a sense of ancient and ruin. Their name means mystery. They are left a mystery so the devs didn’t have to spend time explaining them and trying to tie them into the game.
The... The Bokoblin camp skulls are confirmed to be made of stone though. We even see some made of different types of stone, don't we? They're even referenced as stone in the files of the game if I remember right. Other theorists have done videos on the dragon/leviathan/etc fossils and even said "Yeah no the Bokoblin ones are just stone."
I mean hell, even the texture is distinctly not bone. It's rock.
In addition, now that I'm going through the whole video... The images you took clearly have different lighting. Notice the clothes being worn. They're also lighter in the second image, along with the skull. They appear light grey in the first, and white in the second. In the video you show of you running around on one, it's actually _darker_ than the wall you're climbing on in the clip beside it.
As for the buried trio of skulls, the area they're sitting on is elevated, and the soil seems uneven. It's entirely likely that they simply built too fast in a poor area to build (the bottomless bog and its surrounding areas probably aren't very stable) and there was a landslide of sorts. This also explains building multiple, since they would need to if their previous skulls because inaccessible.
Death Mountain is literally stated to have erupted heavily and ruined mining operations in recent years. It would make sense that this has raised the lava level, especially since those skulls are nearby the mine that was abandoned. It was probably abandoned because the lava being that high meant the Gorons could no longer access the mines. I mean Link himself needs to paraglide around just to avoid being burnt.
Finally I'd like to point out the shape of these skulls. Notice first how they're uneven, misshapen, as if shoddily put together. Fits the craftsmanship of Bokoblins, doesn't it? Then, look at the entrances. That's not a Biggoron's mouth. It's three large, rounded pieces jutting outwards. They clearly don't belong to any living race, and seemingly have no possible way to possess teeth. We'd probably see at least a few if they did. These are shaped by Bokoblins as bases to intimidate their opponents, that's why they're skulls. Bokoblins have loved skulls since Skyward Sword, where their skull necklaces, likely crafted and not obtained from tiny mini-corpses, are collectable items.
The stalchildren in ocarina of Time could become huge and maybe it is their skulls
Thank you for covering this. I have been asking forever, and just keep getting "They're rocks." About time someone looked into it.
"their texture is similar to rocks because they're old and worn down"
"their color is different from other bones because they're young and fresh"
Make up your mind, you clickbaiting fool
@@Wroserer maybe goron bones are rocks. you ever thought about that
Great video! I was really curious about the bones and skull
One of the best Zelda theories I’ve ever seen thanks for this
the skulls kinda resemble the Ornamental Skull item from Skyward Sword, which are dropped by Bokoblins in that game
I just always thought they were some sort of statue and the rest of their body was underground. And some sort of landslide just covered the rest.
Bruh imagining a flashback where giant Bigorons are
marching out to war would be cool as heck.
I looooove the sound effects, it was sooo great :D
Death Mountain didn't have as much lava until rudania reactivated it.
MaskedNintendoBandit: makes this video
Age of calamity: im about to ruin this mans whole career
Probably the one in the swamp that looks like a bird and I love your vids they help me a lot with the history of the game
The camps remind me of the ornamental skull collectibles that rarely drop from bokoblins in skyward sword
In that game they are "macabre fashion" and not actual skulls, simply carvings
So it's clear bokoblins have known of these skulls since the beginning of the timeline, as such could they be the skulls of an extinct species of Demise's minions
MaskedNintendoBantit you have the most interesting and creative theories I love watching them how do you decide what to talk about
I always thought they were rock carved heads resembling skulls to scare intruders. They seem similar to stalkoblin heads. And why they are located in weird places such as lava? Well landslides happen and volcanic region is not stable at all.
This is a great video, but I'm of the belief that these are indeed carved rock and not actual skulls, and here's why:
- It's very possible that landslides are responsible for the small group of cluttered ones
- The ones in lava are in an area that possibly once wasn't covered in lava
- Several kinds of people/species have potential to have been the ones to carve out these rocks over those 10,000+ years
- There are other giant bones that "could" belong to the skulls, but none resemble the color/texture of them
- The "mouth hole" is kinda coincidentally a perfect door (whether or not the lower jaw fully closed it with either bone or flesh doesn't matter regarding this)
- We haven't seen the entirety of any of these skulls, the lower jaw is either underground or doesn't exist for every single one
Hope you read all that, thanks lol
Fun fact: Bones don’t actually start off white, but turn white one all other organic substances are removed. Fresh bones are flesh-coloured.
Honestly I think these are some of the shiekah people. In the dlc we see that the shiekah possibly have 2 forms a large and a human sized one.Maybe some chose to die as giants.
The "skull " with horns kind of reminds me of Death Sword mini boss from Twilight Princess
I have said this in so many comment sections (don't make this into a theory in case it is what he developers are going to do because if it was popular they would have to change it) the bottemless swamp skull is surrounded by malice, you know THE STUFF THAT IS KNOWN FOR REVIVING SKULLS OF THE 3 MAIN ENEMYS!
Biggoron was my guess also, glad someone put the time into thinking it out
I wasn't sure at first but then the Bigggoron thing had me sold on this idea😎
Landslides happen, and death mountain didn’t erupt until after the calamity, so bokos could’ve made them in that time.
This is the first video I've watched of yours (thought it was a NintendoBlackCrisis video) but I very much enjoyed it! Think I'll be watching a few more.
I don't remember where but I recently heard that it's a confirmed fact that these are stone carvings not sure if it's in one of the zelda books. Anyhow this is a pretty cool theory
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! You finally did my theory!! YOU'RE THE MAN, MNB!! Since posting the theory on various channels, someone mentioned the Making of a Champion book supposedly labels the camp skulls as carved from rock, but when you an entire giant skeleton inside a place straight-out called Goron-bi (*cough* Bigoron) Lake, it's kind of obvious what they are intended to be.
I was SO READY to mention Big Goron (as well as his brother and terminian counterpart) i was halfway through the vid before this.
I like this because I always questioned what happened to the giant races of Zelda like the big Gorons

This theory explains why there were so many soaking in lava.
