Just watched this one and really enjoyed it! I agree that Pryce and Hopkins are the reason it's so good. I'm not Catholic either so the whole "electing a new Pope" process was super interesting to me.
I grew up Catholic and even went to Catholic school. That being said I didn't know much about the details of this event, just that it happened and we watched it on tv in school. That's Benedict's time. I was older when Francis became pope. I enjoyed this film because it showed me what went on behind the scenes. I knew the process but I knew nothing about the popes themselves, I only knew them by name. It was interesting to see their lives before and after becoming pope. Also, the discussion between the two is definitely something the church was dealing with at the time. Numbers were dropping fast because they were not adopting change, Francis saw this and so did other clergy members throughout the world. I think it covered that discussion well enough.
To use pro wrestling parlance, Francis is the babyface and Benedict is the heel. But as we are beginning to see in modern times with the new age atheists gaining ascendancy you have people like Jonathan Pageau, Jordan Peterson and Bishop Barron kickstarting a revival to more Benedictian thinking. After the Second Vatican Council, Catholicism was dumbed down to be more populist but that was the exact wrong thing to do as people are coming to realize. But as life mirrors art or art mirrors life, as we find at the end of the movie, if we go back to our wrestling jargon, Benedict "changes face" and becomes a babyface. We come to understand and love Benedict. And 3 out of 5 couches is ridiculous, compelling acting and script 5/5 both leads were brilliant especially Hopkins who gets the less "glamorous" role.
@@MoviesAndMunchies I did watch the movie. The acting is compelling and relatable. If you are latin or german, if you are catholic or lover of history then this movie will hands down be a 4.5 couches. The cinematography, including the exposure, was spot on to me. I cried a few times, especially during the flashbacks--mind you I am an atheist, but extremely interested in religion from an anthropological standpoint and how enriches or creates conflict in the human experience.
I felt the movie was presenting an age old argument. Sticking with traditions or modernise, and regardless of the subject this usually results in a fascinating discussion. Now, throw two magnificent actors to carry the conversation and you have a good, if not great, movie. I can easily see this movie adapted to a play. I even dare to say the play would have more susbtance and will be more enjoyable.
Right now, I am watching The Bonfire of Destiny on Netflix. If you see it, I am curious what you think. It is French so if you don't speak French, you have to choose between subtitles and dubbing. I have tried both. Listening in French with the real actors voices and reading subtitles is definitely better in my opinion.
I just found that on Netflix! I didn't know about it before this morning. I totally agree on subtitles...I never do dub! I've got a bunch this week to watch too, so Bonfire may have to wait a bit, but the trailer looked interesting!
Good review! I haven't seen The Two Pope's yet but it is in my Netflix list. Do you feel like they explained why Benedict retired? In real life, when this was happening, I felt like the explanations given were vague and probably not the true reasons.
I have seen this film it is a great character study of the relationship and moments in there lives. I think you should watch the film as too much explanation would be a spoiler. It is a master class in acting very well done. Happy New Year.
Pope Benedict is considered to be "more conservative" by US standards, while Pope Francis is very left-leaning. This would explain why the movie favors Pope Francis and why the left in America like him so much, while hating Catholicism at the same time.
I was hoping this would be something like a period piece taking place in the Renaissance. I was "born" into a Catholic family, but don't really practice any kind of religion. My favorite pope would have to be pope John Paul II, only because he's famous. I think the most intriguing would have to be Pope Constantine because he converted the Roman empire to Christianity. It would be nice to learn about the history behind how he did that.

Its fiction
Good, honest full of arguments review. Loved it.
I watched this a couple of times and I liked that they both were seeking after truth and had the humility and rigour that involves
Great review

When you mentioned Dan Brown I knew you were the one. I slammed the subscribe button.
Hahaha! Thanks! Did you watch the movie? What did you think of it?

@@DJRod91 Right on! Hopkins and Pryce were so good - loved watching them interact!

Oh my goodness, a play of this, so heavily reliant on dialog, would be magnificent! I'd totally love to see that!
I thought this started as a play? Here: "adapted from McCarten's 2017 play The Pope." from wikipedia
@Daffodil Underhill yeah you’re correct it was based on a play. I loved the movie myself.

John Paul II - exemplifies what a true pope should be like. My favorite so far.
Good review!

Constantine was an Emperor not a Pope
