@@julieeales Terry had lots of offers from groupies in the Specials' heyday, but he turned them down out of loyalty to his fiancée. If they were very persistent and didn't have transport home, he would let them sleep in his hotel bed while he slept on the sofa! I saw the Specials play at Newport in South Wales in 2013. Terry was then in his 50s but there were still 20-year-old girls in the audience shouting their "praises" at him lol

You have to admire Terry for just showing up for this show, Mallet was the most annoying thing on TV back then.

@MrCorfuz Bipolar & manic depression are the exact same thing.Yes, he has it. Think he already had probl. w depression a long time ago,not sure. Can't say I've seen the progression in interviews throug the years. He's always been like that:sullen, deadpan, etc, but polite. Maybe u saw smth I didnt see though. I agree w u: he's a genius! I adore him!
What pisses me off is people who blame him for having ''broken up'' the Specials or for Jerry not being in the reunion. Just proves they know shit!

Autistic not depressed. Or maybe both. Lack of eye contact, social awkwardness, word finding difficulty - it's screamingly obvious to me (I am also autistic).
It makes me so sad to think he's probably died not knowing as it helps us understand why we are the way we are. Autistic people are often misdiagnosed as depressed, bipolar or schizophrenic in some cases

@fw6521 He wasn't autistic, I think you may be projecting your own experience on to Terry.
He had (at this point) undiagnosed and untreated bipolar and schizophrenia, two pretty serious mental illnesses that impacted his behaviour in ways you are attributing wrongly to autism. He spoke about how much his life improved once he was diagnosed and began treatment. People who are misdiagnosed do not respond so positively to the hardcore medication Terry had to take, thry would have had no impact at all. But the improvement for Terry in later years was startlingly obvious.
His bipolar was triggered by very serious and complex childhood trauma (aged 12 he was abducted and gang raped by a paedophile ring lead by his school teacher)

I'm not a mental health specialist and nor am I autistic. However in other interviews Terry Hall discussed his experiences with depression and bipolar disorder, including symptoms that I don't think really overlap with autism (like paranoid delusions), and sadly he had a very traumatic childhood which would put him at greater risk of bipolar disorder. Of course it's possible he was misdiagnosed or not fully diagnosed. But nobody can know for sure now that he's gone.

@arianrhodhyde7482 He was diagnosed with Bipolar and Schizophrenia and said his life improved greatly when he was finally properly diagnosed. If he was misdiagnosed, the medication would have had no effect on him so I think we can say he was given a correct diagnosis.
As you say the extreme traumas he suffered in childhood and his being genetically susceptible (his mum was in Terrys words severely mentally ill) most likely caused his illness.

@@sunny70299 yeah that's a good point as bipolar disorder i think tends to run in families
