    Just a quick note for everyone to thank John for taking the time (offline from this video) to help sort out my signal chain using the Orion 32+'s effects. For those that want to use the FPGA effects as outboard hardware (*not* as channel inserts) in a hybrid mix setup, it's SUPER easy. Just route your TB/USB play to AFX IN....assign effects in the control panel....and then route your AFX OUTs for that signal to the appropriate LINE OUTs. Done. Of course, this setup would be for when you don't plan on returning the signal "alone" to the channel strip in your DAW. In this case, you'd be summing the channels/busses outboard and returning an overall stereo mix for printing...much like printing to tape.
    That's it - no latency and no fuss...just like hardware in its use and application (apart from the "virtual cables" you're routing within the CP).

      Thanks for suggesting this, since I am using the ZenTour with a pc and there is currently no AFX2DAW connectivity with a Windows PC. (Grumble..)
      Come on Antelope! You've left your PC using customers out in the cold with a half capable interface.
      We paid for the whole thing! We should be compensated for this!.

    Affect is usually a verb meaning "to produce an effect upon," as in "the weather affected his mood." Effect is usually a noun meaning "a change that results when something is done or happens," as in "computers have had a huge effect on our lives." There are exceptions, but if you think of affect as a verb and effect as a noun, you’ll be right most of the time.
    My trick for remembering which is which, is Action in Affect helps me remember this is the verb spelling.

    John - my question is about how to use/route the effects in the case of mixing to hardware (not recording). Quite a few folks (myself included) mix outboard - that is, we send tracks/stems/busses out of our DAWs into outboard gear, sum it, and return a stereo mix for printing (much like working with tape). What I can't understand is how to apply effects in the Antelope box (I've got the gen. 3 32+) to a signal on the way out. This is the "soundbyte" that Antelope seems to use (i.e. apply these effects at the hardware level). That's great - but all I can seem to get are instructions on how to record with the effects (mainly as nice-to-have's for monitor mixes). That's not much help for the primary way engineers actually "use" plugins...mainly during the mixing stage.

      Hey Jay,
      This is totally possible! Hit me up on FB/Instagram and I'll explain it further...
      TB play/USB play > AFX in > AFX OUT > Line out (for external effects) go through your signal chain and back in through the Line in. or ADAT or whatever. I know it's a masssssssive headfuck haha but that routing matrix is genius.

    • @JohnBrownemonuments
      @JohnBrownemonuments  5 лет назад +1

      With TB play/USB play you assign your individual tracks to these (say Kick in 1) send that to AFX in 1 > AFX out 1 > Line out 1 to then send that to external effects > Line in 1 > into your DAW with the full chain.

    • @jayburkette8977
      @jayburkette8977 5 лет назад

      @@JohnBrownemonuments Hey John, so in my case then, assume backup vocals are sent to a buss (in my DAW) and assigned to USB play 9/10. I would (on the control panel) route usb play 9/10 > afx in 9/10 > afx out 9/10 > line out 9/10, right? That would get the signal to my outboard gear, passing through the effects buss within the 32+, correct? Note that once outboard, all of mix is summed in analog and returned via "line in 15/16" (I assign 15/16 to the monitor slots so I can use the absolutely stellar converters/dynamic range for the purpose of driving the monitor controller).
      While this sounds straightforward, I thought these had to be setup as hardware'ish inserts in the DAW track controls? I'm glad to hear that this might not be necessary, as latency issues are then taken care of fairly easily.
      Thanks for the help - I'll try this later this evening to see how it plays out....

    • @JohnBrownemonuments
      @JohnBrownemonuments  5 лет назад

      Jay Burkette yes you would then have to set this up as a hardware insert in the daw, which would be out 9/10 and return 15/16.
      In Cubase latency is automatically worked out but not sure how this would work in pro tools.

    • @jayburkette8977
      @jayburkette8977 5 лет назад

      @@JohnBrownemonuments Huh....now I just got lost again. I'm not understanding the "return 15/16". The individual track (in this case, the backup vox buss) in the DAW should *never see that signal return in a hybrid mixing setup. The only thing coming back into the DAW is a "hardware return" track setup to receive 15/16 as a full stereo mix post hardware/summing. The backup vox buss just sends the signal "away" into "hardware land" - never to return as a unique signal.

    Hi John, very interesting video.
    If I may ask you:
    I think I understand, from what you said in this video, that there is a problem with superior drummer's monitoring. More or less how many ms can you go down? Is it possible to play?
    And how many control panel routing scenes can be stored?

    Also what would use there digital 33-64 I|O for?
    If there is only 32 analog I|O then what would you be using the extra for??
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @JohnBrownemonuments

      there are 32 analogue in, but you could also record other channels through to the 64, such as a DI guitar, but also have one with the AFX turned on, or like a Snare Drum Channel that also has an AFX channel but with a distressor slamming it or something!
      Can also use the Madi for more connectivity, or ADAT, SPDIF etc, possibilities are endless...

    Hey man, how are you?
    I’ve a studio in Brazil and I’m looking for an interface that gives me 32 I/O. My first option was Presonus Quantum 4848, but I noticed it was discontinued and there’re some people with problems without answers in the company website…
    Then I discovered Orion 32 + Gen 3, did some research and noticed some people complaining about the company support…
    Im in Brazil and it’s very expensive to send an unit to be replaced, and it takes time either. So it’s much better if it’s a reliable equipment…
    Did you ever hear about problems with Orions 32?
    Now a days I have two VRS 8, but some of their outs are completely failed and they don’t work well together. I really need a solution here! Kkkk
    My system should be: 32 inputs into the interface, then 32 outs into my analog console (Soundcraft GB8). Do you think Orion is a good choice?
