Does it come with a kick pedal? I see Nick moving his foot along with the bass drum sounds.
@@NURREDIN No, you have to add a kick trigger.
@@NURREDIN sold separately? but you can plug multiple? pedals in
I'd play it with my 505 looper! (Although it seems that there is a Loop Sequencer option within the SPDSX Pro also?)
@@VJFranzK There’s a step sequencer, but it’s not a looper like the Alesis Strike Multipad has.
Yes, I still have my Roland Octapad II, have it since 1988 and it's still strong, don't have any sounds like this one but it's an excellent drum controller.
Well I pulled the trigger and ordered it today. This was very helpful to give me a head start while I wait for it to arrive!
nick you truly are the king of reviews your dedication to detail is incredible..
That's very inspiring. And a great video too! Thanks for sharing 🤘
Loving the variety of sounds
I had An Octapad II in the late 1980s. In fact I bought it without having a clue what it did just because it looked so cool. Got it home and realised it had no in-built sounds, so hooked it up to my friend's Kawai K1... my first encounter with MIDI.
I have a full TD drumkit now, with loads of extra pads but I quite fancy one of these SPDs and a couple of foot switches to play "minimalist" locales. Think it'd be quite cool and for once, I wouldn't need an 18-wheeler to take all my kit with me.
Great demo! Just ordered one.
Having a unit of f this kind to accompany a guitarist or keyboardist for small, low volume gigs will be great. I love playing acoustic kits, but volume and size constraints can require these tools if we are going to gig.
Hey, Sweetwater! Y'all should do a video series of meeting your gear advisor. Maybe let them give a little of their background and why they love their job, helping people get what they need.
I still use my SPD-S. Midi is a beautiful thing!
Absolutely amazing !!!
Like it or not not. All of Nick's equipment demo's for Sweetwater are super helpful.
I would like to see a head to head with the Alexis version.
I can't wait to get rid of my strike multipad.
He’s the best at what he does! 👍👏👏👏👍
It’s very close. But the software editor alone makes the Pro worth it. Some things the Pro can do the Alesis can’t and vice versa. Just depends on your needs.
@@KeithHomel I agree the software for the spd sx pro is a heaven send. Makes editing on the fly so seamless.
The Alesis hardware is Not as robust or sturdy as Roland.
Good stuff! Love your product videos one of the greats there at Sweetwater!
The setlist feature and displaying the pad names in front of you make this worth the upgrade.
Please do a video demonstrating use as a small standalone kit with external triggers (kick, high-hat, etc..)
BTW, how many hits can the glass display take from a stick?
Great demo. I'm saving up to buy one of these babies, for live, but also studio work (to give a live feeling to some of my tracks…). 👍
This is insane 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
👉 FIRST AND FOREMOST… after a seemingly endless search and countless videos later, this is the first video that actually puts the unit into perspective for us cinematic composers. As the proud owner of a world-class DAW station, and a dream collection of vintage keyboards, one of which goes all the way back to 1864, I never thought I really needed any more gear. I even have the original OCTAPAD 8, from 1987, which is still awesome to this very day. This is the only video I’ve ever found that shows how this Octa 30 can be very useful for us cinematic music composers. Yes, I know this was originally designed for drummers in mind, but this is also a wonderful tool for the production of cinematic compositions for film.
The fact that we can import wav files through a USB port via a thumb drive is a big home run. And we can see the control panel on our DAW screen. I will purchase another monitor screen just for the SPD-SX Pro.
The 16 step sequencing feature is also a huge plus for film composers.
Thank you. I will contact my sales engineer right away.
What kind of stand is being used in the video?
Oh man, my band is just starting to use backing tracks... this could help us so much...
The SPDSX-PRO will be the industry standard for Pro Drummers , excellent upgrade from my SPD-SX especially the light bars , colour screen and the memory capacity. I got my Pro in December and I can honestly say it’s the business and is easier to work with than any of the other competitors and I’ve tried them all.
Have you figured out how to transfer everything from the spdsx to the pro?
@fartpooboxohyeah8611add your own sounds then
Nick is the GOAT!
Sounds great like all of Roland products
Great Demo!!!
That intro 👏👏👏👏 bravo
Merci pour ton retour d'utilisation.
Thanks for sharing your expérience with it
Thanks for this tutorial!
Thanks for watching, Haze! 💙
I’m still a fan of the handsonic. I hope they come out with a new version of that too.
wow! i'm gonna be a drummer for this...
Meanwhile buskers everywhere be like “How much?!? Ok, ima buy it”
How to use "Tempo Sync ". !!!!?
I really enjoy your demos. Please share what you used as your mount and stand. I didn't see it on the product page. Thank you.

Pad sequence actually outputs midi so you can use it to sequence a set of sounds in Ableton.
Does each step in the sequence send a different MIDI note?
@@isaac_pearl yes. Whatever is programmed to the pad you’ve sequenced.
The SPDSX Pro does not do everything the SPDS does... Where is tempo sync?
We have a full Roland kit and a Yamaha DTX 12 in the studio. These devices are great as MIDI controllers/input devices but the acoustic sounds are terrible. The multi-velocity multi-samples in Superior just blow them out of the water. I've used the DTX 12 and a couple of pedals for small live gigs on occasion simply for convenience, but otherwise those sounds don't get used on any recordings.
A set of these pads along with EZ Latin Cuban Percussion will give you a great way to add percussion tracks to your recordings that not to far away from the real thing. Much much cheaper than purchasing a decent selection of real percussion instruments and also much more practical if you have limited studio space.
I think it more efficient when you use this as a loop player with a regular acoustic drum even the tm 6 pro module have more v drum feature like double hit detection , modeling drum with sample and complex velocity layers, for me this thing is more like an MPC that you can hit with drum stick.
Roland has always been at the cutting edge of music and sound technology
It's basically an Alesis strike multipad clone. So, technologically it's almost the same. But there's a notable difference: Quality.
@@pauliusmscichauskas558 My strike multipad is unusable after 2 years of use. Screen freezes when booting up and shutting down. No tech support or help from Alesis, even though it's a pretty common issue after looking online. Pretty frustrating for a supposedly high-end product. Will take SPD-SX any day over the strike multipad. Never buying again from Alesis.
Nice demo.what kind of mounting hardware did you use for the pad.
Hey Nick.. great video. Thanks. I'm an amateur player. I wanna buy a drumpad, do you recommend Spx pro or octapad 30?
I'm wondering how the control panel takes full on shots, I think I would need the controls seprate from the playing surface.
I see the parts with the hi hat connection/function, but nothing mentioned about the KT 9 kick pedal. Ive not been able to hook mine up and Ive been
thru all the buttons that dont work and missing the one that does. Why is this so complicated? The manual does NOT mention the KT 9 connect either.
5:13 this Industrial kit is cool.
Is this device pressure sensitive so that the player can vary the dynamics of the sound or does it simply play the sound at the same volume level every time? I used to play percussion in High school many years ago and I’m just looking for something to play on for fun.
Hello, Oxibase! The SPD-SX Pro is velocity sensitive. Much like a real drum, the volume it outputs will be dependent on how hard it is struck. That said, you also have complete control over the velocity settings. Should you wish to have the SPD-SX Pro output at a fixed volume level regardless of how hard it is struck, that is possible.
Thanks for the interest!

I do prefer the old stand alone editor compared to roland’s new one, and Yamaha’s DTXM12 sound, midi, and storage expansion option through the iOS app.
That being said. The Pro is a killer device in general (and that is why I use it now too).
I would like to hear your opinion on the DTXM12 vs the SPD-SX Pro. I don't think I need all the functionality of the SPD-SX Pro and I like the sounds of the DTXM12 and the more pads to play with, but I believe the DTXM12 is about 13 years old now and I wonder if Yamaha may have something coming down the line.
hell yea
What stand is used to hold it in the video?
Hey Nick, what headset mic are you using in this video?
I wish this demo had gotten into the computer DAW connection thing. I'm trying to get my SPD-SX Pro to play the samples assigned to the pads of the Impact XT virtual instrument in a PreSonus Studio One Show page. Not having much luck.
can you do a video useing the spdsx pro with roland td 50 how to connect ,and can you record it all threw the td 50
How did you map the kick to the pad ?
Hello. I have a Important and frustrating question I hope you can help me.
The 'Roland pad spd sx pro'
I would like that 'from the output' only the click sounds in my headphones. but in a way everything comes out and I just want the click in my headphones not all the sounds.
How do i do it? What do I have to do for it to work?
thank you so much
can i connect a hi hat like vh-11 for example to the spd sx pro (trigger)? and is it possible then to play open and closed ?
Thanks so much for your interest. Yes, you can.
The SPDSX Pro does have a Hi Hat trigger input.
I hope this helps.

plz i want to know if this one have sounds at the library like old drum machines like linndrum or tr707
Are the analog samples velocity multi sampled? So velocity makes the hit react like a real snare etc?
Hello, Anders! The SPD-SX Pro is limited to one sample per pad, not multiple samples dictated by the velocity. Of course, the pads are velocity sensitive, but they will not play different samples depending on velocity levels.
Thanks for the interest!
Cody Kraus, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1766, cody_kraus@sweetwater.com
@@sweetwater this is literally not true, each pad has two voices with a selection of blending modes that are velocity responsive
ngl this pad addresses all of the shortcomings of the yamaha DTX. making me wanna trade it in for one of these now 😂
How many external pads can be added ? Can this replace an old TD-10 brain on a Roland TD-10 Concert kit ?
Hello, IslandDigital! The SPD-SX Pro can support eight total zones of trigger inputs. That could very well be enough zones to support an entire e-drum kit worth of pads and cymbals, but keep in mind that most electronic cymbals occupy multiple zones for bell and bow. Realistically, the SPX-SX Pro might be a little limited if using it in this way. I recommend looking into the Roland TM6 for this, which can support 12 total zones.
Thanks for the interest!

If you mess up a kit really bad because you changed a bunch of things, pitches, different snares, volumes and other parameters and you just want to get back to where you started before you messed it up is there a way without a factory reset?
When you tweak a pad, or preset kit and want to go back will it save automatically the way you last left it. If I turn the machine off it stays where I last had it and any changes by default?
Really sucks when I forget how it was but I messed it up or just don't remember all the previous parameters before I messed it up.
Can you recommend it in combo with dawless stuff like a Novation Circuit Tracks an so on? I think this could work really well for a techno performance..
Hey, MIXtof Music. Thanks so much for your interest. Yes, that would definitely work with the internal sounds.
Hope this helps.

@@sweetwater Hi Jason, thx so much that sounds great. Wish you a great weekend! 😎👍
Hi, could you plug this into an electronic kit via midi and play the kits on the SPD on your electronic kit?
Hey there! If you plug the SPDSX into your electronic kit via MIDI, then yes, you’ll be able to control the sounds on the SPDSX via your electronic kit. Same goes for the other way around - if you run the MIDI output from your SPDSX into the electronic kit, then you’ll have the ability to control sound from the electronic kit with your SPDSX!
I hope this helps.

I need to stop my Click from coming out from my speakers and just headphone only. Here is my setup. SPD OUT- IN TO Roland TD50 K Because we gotta hear playback and I don't have Mixer. So when The SPD sound comes thru my Roland TD50K The Click comes with it. My headphones are plugged into Roland TD50 To hear both sound source, And that causes everything to go in front of the house speakers. What's the work around?
An iron panel required for protection of the underpads part
yep, this machine is really cool, however, I use the TM6 pro for playing with backing tracks and I thouhg the spdsx pro included that function. it´s necessary to import, asign those samples in 2 pads and make the pad link. Unfortunately it´s a risk for many factors. For the rest, is one of the most convenient investment that I´d made
Can anyone here answer if the stock file sounds on the Roland is free from scrutiny if used in tracks?
Some of mine are guitar hip hop loop themes and as demonstrated here, tons of other sounds. If I produced something out with these
stock sounds, will Roland come after me? !
I have one question: what you are using for mount you spdsx? This is not simple cymbal stand with clamp

Time stamp 9:40 made me think of Danny Carry of TOOL.
@sweetwater, what headset mic is he using?
Soundset from yamaha psr640 home keyboard. Great
It won’t do sample chop to different pads, no trigger banks which would be useful and tap tempo a kit and it overwrites the tempo programmed unlike the previous model which is annoying for live playing.
Losing the other 3 master fx buttons is annoying. It would have been fun to have 4 programmable buttons. No panning delay apart from 2 tap and 3 tap, no tempo matching for the loops(though I found that clunky anyway but others like it). Otherwise it’s a big step up in lots of audio routing and realism with velocity switching between layers. Extra trigger inputs are excellent. I love mine but miss certain things they left out.
Buy a sampler and shut up.
Do you know of anything like this that does what you’re saying? I’ve been looking…
@@mojoxide yes. The original spdSx
@@cristaples holy smokes - then what is Roland thinking? Those decisions must have saved them money? Not sure about others, but tap tempo loop syncing is a prized feature. I’m staring think it makes more sense to just get pad controllers to run with software that provides the features I want.
It really seems like Roland is nerfing this to save money somehow, like Apple does with their MacBooks - I.e they dare not add a touchscreen so they don’t eat into their iPad sales.
I say this because in addition to the lost features, sorry, the included kits sound like cheap crap from the 90’s - stuff you’d expect from a 299.99 beginners Simmons kit when they first resurfaced in the early 2000’s. Hell I have a Roland TD-06 that sounds on par, If not better.
I mean don’t get me wrong, I know you don’t want to eat into your drum module sales, but then why include so many?
This really is the Roland way. I never upgraded from the SPD-S because of a bunch of missing features, like the ability to switch between A/B sounds using a footswitch and the suddenly inconsistent shoulder pad sensitivity.
We have oriental kits inside or I have to install?

Hi
I am from the Bahamas, I am a solo instrumentalist, and I am interested in this Roland SPDx
Roland spd sx pro The tempo of any loop cannot be increased or decreased only the tempo of the click sound is changed. So please kindly show me the solution to this problem asap.
There is no solution except to buy an Octopad which is a midi sequencer. This is a one shot wav player. Make your loops and adjust them in a DAW then play them at the tempo you created.
@@KeithHomel
this is a sampler pad, the function of tempo is a normal function, it must be there and it is necessary, so will nothing be updated?
@@bhavikdasadiya It’s a sampler pad, not a midi sequencer. It doesn’t have a looper, and it doesn’t have a tempo sync or quantize function. If you want to adjust loop tempos, you’ll need to buy an Octopad, a Yamaha Multi12, or an SPD-SX.
This is a sampling pad so it should have a tempo, if you remember the old SPD Sx also had a tempo function. Where was the midi sequencer? This is the pro version, it must have the tempo function. And the tempo function is a common thing and a must have in the pro version.
@@bhavikdasadiya It does not. It was removed. Roland has said that tempo alteration should be done in a DAW.

Was wondering the same thing. Found it down in the comments 👍🏼
You don't even need a drummer with this. Just a looper and your set.
why wouldn't they add a Looper like Alesis Multi Strike has, that's a deal breaker for me
It's too bad you can't change the tempo of the loops. I hope roland releases an update for this issue.
Does it have a LEFTY mode ?
The pre-loaded samples never sound great on these. Im glad it has full customization capacity because othersize 90% of the acoustic drum samples on my SX are useless.
I don't get it.. where are the basslines and backing vocals coming from?
From the machine.
upload a looped sample to the pad to use as a backing track
I want to be able to tap tempo a loop. Is that possible?
