Great no bullshit information, no torque wrenches, no presses, no resistance scales. Just plain old experience, feel & no how. You gave me the confidence to use my normal tools & get the job done, thanks alot!!
This was the best video on how to replace/repair the swivel hub components. Thanks to you, I felt confident to do it myself and succeeded replacing the CV joint and bearings on my 78. Thanks Heaps.
Hey mate, brilliant video, I reckon I have enough confidence to do my own 75 now, save me frigging 100's on labour. Your the kinda bloke I could have a beer with, cheers mate!
This is an excellent video, and my go to instruction for working on my ute's front wheels. I think the under-appreciated bit of equipment in this video is the car hoist. What a joy it would be to be able to do this work standing up, with parts easily accessed instead of lying in the dirt unable to get into position to access bolts. I think this goes part way to explaining why an hour long video instruction takes me the better part of a day to complete at home.
Abraham Pitman it took two days to film. I’ve come a long way from working on my own driveway in the dirt where there was a shed not far away but the roof was so low you couldn’t lift the bonnet. It’s taken me 20 years to achieve this. Keep on keeping on mate and work hard and you can do anything.
Car hoist is the "secret weapon", I was working under my car changing the oil or something like that and a hammer fell off the bonnet latch support area in the middle of the grille area and hit me fair square in the "Jatz crackers", I then promptly head butted the front cross member and vowed that that was the end, no more groveling around on a wheelie board in the dirt, I got me a hoist............. one of the best tools I ever bought for the shed. Great video mate, excellent, very informative no rubbish. I liked the donning of the safety glasses at the appropriate time, perfect, you've got my vote
the circlip in the free wheeling housing is a PITA to re-install. be careful it doesnt spring off and go "boing" into the shed or garden somewhere. a conventional external clip with two holes for normal circlip piers would make it so much easier. the 54mm socket is also 2-1/4" exactly
I fitted the wheel bearing race for a MK2 Hilux by using an old starter motor with the solenoid removed. I think the race was some thing like 83mm diameter and the starter was a mill or 2 under. The starter body was soft steel so didn't damage the race, and by hitting the shaft of the starter it drove it in dead straight.
Did you share more of your secrets in a latter video of how to replace the bearings not just the repack?.. if so please share the link. Thanks,, !! Great video and l love your style
Awesome vid mate. Watched a dew of your vids and im spewing u dont make them anymore. Doing this tomorrow wish me luck. Do u put ur lockers in to stop when the cv slides into the diff for dropping
I use a couple of old studs, or bolts with the heads cut off, to temporally hold the spindle gasket, spindle, backing plate etc in place until I got a couple of bolts in.
Great video, your cameraman was pretty average but thanks heaps for taking the time. I’ll finish putting mine back together tomorrow knowing that my front end is done properly, you’re a bloody legend mate.
Hi your video was great but I had a major fail the ball bearings fell out and bits of metal everywhere. My axil was OK do I replace the pice that fits into the cv joint or will it be OK
In ref to the position of the spindle gaskets: I have a FJ 60 series workshop manual which clearly shows a gasket between the swivel housing and the spindle. Makes perfect sense. But it also shows the other gasket positioned between the dust cover and the dust seal plate...not as you have done with the gasket between the outer face of spindle and dust cover. Other mechanics have done it your way as well and this is the way that I have also done it...but it puzzled me why the need for this gasket at all ! ...hence why I looked in the 60 series manual. (Note: that the difference between these series of LCrusiers are negligible. Any comments?
I'm doing this tomorrow. The dirt and grease is caked on hard as hell like cement on the outer hub housing (worse than the VDJ in ya vid). Did you use a wire wheel to remove the bulk first?
Thx for the video - I have to do same job on my 80 series Land cruiser. I assume it'll be pretty similar. One question I have - do I have to engage (factory fitted) front axle diff lock in order to prevent parts from dislocating inside the diff when I pull out the drive shaft? I was told to do so if I pull out the rear axle drive shaft... Could you please comment on this? Cheers, Frank
@@franks2354 ye not sure i did my rear last week and where the axel goes into the diff dropped but ended up using a broom stick to lift it back up. Thats what putting the lockers in help stops

Been looking at buying my first 4x4, kind of narrowing it down and then I watched this clip. You can fix this thing with a (small) sledge hammer, now I kinda understand why Toyota's get such respect. I can see a troopy on the horizon. Bit more research to go though.
