    I used bubble wrap from Costco and it really works almost as well as fiberglass insulation but better because it doesn't get soaked with rain or sleet. fiberglass when wet will keep moisture in the hive which is a killer. Bubble wrap won't absorb rain and dries very quickly.

    • @beek
      @beek  Год назад

      I thought that too, but I've used fiberglass for years without any moisture issues.

    I wrap my hives with a commercial landscaping cloth. It’s black so it does draw heat and it is water resistant so it doesn’t soak up like a sponge but offers good wind block. So far so good.
    Plan on trying queen rearing in ‘23

    Like you I am in Northern Illinois. I bought a hive sleeve since I have just one hive. They are spoiled. I also learned about your candy boards through your videos. I have a woodshop so made my own boards and placed one on about 4 weeks ago. So far they are staying in the bottom deep and not moving up. My first year and working hard to get them through winter. On the queen rearing, you almost have me convinced to give it a try. Hope you and the family have a Merry Christmas. Stay warm and healthy.

    Merry Christmas from Henry County TN. I placed my moisture quilt, checked sugar pattie and wrapped my hive. Used an old truck sized window sun reflector. Bees clustered low in hive. One deep and 2 mediums. Praying my bees will survive this storm. Thanks for your video.

    Dave, thanks for the tips. We have lows here in the south (North Carolina) of ZERO with 40 MPH winds! We received our Winter-Bee-Kind boards (thank you) and placed them on the hives. We also wrapped them with insulation, well vented on top, and heavy stone to weight the hive boxes down. We are hunkering down and praying for daylight and normal temps soon! Best, Merry Christmas, Kevin Rowland. PS Love the sweater & see you at Hive Life! Appreciate all you and the team do for us!

Winds off Skyline Drive here in the foothills of Virginia were fierce. Got it done! Tonight wind chills down to -10. Bees saved.

    Hi David, beekeeper from coastal Newfoundland here. The wind blows here all the time, often at extreme speeds. I designed makeshift wind guards for the upper entrances that allow light to enter as well as bee passage and air flow. How can I post/upload a picture of it? All your winterizing tips are standard here as well.

    Why are you not using an entrance reducer on the single medium hive? They look like they are doing good. I have lost 2 out of 27 hives already. They had small bee numbers. Both replaced the queen late August. I believe they just didn't build up enough after that.

    How cold does it have to be to start wrapping? it's in the 20s here at night now, which is really cold for me :) but it will climb to the 30s maybe 40s in the day. Will that end up being too hot with the wrap? Thanks
